Samsung recently announced a 16GB NAND flash memory at a press conference in Seoul, South Korea. The high capacity flash memory was made possible by using advanced multi-level cell technology based on the 50 nanometer process, a first for the industry. On average, NAND parts are less expensive to produce than NOR, another type of flash memory. Combined, the flash memory market grew to $4.1 billion in the second quarter of 2005, a four percent leap from $3.9 billion in the first quarter. Samsung, a large player in the flash memory market, controls 55 percent of the overall NAND flash memory sales.

if this is gigabit doesnt that addup to.. 2 gigabytes?
Yes, the capital "B" means bytes, and 16GB=16 gigabytes=128 gigabits. However, the story is wrong: it's 16 gigabit NAND flash. Or so I've been led to believe.

i read somewhere that 16gb was the up most limit. it was just a matter of time reaching it. is this true?
edit: they already have 8gb flash chips.. so im guessing this is actual 16 gigabyte chip.
mitodna

Besides, it would make devices like the iPod nano much smaller and cheaper to produce in the future (fewer chips in a device = let time spent manufacturing = cheaper price OR more profits)
