- I won't continue to listen if Joshua Mattick (sp?) continues to have a voice on the show. His voice is irratating to listen to... he does not have a radio/broadcasting voice.
Otherwise the show was interesting. -

- I apologize if my sound quality and voice were not the greatest at the time. We just didn't have much else to work with.

- Maybe for some videocast, who knows?
I wish to be an alternative format, like AAC. -

- What's wrong with .tv? What, you were epecting 'poweruser.audio'?
-

- Ahem, quoted directly from the top of poweruser.tv's webpage.

- Dear Neowin,
If you going to call a podcast YOUR OFFICAL PODCAST, have it YOUR OWN not from other intrests.
After listening to it for 5 minutes I also have to add to the others comments that its a very poor job done and not up to Neowin standard. It's hard to listen to especially in the JoWood part.

- Dear Marduk,
If it was there own what would there be to talk about?
And you don't seem to grasp that it is free, you can't expect every free thing to be top doller entertainment.
-
#8.2 Posted by Frogboy on 20 Aug 2005 - 03:18
- You know Marduk, sometimes I think you live to troll news items to news item.
On the one hand, you complain that the podcasts has "other interests" and then you complain about the segment that was purely about Neowin news.
Audio is tough as you add people from all over the place. It can be done well but it will take time. Even This week in Tech has audio issues even now. Go listen to their earliest episodes and it was the same. Not all the Neowin mods live in state of the art sound studios.

- I'm not going to drop any other podcasts names because I don't want to be accused of advertising, which is indeed against the rules. BUT there are alot of podcasts which despite identical technical obstacles always end up being the same high quality podcasts. Its called editing, you play with the software and make the audio sound good, don't you pinpoint me about this a few weeks ago a few people also mentioned this, AND IF YOU LOOK IN THE OTHER POSTS YOU'LL FIND ITS ALSO MENTIONED.
-
#8.4 Posted by Frogboy on 20 Aug 2005 - 04:12
- Editing can't solve the audio problems in that episode. Only better audio equipment.
I've listened to plenty of podcasts too including This week in tech and they have their issues too, especially in their earlier episodes.
If you think it's so bad, Marduk, please, by all means, don't listen.

- HAHA if you think audio software does the trick for everything then you are very, very wrong indeed.
-
#8.6 Posted by Echelon Left on 21 Aug 2005 - 00:44
- Dear Marduck: If you think you can do better, then do it and stop with the small annoying noises.
-
#8.7 Posted by Marduk on 21 Aug 2005 - 01:33
- Edit:Why bother.
GREAT PODCASTS!

- lol, reading that was really funny. marduk, you make valid critiques of a clearly unfinished process and everyone either misunderstands, misreads or misrepresents the facts that are posed. Don't let them get to you just because they can't read.
-
#8.9 Posted by Mascrin on 21 Aug 2005 - 15:39
- People understand that it's a work in progress. Marduk's comments go beyond criticism into being assanine. I'm a podcast addict and this one is at the very top of the list of good quality. Marduk is either just trying to be nasty or he's clueless about audio if he thinks editing would have fixed what were clearly bad originating audio cons.

- I do admit I love the topics they choose, and what is said is usually informative. It's just that the voice quality needs a bit of improving. The host does a decent job, though she sits on the sidelines a lot of the time.
-
#9.1 Posted by xpgeek on 19 Aug 2005 - 23:06
- Listening to it. The audio quality does still need alot of work. The female host's voice is always so much lower then everyone elses for starters. Just the volume of their voices, shes low, everyone else is loud.

- I think you guys need to listen to ALL THREE of the segments before tlaking about audio quality.
The Neowin round-table definitley had some audio problems. But I do know that the Google Adwords segment sounds fine. -
#11.1 Posted by viserov on 20 Aug 2005 - 03:00
- I have listened to all the Neowin podcasts. It doesn't change my opinion, though, about the audio quality.
-
#11.3 Posted by viserov on 20 Aug 2005 - 03:49
- I don't recall saying I didn't like the content. Please, find and quote me where I did. I just said the audio could use a bit of improving. Just because something is free doesn't mean we can't suggest improvements or comment on areas that could be better.
It's no different than someone writing in suggestions to software companies, or even for the forums Neowin. You just want something to be the very best it can. -
#11.4 Posted by Frogboy on 20 Aug 2005 - 04:17
- What I'm saying is that different segments of a given episode have different audio qualities based on what equipment different guests have.
The Google Ad words segment. [Link] from last week is as good as it's going to get - ever. If you think that has bad audio I don't know what to tell you. I listened to all three segments tonight (for the first time myself) and I agree that the round-table audio is pretty bad and there are issues with the CNN Worm segment (but it's pretty good overall) but the Google Adwords one is done with as good of audio equipment, editing, etc. as it's going to get. And listening to it, it's easily as good as any other podcast out there.
It just gets frustrating reading criticism and when you message them and try to learn more it turns out that they just loaded up one segment and listened to it for 2 minutes. As we get regular panelists and their audio equipment is perfected, it will get better. The Google Adwords segment represents the "as good" as it's going to get as that one involves people whose equipment has been upgraded as far as it's going to get.
btw, vis, I don't mean to pick on you. I apologize if I sound harsh. My frustration is what guys like Marduk who apparently imagine audio editing to be something out of Blade Runner or some other sci-fi film. Audio issues are from the originating equipment. And even if there were some magical, state of the art audio editing technology that could sharpen voices and eliminate all static on every channel, it wouldn't be practical in a free, weekly show done largely for fun.

