The Internet's key oversight agency approved a domain name for the Catalan language Thursday while deferring final action on creating a red-light district on the Internet through a ".xxx" suffix. Creating the ".cat" suffix for individuals, organizations and companies that promote the Catalan language and culture was relatively uncontroversial. Though the language is spoken largely in certain regions of Spain, backers say a domain name could unify Catalan speakers who live in France, Italy, Andorra and elsewhere. The name could begin appearing in use next year.

As for ".xxx," the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers deferred final approval for the second time in as many months. The board decided to seek changes to a proposed contract with ICM Registry Inc., the Jupiter, Fla., that would run the domain name for voluntary use by the adult entertainment industry. No details were immediately available on the changes sought.

Keep going ICANN. Don't forget to make one for every other language. And with .mobi for mobile device specialised content they should consider .mobicatxxx for pr0n on mobile devices in Catalan.

Ooops, but what if it is Pr0n in Cantalan for mobile devices only in Mexico? I know, left have another tld that is .mobicattxxxpe

Namespace is a relatively simple concept. Why is it that ICANN does not get it?

i think the .xxx should be made. In that way its easy to stop porn sites on your pc with firewalls, also easy for hackers to shut down and .xxx sites.

Imageine if all porn sites were closed, how fast would the internet be.

Porn sites exist because people are paying for that kind of content. Now that's not to say that I don't agree with a .xxx domain. I say go ahead with .xxx and force all adult content to be moved to it. That way, we can finally get somewhere as far as blocking that content from kids.

Nonsense.

The .xxx tld is a revenue earner, nothing more.

Who exactly is going to "force" porn site holders to buy and migrate their sites to the new domain? And lose all the brand awareness of their existing domain?

No one, that is who. There is already the PACS system for identifying adult content, but no one is forced to use it, and no one can be forced.

It was great to see that Catalan people now exist in the Internet.

Just for you guys that may be unplugged about the controversy that we are involved here in Spain.

We, catalan people, have our own parliament, own national team (only allowed to play on unofficial matches), own language (which is used to teach in all subjects in school and university) more than 6 million spoken people in Spain, it´s the official language for Andorra (small country in the Pyrennes), and few more in the south of France and Cerdenya (Italy).

Compared to finish, swedish, gaelic, ducth, etc., catalan as a language is much more widely used but until 2006 we didn´t have a .cat domain.

Personally it was time to have a .cat domain, so it is a very good news to keep the language alive.

I feel like a politician, but thanks god I'm not ;-))
