Hitachi Unveils 8GB Miniature Hard Disk

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies recently introduced a miniature 8GB hard disk drive that it believes with be all the rage in light, portable storage. The new drive, known as "Mikey" or Microdrive 3K8, is a 1" form factor device with a rotational speed of 3600rpm and an average seek time of 12ms. Mikey utilizes the CE-ATA interface which provides a peak 33MB/sec transfer speed. As the consumer market pushes for smaller and smaller devices, Microdrive 3K8 has many potential applications in the consumer electronics market. Hitachi GST also stated a 6GB model will be available.

I wonder if this could be used for cell phones, palm pilot's, blackberry's and the like. Very exciting and promising news though.

Samsung has already put this in place, putting a 1.5 Gb HDD inside one of their phones.
