Microsoft Testing New Version of Hotmail

Advertisement (Why?)
Microsoft is rumored to be testing a new version Hotmail, codenamed "Kahuna". The new version will reportedly feature a new style of interface, routine inbox refreshing and a preview pane, enabling users to read and respond to e-mail without navigating away from their inbox.

According to sources close to Hotmail developers, the new interface – codenamed “Wave 11” - is still lacking in features. However, sources say Microsoft is aiming for a “cleaner, minimalist” look with the new version. Not much has been said concerning new feature implementations, although integration with MSN Spaces and Messenger is said to be forthcoming.

Recognizing that it is behind in quite a few key areas, Microsoft have engineered the next wave of Hotmail, allegedly referred to as the "competitive wave," in a systematic push to meet or exceed the competition.

Microsoft would not comment directly on Kahuna, but a spokesperson explained that, "The MSN Hotmail team is constantly exploring and internally testing new features as part of our ongoing investments in the service. Some initiatives will appear in future products and services, while others won't make it past the whiteboard."

I've always prefered Hotmail over other web-based email providers. An update is in order Anyone know where I can find some screenshots?

Go Hotmail!

I'm happy with my gmail, the few text ads in it do not bother me and I get a nice clean javascript interface to use. (This includes the nice AJAX functions gmail uses). I also get a large and growing amount of space to use.
#2.1 Porp on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:24
Good for you!

The world seem's to be happy with their Hotmail too, since it still manages to be the worlds #1 e-mail provider.
#2.2 CarbonEyes on 11 Jul 2005 - 22:40
lol yeh number in terms of quantity of users.
Read any reviews, Yahoo Mail comes first in terms of quality and Gmail is close behind
#2.3 kitchenutensils on 12 Jul 2005 - 19:05
there going to make a yahoo/gmail clone reminiscent of MSN Music... (just a guess)

I'd love it to be like this:

#4.1 mx3 on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:10
that'd be awesome
#4.2 tiagosilva29 on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:53
I like it, it's very clean. I'd like to see two versions: a black version and an white version. The black version wouldn't hurt my eyes so much (it's a command-line thing from the past).
#4.3 Ilya on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:53
by the way, could you please share that msn messenger skin of your. it looks cool
#4.4 Wiser87 on 12 Jul 2005 - 01:32
I second that request.
#4.5 krono6 on 12 Jul 2005 - 01:53
It's the MSN Wave 11 Skin..... Google it
#5 Hanz™ on 11 Jul 2005 - 19:54
This is good - the interface is far too clunky right now.
(1 reply) #6 OceanMotion on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:01
Good news. Needs an overall. I like their thinking. “cleaner, minimalist”

#9 Zerbs on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:49
ugh... I signed up for a hotmail account like a year and a half ago to use as a secondary e-mail to use when ordering online and such to keep junk mail out of my real inbox, and before I even had a chance to use it I was already getting junk mail!
#10 Thorpe on 11 Jul 2005 - 20:56
I really hope they do update Hotmail. I would like it to be like Gmail because currently you have to load every page up rather than just one section. Also, in Hotmail I can get errors every now and then and because I am using quite a bit of storage the folders do not show the number of message near them when viewing Inbox or other folders.

Of course. It's The Microsoft Way:
1)See a product that is inovative and popular.
2)Make a Rip-off of it.
3)Shovel a ton of useless crap into it.
4)Change the UI so it looks different enough from the product it's based on.
5)Call it "New" and "Exciting". Announce a release date for it.
6)Delay the launch by 3/4 of the time that it took do do the preceeding steps.
7)Release the product, even though it isn't actualy ready and is full of undocumented holes.
Ignore anyone who points out flaws in the software.
9)Attempt to silence the inevitable critics by whatever means nessary. (no killing the media people, we may need them to speculate about our various products).
10) Randomly choose a flaw, and patch it. Repeat this step at your discression. Do NOT patch all the flaws.

All Hail Bill Gates.

#11.1 - STFU. Geez. I just have to laugh at the amount of s*** #9 and 10 are.

#11.2 - what? From wikipedia,

QUOTE

Historically, the first webmail service was Hotmail, created in 1995 by Sabeer Bhatia of India. Hotmail became very popular, and was later bought by Microsoft and re-branded MSN Hotmail.

Say whatever you like, but Hotmail was first. (Of course, Hotmail as in the non MSN branded version.)

(BTW: if you were being sarcastic, sorry. )
#11.4 virtorio on 12 Jul 2005 - 01:09
Yes I was being sarcastic, in fact if I remember right I had my hotmal account before Microsoft became involved with Hotmail.

Good for them. An interface makeover is much needed.

They should however make their service more compatible with other browsers than IE. With alternative browsers there's always the few things that screw up.
#12.1 SquareSoft0 on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:10
I don't understand, my hotmail works just fine in Opera and Firefox.
#12.2 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:12
Rich Text editor doesn't work in Opera or Firefox.

