G5 iBooks are hard to design, I hear

That is the reason why they are switching to Intel.

The reason Apple made the G5 Powermac enclosure out of metals is because the sheer heat of the G5 chip would have melted the plastic enclosure down. If it does that with that much space around the chip, there is no way they can put such a hot chip into a case which is just a few centimetres thick. This was probably the biggest incentive to move to Intel; P4 is cooler than G5 and faster than G4

#3.1 Zenith on 27 Jul 2005 - 07:14
i wouldn't have said worthless, but it was a disapointment to see a disapointing processor upgrade. and what happened to 64MB VRAM?!?

Personal I find the new Mac Mini's more exciting with more standard memory. It may not seem like much but for me it's even more of a temptation and even more of a reason for people who buoght Minis a few months ago to be pissed.

I recently got iBook

Contact Apple - they might replace your current iBook with one of these new models, or at least give you a discount on a new model; it depends how recently you got it.

A while ago my friend got an iMac G5 and three days later the current models came out - he called Apple and after paying $99 (for postage I think) he got one of the new models. Pretty good deal IMO.

Wow thats amazing.
#9 Tungsten T on 26 Jul 2005 - 22:38
Still only a 9200, I think I pass

The new mini doesn't include wireless unless you get the 1.42Ghz model. It's misleading. The wireless is optional "Build to order" on the 1.25Ghz just like it always has been.

So much for widescreen ibook

Now that every single Apple laptop has built in Bluetooth 2.0, and the majority of their desktops do too, I think we will finally start seeing Bluetooth implemented in most Windows PCs (specificly laptops). Just like Apple was the first to adopt firewire as standard I'm pretty sure the same will happen with Bluetooth. It pisses the hell out of me when I see a beautiful sony FS series laptop in a store, but the lack of built-in Bluetooth is the deal breaker. I hate dongles, I hate trackpads and I hate wires and Bluetooth is almost as cheap to implement as Firewire ($6 part), it needs to become standard in PC laptops. But now that Apple has it standard across the prtable line and even things like the PS3 have it, I'm sure that now Bluetooth is starting to take off and by 2010 (Bluetooth 3.0 or whatever is out then) will be in almost every PC computer sold.

P.S. It really helps that Windows finally has native Bluetooth support as of Service Pack 2

there was more of an incentive back in the day for windows pc's to start having firewire as standard; digitcal camcorders - which is still practically the only real use of firewire unless external hard disks (and then most people use usb2). Where's the killer app for bluetooth?

Who would be stupid enough to buy one of these knowing Apple is to switch all their gear to Intel based architectures.

Sorry, but come on. Let's get real here.

#13.1 Zoue on 27 Jul 2005 - 02:44
How about the very large consumer base that has no idea or could care less what that means.
#13.2 Zenith on 27 Jul 2005 - 07:00
Apple won't be switching to Intel until this time next year. they still have many upgrades to come with PPC.

Talk about overpriced.
#14.1 dhan on 27 Jul 2005 - 05:23
iBooks are in fact cheapest laptops you can get now (if you don't bother to compare performance )
#14.2 shao on 27 Jul 2005 - 08:03
you're having a laugh, right? cheap. don't think so.
#14.3 Ambivalancer on 27 Jul 2005 - 11:22
Might as well just buy a second hand laptop, It's not like it makes a difference...
#15 Ashl on 27 Jul 2005 - 19:26
Anyone willing to test the freefall function to see if the hard drive survives?
#16 - diego - on 27 Jul 2005 - 22:39
who's gonna buy this stuff... ?
