The open-source Firefox browser may be the new kid in town, but Microsoft Latest News about Microsoft is out to show that the sheriff is back with a vengeance, according to some analysts. New figures from Web monitoring firm Net Applications reveal that Microsoft regained some ground from alternate browsers -- including Firefox -- last month.

In July, 87.2 percent of Web site visitors used Microsoft's Internet Explorer, up from 86.56 percent the month before. Firefox, IE's closest rival, saw its share decline from a record high 8.71 percent in June to 8.07 percent this month.

Bad copy+pasting.
#2 PaulK_CMF on 16 Aug 2005 - 22:02
Think someone copied and pasted straight from a page with an advert inserted midway into the article.
#3 StuRReaL on 16 Aug 2005 - 22:11
I suspect its people testing IE7

This is the kind of stupid editing mistake I would expect from Slashdot.

That's the kind of cheap shot I would expect from a troll.

It's most likely to do with IE7 beta testers. The article even makes mention of this. As far as the mucked up sentence in Deren's post goes, it is in fact part of an ad inserted into the article. Pretty sloppy stuff. This so-called "news" shouldn't have even been posted IMHO, even without the ad text screw-up.

Why? You'd want to know if Firefox gained on IE again, wouldn't you? Troll.
#8.1 samriley on 17 Aug 2005 - 00:21
its not gained any ground though its an annomoly due to the release of the beta version. or is more than likly due to that. for something to "gain ground" it needs to consecutivly gain ground, not just a one off.

And what do you call the measly 8% garnered by Firefox. It's just a one off fad.

measly 8%

Me thinks ANY company would be overjoyed to have an 8% share of such a large market. Plus that number is debatable... some measurements are lower and some are very much higher.

Just wait until the web gets branded versions of the Fx/Gecko browser from the likes of Amazon, Google, Apple, Dell, Earthlink, AOL, etc. I'm sure marketing depts are drooling over the possibility of grabbing a piece of the browser pie (even only a measly 8%). Wait... that might not be a good thing.

I have had to remove the worst of the scum Wintools from two peoples systems this week. It was a royal pain and I told them they better use Firefox from now on. I upgraded them to SP2 as well and downloaded MS Antispyware but I still don't trust them to not screw the computers again if they don't use Firefox.

I agree, itll be guys who use firefox n downloaded the leaked beta to see how good it is. expect this to be reversed again. Im i IE7, but it pales to FF any day of the week!

reason why?

Because there pissing website is crap in firefox and any other browser they could have easly coded there site for IE and all the others!

Think that when IE7 goes gold, FF will be on VERSION 3!
#13.1 Magallanes on 18 Aug 2005 - 03:51
When ie7 goes rc, FF will be on version 3 BUUUUT you must use the nighty building 3.03 for run a decent version, and it's can be downloaded in a hideous ftp into the mozilla webpage... and any plugins will work only in version 2... and almost any people will use the version 1 cause autoupdate don't work really good in ff

This isn't news. The numbers are so close from last month to this month that it probably falls within a margin of error.
#15 MadDog on 17 Aug 2005 - 20:36
I don't think it has much (if anything) to do with the IE7 beta. Not enough people using it to make that kind of dent in non-MS browser share. Firefox got a lot of press a few months back and everyone (including myself) decided to try it out since it was new and cool and had a nicer icon than IE.

Now people are realizing that IE works with more pages than Firefox, especially in a corporate enviornment (try a Lotus Notes based intranet). Now please hold off on the flaming about how pages that are perfectly coded will display fine in Firefox, that's not the point here. The point is alternative browsers, in the mainstream, are a bit of a fad. I use both just because I still have Firefox installed.

Lost marketshare by less than 1%? Wow that's amazing.

I'm sure their bloody margin of error on their stats are higher than 1%.

Hope Microsoft continues with its commitment to open standards despite seemingly clawing back share.