EDIT: WTF? I just tried it in Opera, and clicked Compose. I get this:

#12.3 SquareSoft0 on 12 Jul 2005 - 04:51

This is what I get in Opera.
#12.4 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 05:31
Well this doesn't bother me. I use IE for Hotmail anyway. (Plus, MSN Messenger launches Hotmail in IE regardless of what your default browser is.)
#12.5 SquareSoft0 on 12 Jul 2005 - 06:37
I wouldn't know, mine defaults to the MSN browser. I would use it regularly, but I just don't feel like logging in each time, and I want to use Trillian for MSN messenger.
#12.6 Kushan on 12 Jul 2005 - 10:01
If you have Messenger plus (and if you don't, I highly reccomend getting it, it makes MSN much better) you can get a plugin called "StuffplugNG", a google search will locate it. It has a lot of nice features, one of which is to open all MSN links in your default browser. This includes the email button, myspace, anything really.
(8 replies) #13 nw_raptor on 11 Jul 2005 - 21:38
Well, Hotmail needs some work. A minimalistic look would be more than welcome.

Some notes:
I never understood why Greek looks funny whith Firefox + Hotmail. IE + Hotmail is OK, Firefox + GMail is OK, but Firefox + Hotmail = no Greek. (And yes, encoding is set to Greek)

Nothing to do with the interface, but maybe give people outside the US some space to breathe. With my space limited to 2MB I was forced to automatically delete anything which Hotmail saw as spam.
#13.1 TheSarge on 11 Jul 2005 - 21:50
M$ has been known to deliberately make certain of it's web pages incompatible with browsers other than IE.
Of course, it could just be that someone at MSN used a Frontpage Extension and narfed your greek pages unintentionaly.
Firefox does not support Frontpage Extensions becasue they would have had to have licenced the code from M$... well, that and Frontpage Extensions are generaly considered to suck and/or blow, an the Firfox/Thunderbird development people don't like Frontpage as a matter of principle.

Hotmail blows, M$ knows.
#13.2 Porp on 11 Jul 2005 - 22:09
M$? Great way to make a point.
#13.3 EduardValencia on 11 Jul 2005 - 22:30
Moderators should ban anyone who uses "M$" it makes me feel i'm part of a community wich has a bunch of retards like this guy
#13.4 rm20010 on 11 Jul 2005 - 23:56
To quote someone's signature (forgot who it was, sorry)

"Using M$ instead of MS doesn't make you look cool. It makes you look like a moron."

TheSarge would have made some good points if he would quit being a f***ing troll and using $ instead of S.

#13.3 - no I think anyone that trolls should be restricted from commenting for a few days. (Then they'd resume trolling. Blech.)
#13.5 TheSarge on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:56
Oh, sure: Call me a troll for using "M$" instead of "MS"
The truth is, by calling me names instead of contributing to the discussion, all three of you are acting like the "trolls" you disparage.

Excuse me for attempting to remind you that Microsoft overcharges for it's software. I'm sorry, was the Dollar Sign ($) not subtle enough for you?
It's too bad that you don't like it when my chosen form of nominclaure isn't conforming with how you think it should be. Perhaps when you have something worth considering I might actualy give a damm what you think. Until then, stop the personal attacks.
Porp: If you're going to criticise someone for how they made their point, it might help to use some more actual words. Using a pletora of emoticons doesn't help.
EduardValencia wrote: "...bunch of retards like this guy..." Guess what, smart guy? You just violated the "Zero Tolerance" policy of this board. Who's the retard now?
rm20010: How, exactly, is it that I'm a "troll" in your book but what you wrote doesn't make you a "troll"? Your argument seems to be based largely on my use of "M$" which you seem to equate with name-calling... but then you turn around and engage in a round of name-calling yourself. Any respect I had for your words ended when you did that.
#13.6 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 05:40
^ Please point out where I name called. If it was in the quote, sorry, but I wasn't the one that made it up. I quoted it.

Let's see how your comment would have been in a NON trolling matter:

QUOTE

MS has been known to deliberately make certain of it's web pages incompatible with browsers other than IE. Of course, it could just be that someone at MSN used a Frontpage Extension. Firefox does not support Frontpage Extensions because they would have had to have licensed the code from MS... well, that and Frontpage Extensions are, in my opinion, pretty bad, and the Firefox/Thunderbird development people don't like Frontpage as it generates non standard compliant code.

People will disagree with your opinion. But at least I can read it without seeing words like 'M$', 'suck', 'blow'... and so on.

There, I quoted you calling me a troll. That's name-calling.
You don't see me going around calling you a nerd or a geek, do you? Then how is it that it's OK in your mind to call me a troll?
I suppose I could tone down my language. I will if you will.
(don't make me come back here and point out where you used the "f" word or I just might have to hit you)
#13.8 y0sh on 13 Jul 2005 - 12:51
Hahaha you suckas got served by TheSarge!

