Samsung recently announced a 16GB NAND flash memory at a press conference in Seoul, South Korea. The high capacity flash memory was made possible by using advanced multi-level cell technology based on the 50 nanometer process, a first for the industry. On average, NAND parts are less expensive to produce than NOR, another type of flash memory. Combined, the flash memory market grew to $4.1 billion in the second quarter of 2005, a four percent leap from $3.9 billion in the first quarter. Samsung, a large player in the flash memory market, controls 55 percent of the overall NAND flash memory sales.

Samsung should take the opportunity to release their own cheap 16GB flash mp3 player.

gigabit or gigabyte...
if this is gigabit doesnt that addup to.. 2 gigabytes?
#4.1 neufuse on 12 Sep 2005 - 21:37
yes 16 Gbit = 2 GByte
#4.2 rakiner on 12 Sep 2005 - 21:56
It uses a capital B so it is most likely gigabytes.

Yes, the capital "B" means bytes, and 16GB=16 gigabytes=128 gigabits. However, the story is wrong: it's 16 gigabit NAND flash. Or so I've been led to believe.

16GB is the limit of flash memory isnt it?

i read somewhere that 16gb was the up most limit. it was just a matter of time reaching it. is this true?

edit: they already have 8gb flash chips.. so im guessing this is actual 16 gigabyte chip.

make that 8 16Gb. the 16 16Gb in one chip is 32 GB
#6.2 mitodna on 13 Sep 2005 - 00:05
thanks for the correction, i think the max is 16GB, it is 16gigabit density

16 gigabits is the density of storage for ONE chip, meaning you can and are likely to have many more.

Besides, it would make devices like the iPod nano much smaller and cheaper to produce in the future (fewer chips in a device = let time spent manufacturing = cheaper price OR more profits)

Not really, you can bet they have this patented, so Apple cannot use it./

samsung doesn't need to introduce their own mp3 player. If they can simply supply the parts to all the player manufacturers, then they get good business without any of the marketing, interface, licensing, and shipping costs associated with putting out an mp3 player. Thats good business in my opinion.
