The TweakVista website has released it's tweak for Beta 1, allowing testers to use unsupported cards.

TweakVista™ is the worlds first tweaking utility written specifically for the upcoming Microsoft Windows Vista™ operating system

The first version of Window Vista works well with the latest Vista builds as well as with some of the older Longhorn builds. For legal reasons, only a few tweaks can be released at this time. Once news of more features of Windows Vista are released to the public, we will be able to include more tweaks.

NOTE: This build was designed for the WinHec build of Longhorn. The Windows Vista beta 1 build should be out shortly.

Yes, they've linked both to the same picture. If you change the "http://www.tweakvista.com/TweakVistaSoftware/TweakVistaScreenshot1.gif" to "http://www.tweakvista.com/TweakVistaSoftware/TweakVistaScreenshot2.gif" you get the right screenshot

edit: typos

I have installed Windows Vista Beta 1 from MSDN (build 5112) and TweakVista reports:
QUOTE
"To run this application, you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework:
v2.0.41013
v2.0.40607
v1.1.4322
v1.0.3705"

They could have checked it before releasing it Vista Beta 1 runs .NET Framework v2.0.5 if I am not mistaken.

Edit: typo

Rename the .config file and you'll be able to use it to trash your system. It causes an error and disables DWM on startup.

Well, it was released before Vista Beta 1, so that's not entirely surprising. Things change.

As PeterF mentioned, the current version is not compatibile with Beta 1. The .NET version is a fortunate safety-net for that.

What suprises me is that the screenshots are taken in XP & not Vista?!

wth is DVM?
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by LANCEL0T on 28 Jul 2005 - 13:19
I think it should be DWM - Desktop Window Manager. "The Longhorn Desktop Window Manager (DWM) uses Avalon and WGF 1.0 and is responsible for cool effects, such as layering transparent windows, "tilting" windows into the screen, and so on."

The DWM doesn't use Avalon.

Though it uses some of the same techniques (since both draw to the screen through DirectX).

So a Geforce 6800 or Radeon X800 with 128 MB will not run it, while a 6200 with 256 MB RAM will? Even if you have 1 GB of system RAM?

the X800 PCI-Express version is supported with an LDDM driver in Beta 1, the AGP version is not

woah! I only have a GForce 4 128 meg of ram but 1 Gig of system ram will that work for me? Or would I need a new video card?

If you wish to make this program run on Beta 1, well, go to http://www.jamesproud.com/tweakvistafix/ and download the fixed config file. Replace the one installed by default by the program and it shall work
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by Hurmoth on 28 Jul 2005 - 16:01
That helped me in getting the program to open, but it still doesn't start DWM for me though
Quote this comment #9.2 Posted by rm20010 on 28 Jul 2005 - 19:23
Running TweakVista and starting DWM causes this dialog to appear:

"Run DLL as an App has stopped responding (something like that)

Windows is finding a solution.."

MAKE SURE you are running LDDM drivers and not updated XP drivers (which will work but kill glass)
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by Hurmoth on 28 Jul 2005 - 20:24
Unfortunately the only card that has LDDM drivers are the ATI Radeon 9800 series cards, right?

What a joke a tweak program for an Operating System your testing for Microsoft.

They are not interested in faults that happen from your tweaks, they want the OS tested!!!

NOTE: This build was designed for the WinHec build of Longhorn. The Windows Vista beta 1 build should be out shortly.

If this the case, how is the app called tweakVISTA because VISTA name was only realized last week. If this is for the winhec build, vista wasn't named then. pretty weird.
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by greenreaper on 28 Jul 2005 - 19:03
TweakVista was released last week, too - last Saturday, in fact. At that time, the new name was known, but Beta 1 was not available. Therefore it was named TweakVista.