Seriously though, I'm no fan of those who use "M$" because it is incorrect - and I'm a perfectionist. However, you three were wrong for lashing out. What kind of example are you setting?

So will it have 2GB of space for free?
#14.1 Porp on 11 Jul 2005 - 22:09
Pretty sure, since I already have 2GB in my Hotmail.
#14.2 rm20010 on 11 Jul 2005 - 23:58
Technically I also get 2GB. That's only because my ISP decided to migrate its mail servers to Hotmail's.
#14.3 SquareSoft0 on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:12
What's funny is that my paid MSN account has 250 megs, but I only use it as a spam-box anyway.
(I didn't pay for it, just sharing on someone else's account.)

They should change the name while they are at it, maybe something more professional like MSN Mail. The name Hotmail makes it sound like a porn service.

There already is MSN Mail, I have an '@msn.com' address.
#17.3 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:17
Rewind to 1996-1997. It was spelled 'HoTMaiL.'

Notice the capitals - HTML. It represented what Hotmail was about - web based email.
#17.4 Ravensworth on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:58
Interesting, I never knew that. Then again I'd wager very few people do. I always wondered how they came up with the silly name though, and I still think it sounds naughty. I used to delete it off my bookmarks after installing Windows years ago so others wouldn't get the wrong idea.

Bah they're just afraid in fornt of Yahoo Mail announcement of their new plateform based on Oddpost and due for this summer.
Isn't it funny they announced more or less the same features? They just dont want their users to switch to either Yahoo Mail or Gmail which may release a public beta after the Y! Mail enter its own...
And once again trying so hard to catch up, and once again far behind.
Hotmail is already uber slow...this automatic refresh will certainly lead to crashes and freezes...I bet my two balls on that...such a weak plateform, and you'll be waiting 10 good seconds before the preview pane actually display your message...
Absolutly nothing but a vague announcement...pitiful
#18.1 C-Fu on 11 Jul 2005 - 23:30
whats pitiful imo is that you spent all that time just typing that crap up
#18.2 CarbonEyes on 11 Jul 2005 - 23:44
I just love your arguments.
Now tell me what's new in this "New Hotmail generation"...basically nothing compared to the competitors.
But dont you tell me you're surpirse, Hotmail is a Microsoft product anyway so...apart from Ballmer there is no one that will call this plateform innovative.
Now tell me what did you learn in this announcement in coparaison with last year?? had you been a news reader you'd know about all this for a LONG time...

Now can you tell me the true purpose of this piece of news...? no you can't because there are only motivated by fear
#18.3 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:05
Piece of news: Microsoft is revamping Hotmail.

Other fact: there wasn't anywhere in the article that mentioned 'innovation'. Just cleaning up their product to serve their users better.

Bull**** about crashes and freezes. Never got them while using Hotmail.

I like using Hotmail as is. Let's just keep using these email services as they are, ok?
#18.4 Trade Wind on 12 Jul 2005 - 00:05
CarbonEyes: This wasn't an "announcement"...there were no official MSN sources in there at all. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here.

rac·ism P Pronunciation Key (rszm)
n.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Next time some US company offers a contest that's available to US residents only I'll just call the company racist.

I don't know about that policy but I have 250 MB in my inbox for quite a long time. And I'm not living in America.

Huh? Poster #19.1 called it racist because of definition #2 (discrimination) in your quote.
What are you talking about contests for?
#19.4 Napalm Frog on 12 Jul 2005 - 02:05
That's cause including some nations over others is not racist. If they were, just for a hypothetical example, refused to let all Native Americans have the same service as the rest of the world, THAT is racism. Note, there are many of these "ism" type words: racism, sexism, nationalism, heck, even speciesism.

Anyways, I hope they go for something similar to Gmail, but not fully. As much as I like a minimalistic look, in my humble opinion, there is such thing as too clean. That third=party vision above is a good example.

Allow pop3 access again, thats all I want from hotmail!! I'm trying to fully move away from it and over to Yahoo which is a shame as I used to think hotmail was perfect, never wanted the huge storage space, sigh.
#23.1 rseiler on 12 Jul 2005 - 07:07
Again? You must have a very good memory. Did they offer it at some point last century? Hopefully you're not referring to Outlook/OE's WebDAV access (now only available in legacy and paid accounts), since that's not POP3 and is inferior to it.

Of the big mail providers, Gmail is the only one that offers POP3 that I know of. I think Yahoo does too, though not for the U.S.
#23.2 rm20010 on 12 Jul 2005 - 08:27
Yes. In this century, back in 2002 (but not 2003, I think) it WAS possible to use Hotmail to check up to 3 other POP accounts you may have (most likely ISP email accounts). That feature is now only available to pay subscribers.
