Advertisement (Why?)
Beta 1 for the next generation Firefox browser is now available to download. Version 1.5 is due to be released this year, but Beta 1 allows you to get a first glimpse at some of the enhancements the Mozilla team are hoping to include in the next version of the browser.

Included in Beta 1 is a now updated “Automated Update” feature, allowing users to update the browser with updates less than half a megabyte or smaller. There has also been an improvement to how extensions are updated. Also included in Deer Park is the ability to drag and drop browser tabs so that they can be put in any order.

Other notable improvements include an advanced popup blocker and faster browsing through better backwards and forwards buttons. Beta 1 also includes the latest security enhancements. Beta 1 (Deer Park) is available to download from the Mozilla homepage.

Any reason a Firefox beta gets front page?
#5.1 warwagon on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:39
any reason why it shouldn't

uh could it be because most of the users here use firefox and this IS a computer tech site
#5.2 Ambience on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:43
The same reason why Vista Betas etc. have been posted. Look man, I've had to put up with all this iPod news, and technically, that isn't even computer related. This is far more relevant than iPod Nano news should be, considering this is a tech-site.
#5.3 Danny Weed on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:45
Because it's a bloody beta. And no, i doubt most of the users that visit neowin use Firefox, a large amount of them proberbly do, but not he majority.

Yes, it's a computer tech site, i don't see why a beta browser should get FPN though.
#5.4 frogworm on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:48
"uh could it be because most of the users here use firefox"

i use Opera thank you very much.
#5.5 vetcashman on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:52
Actually, if you look at most of the polls on the forum firefox is actually used by more people than IE and Opera.

This isn't just a Beta for any product, it is one that is used by millions of people, has a big media prescense and is one of the main competitors in the browser market. Its new for Beta 1.5, the next main version of the browser.

EDIT: Directed at Danny, not the person above my post.
#5.6 Miran on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:02
Maybe it is posted here for the same reason it is posted on Slashdot. It is important to a large amount of people. Just watch how many comments there will be in this story by the end of the day.

you think people using Firefox will be more inclined to be proud and vote in such a survey

and anyway, im sure the admins know which browser is most used on this site, and if they wanted to tell us they could.
#5.9 Danny Weed on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:42
@cashman: Most people who visit the forums are guests, they can't vote in polls
#5.10 Kalphegor on 09 Sep 2005 - 17:00
Because is the best browser ever. Period.
#5.11 Smigit on 10 Sep 2005 - 10:02
Not only did IE 7 beta get a few frontpage posts it also got a full blooded review. Yes a front page review for what is a beta product.

Who cares why it was posted, maybe because theres a few hundred or thousand people that want to know this news? if it doesnt interest you ignore it and move on.
#6 Kurono on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:46
How come starting in paragraph two, Firefox changes to Deer Park?

Oh well, I've been using Deer Park Alpha 2 and the new 1.5 since last night and it's looking good.
#7 TRC on 09 Sep 2005 - 15:46
It's not called Deer Park anymore. Seems to work fine, and I like the tab reordering option. It still likes to eat up memory though.

Does anyone know how to make the old extensions work?
#8.1 Ava3ar on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:17
if you modify the install.rdf to 1.5 it should work

be warned dont use any themes becasue quite a few theme changes have happened since 1.6a1 and even DPa1 so they wont work/look right at all in 1.5a1
#8.2 Angry_Badger on 09 Sep 2005 - 18:13
Use this great extension to force compatability:

hiyas, back when v1 was released you could change version number somewhere and it would make all extensions work, where can i change it? i could use my extensions once again but i forgot where the v# was saved
#9.1 alexp2_ad on 09 Sep 2005 - 17:43
1. Download the original XPI extension, one that works in Deer Park.

2. Open it in WinRAR (or similair).

3. Extract the install.rdf file.

4. Open it in notepad (or similair...) and look for the target application bit (if there's more than one then pick the one with the ID below) and modify it like this:

QUOTE

<em:targetApplication>
<RDF: Description>
<em:id>{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}</em:id>
<em:minVersion>0.8+</em:minVersion>
<em:maxVersion>1.5</em:maxVersion>
</RDF: Description>
</em:targetApplication>

5. Save the file and place it back into the XPI using winrar.

6. Install extension.

Or I suppose you could open the firefox executable in ResHack and change the version info... but that might confuse it, it might try to update etc... but it would save time.

wouldnt even start after a fresh install
totally sucks
#10.1 Ava3ar on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:15
some people are reporting that if you remove DP2 (if installed) you should be able to get it to work

although if you just launch original make a new profile, and then use that one for 1.5a1 it might work
(2 replies) #11 Miran on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:03
I still wish they would use keychain on OS X. And they still aren't using the native OS X widgets (buttons, radios, checkboxes, etc)..

Other than that it seems to start a bit faster but time will tell.
#11.1 Ava3ar on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:14
iirc thats planed for 2.0

Users of this one should be pleased to see that it has basically Opera's back/forward navigation speeds, and general improvements in the renderer quality otherwise too.