- No, I agree with you (and I didn't take offense to your post). This was the first podcast in which the audio was difficult to listen to. I know they are new at this, so it's completely understandable.
-
#11.6 Posted by Mascrin on 21 Aug 2005 - 15:42
- Don't worry Frogboy. Most of it is just fine. The news round up was a problem but nothing that can't be fixed with better microphones for everyone who had problems. Some people here have obviously never listened to a podcast. If they expect it to sound CD quality then they're never going to be happy. this WEEK in TECH has at least as bad audio and it's the #1 podcast. Diggnation has the same problem too.
-
#12 Posted by Mascrin on 20 Aug 2005 - 03:03
- Great topics. Poor execution. Kristin Hatcher saves the show. She's a solitary light of professionalism in s a sea of mucky sound from the guests. I think you guys have great ideas but you are going to have to cut anyone who can't manage to get a decent sound setup there. If it weren't for Kristin, this eposide would be just like half a dozen other amateur geek shows with kids with skype and a $10 mic. connected to their sound blaster from their mom's basements.

- i seriously dont get what everyone is complaining about regarding the sound quality , sure its not 100% top quality but id say its about 70% quality and im hald deaf , i played it through the hifi and it was clear enough to understand , even for some one as half deaf as me, you people seem to be far too picky

- yeah kristin hatcher is easily the best part of the cast. i wouldnt be listening to it if it wasnt for her. she is the only one who seems to know what she is doing the rest seem very unprofessional about it. although professionlism isnt that important i guess.....
-
#21.1 Posted by pimpshiznid on 20 Aug 2005 - 18:59
- Let's all understand something. (and I don't by any means intend to single you out, mad_onion)
We do not get paid to do this, this is out of our free time every week. We try our best to put together a show, and try and choose decent topics. We do not have the entire week to dedicate to editing and recording. We choose a topic, record, and edit. We cannot re-record a half dozen times because it didn't come out right. We all have jobs, and this is not part of them.
Another point worth noting is a lot of the complaining is coming over voice quality. While I understand a lot of it, you may note that on our first topic, the Neowin roundup, we had 5 different people taking part. We used Skype for that, and anyone who has ever made a Skype conference call should note that once you get more than 3 users, the sound quality goes down dramatically. We are looking at more efficient ways of doing this, but this was the very first podcast in which the Conference Call feature was completely loaded. We are not all on gigabit network connections. We are not all in the same room. We are connecting together to create something for everyone to listen to from seperate parts in the United States (and with time, the world). Network latency is something you will deal with in every internet communication application.
We also have no scripts. This isn't meant to sound like a monotone news brief. It is meant to sound like a discussion amongst several people about the current news topics.
This is only the third episode. Like with any other podcast, all of them start out slow until you get the grip on how to properly do things. Give poweruser.tv time, and I am sure it will develop into something that is much better.
-
#21.2 Posted by Frogboy on 20 Aug 2005 - 23:28
- Well said Pimp!
PowerUser.tv isn't some service people are paying for. It's what a bunch of friends from Neowin and WC have put together for fun. It's all volunteer, and we're learning as we go.
I just came back from the lake and listened to Twit.tv a lot and they have the same problems even in episodw 17, they had some serious Skype issues with Dvorak and this is Dvorak we're talking about. As time goes on, it'll all get perfected.

#22 Posted by warwagon on 21 Aug 2005 - 16:44
- my comment has seemed to have disapeared, so on the off chance it got nuked, let me refaise it with alittle less warwagon.
Over all it was very good, but the one part I didn't like is when the one guy said it bunch of times in a row on how they were releasing the just the source code to the engine and not the entire game, I think everyone understood it the frst time around.