What's that extension which backups your profile?
#16.1 thorazine on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:53
It isnt an extension but a separate app: MozBackup
#16.2 jasidog on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:59
The bookmark backup extension here >> http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/ will also back up all your important profile settings if you set it to I think.
(3 replies) #17 brianshapiro on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:37
The tab reordering seems adapted from an extension I downloaded before; it looks exactly the same, with the arrows. The browser still seems to have problems with memory. Not that amazing of Mozilla. The reason I wonder why its front page news isn't because its Firefox, but because its not that interesting of a beta or release.
#17.1 Mathiasdm on 09 Sep 2005 - 17:01
Actually, there are some very important changes!
-Automatic updates (Notification of an update is more prominent, and updates to Firefox may now be half a megabyte or smaller. Updating extensions has also improved.): many people have been requesting this for a long time!
-Drag and drop reordering for browser tabs.
-New support for Web Standards including SVG, CSS 2 and CSS 3, and JavaScript 1.6 (Wooh! Finally SVG support - And CSS3: support for columns.)
-A few bug fixes
-Faster rendering and faster browser navigation with improvements to back and forward button performance.

A full feature list: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/1.5beta1.html
#17.2 em_te on 09 Sep 2005 - 23:23
Yeah, the tab reordering code was directly borrowed from that extension. Even the variable names and circuitous way of coding is preserved.
#17.3 Mathiasdm on 10 Sep 2005 - 07:51
I hope they got the bug out of the extension. When I moved a tab while another was reloading, Firefox would crash on me.
(1 reply) #18 thorazine on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:44
Version 1.5 will break all kinds of **** for themes and extensions so install on a new profile (search MozillaZine Knowledge Base to find out how to create/select Firefox profiles if you dont know how to) to avoid breaking anything.

I cant believe they havent fixed the memory leak yet? I suppose thats planned for Firefox 7.0 (dont worry they will jump from 1.5 to 7.0 straight to get in line with Internet Explorer 7
#18.1 Ava3ar on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:57
try removing flash and java, then say if they havent fixed the memory leak, LOL
(1 reply) #19 jivemastert on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:46
so, does it have native support for xml data islands yet? cause if it does, then im doing my site up full of them! muahahahaha!!!!
#19.1 quintesse on 10 Sep 2005 - 09:42
Not data islands like MS uses them but it does support JavaScript 1.6 which has native support for XML! Like this:

var test = <foo baz="123"><bar/></foo>;

and do things like:

test.foor.@baz = "456";

Actually pretty cool. Read more here New in Javascript 1.6

<-is a firefox eye candy (aka themes) and extensions junky, so I am gonna wait until the final comes out later "yea I know, spineless"................

All in all I love FF yea it chews a bit of memory but most if not all of today's PC's can more than handle it..............(pimps and modders insert PC specs here, I cant be arsed)

Will sit on the bench and wait..............now who has the juice and orange quaters? oi Ref make with the refreshments................
#20.1 Ava3ar on 09 Sep 2005 - 16:59
most extensions will work in 1.5a1 if you modify the install.rdf

the reason themes dont work right is becasue the way things are placed is different to stable and DPa1

I have to agree with you. I can use Opera in 18MB with a dozen tabs open. I've witnessed Firefox at 112MB and even more VM with only two tabs open. Otherwise it would be a great browser.

ok i'm confused
The nightly builds:

Firefox (deer park alpha 2): Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20050909 Firefox/1.6a1

Thunderbird - version 1.6a1 (20050909)

I guess these are newer and they're working on two branches at the same time? because 1.5 beta 1 identifies itself as

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050908 Firefox/1.4

#24.1 qbie on 09 Sep 2005 - 21:24
There are two "branches"

Branch = What will become firefox 1.5, with mainly only bugfixes going in

Trunk = Ongoing development, new features, mega breakage.

You can get nightly builds of both Branch and Trunk.

#26.1 Z3r0 on 09 Sep 2005 - 19:16
XP SP2 IEXPLORE.exe 30,456 K
firefox.exe 27,528 K

website on this topic

after posting this topic in firefox 29,376 K
after posting this topic in iexplorer is 29,400 K

go figure? my guess is firefox must load some extra stuff up during run time whereas iexplore loads it all at the start.

Well, according to what I heard, Windows task management never shows the memory use correctly. Can anyone confirm this?

Not bad, I don't like the look or when you click on something on the program on Firefox it self with that horrible border around it.

All I want is a newer versio of Adblock, as it doesn't work with 1.5
#27.1 toadeater on 09 Sep 2005 - 20:06
Like Adblock Plus?

http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=774

Make sure you uninstall the old version before installing this. Also set Obj-Tabs to disabled until a new version is released.

Personally I think their time is better spent fixing things that people are actually going to use, instead of silly things like embedding images in css and all sorts of things nobody would ever use even if every browser supported them

Firefox URL Domain Name Buffer Overflow

Classified - HIGHLY CRITICAL

Affects version 1.x, including 1.5 b1

Don't be too quick to rush out and download this version. They should be (hopefully) fixing this soon.

QUOTE
om Ferris has discovered a vulnerability in Firefox, which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or potentially to compromise a user's system.

The vulnerability is caused due to an error in the handling of an URL that contains the 0xAD character in its domain name. This can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow.

Successful exploitation crashes Firefox and may potentially allow code execution but requires that the user is tricked into visiting a malicious web site or open a specially crafted HTML file.

The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 1.0.6, and is reported to affect versions prior to 1.0.6, and version 1.5 Beta 1.
#33.1 Smigit on 10 Sep 2005 - 10:06

Google Toolbar doesn't work with it; then again, it doesn't work on IE7, either.
