- Bah, no sidebar or other goodies

-
#1.1 Posted by scyphe on 17 Sep 2005 - 14:44
- Goodies included:
3D-lization of all currently running apps when pressing win+space, updating the screens realtime.
Hover mouse over apps in taskbar gives you a preview realtime shot of the app even though it's minimized.
And probably some other things I haven't found yet.

- Does this mean that the ISO leaked to the net is actually different than that to what MS is hosting?
-
#2.1 Posted by Neobond on 16 Sep 2005 - 10:35
- Probably not, the PDC build that attendees got (and was probably leaked) is the same as this build.
Microsoft also had 5219 but with extra functionality for the purpose of showing them off at the conference (different date and lab). -
#2.2 Posted by heslo on 16 Sep 2005 - 10:41
- Ah, that's what I thought; so essentially there were two 5219 builds with different time stamps according to corresponding labs, one with sidebar, etc that remains with MS and one being handed out to testers at PDC and the wild?
-
#2.3 Posted by Neobond on 16 Sep 2005 - 10:49
- People have been posting thats its possible to enable the sidebar, I haven't seen any guides other than someone saying the sysoc.inf file can be edited by removing all references of HIDE which enables the option to install sidebar functionality (I can't confirm this yet).
-
#2.4 Posted by heslo on 16 Sep 2005 - 10:50
- Ah, that's similar to showing the hidden references in Add/Remove Programs. Well, once I get this build, I'll see if I can go about enabling it

- Anyone else having problems installing ATI's LDDM drivers on this build?
-
#3.1 Posted by Lexcyn on 16 Sep 2005 - 13:14
- Haha, I was until I moved my monitor from DVI port 1 to DVI port 2, and now it works perfect.
-
#3.2 Posted by Hurmoth on 16 Sep 2005 - 13:36
-
I have a notebook I'm trying to install it on... no DVI ports to work with
-
#3.4 Posted by scyphe on 17 Sep 2005 - 14:46
- The biggest problem with LDDM/VDDM-drivers right now is that the technical spec. isn't finalized yet, and ATI/nVidia aren't likely to put much effort into making 100% drivers for something that will change with time. But I do wish they released refreshed drivers for each release to fix some of the serious bugs.

- Was there ever an invite code for testing Vista?
-
#6.1 Posted by neufuse on 16 Sep 2005 - 12:59
- short answer, no. It went to MVP's and previous windows testers first, then additional people second

- just to let people know, 5219 is a lot slower then 5112 was. It contains a lot of debugging information that is slowing down Aero and DWM. Install time may also be increased... This is an internal build, so they wern't trying to get everything working or make it fast. Also F6 load drivers doesnt work and partitioning doesnt work in setup when booted from DVD. You have to manunally partition it or integrate your RAID or SATA drivers into the setup, however, that is hard since XIMAGE doesn't work either from the old build with the new one.

- that's not quite true; this build was polished up over a week because they knew they'd be releasing it to the PDC.
-
#10.2 Posted by neufuse on 16 Sep 2005 - 15:23
- yes it is very true, MS is even posting messages in the private beta groups saying where all the bugs are and all the problems.. Includeing the F6 problem and performance issues
you have to remember the build they demoed at PDC isn't the same build of 5219 that the end users and testers got. MS disabled a lot of "inwork" stuff for the release and kept that stuff on for the demos only

- hmmm i remember when there was a time where MS released a new build every friday for windows betas. atleast testing made sense. testing on a 4-5 month old build really does no one good.
-
#11.1 Posted by Yvo on 16 Sep 2005 - 13:51
- i am really talking about beta 1 here, not this release... sorry for the confusion
-
#11.3 Posted by threedaysdwn on 16 Sep 2005 - 16:36
- Umm, I don't remember Windows ever releasing betas that often. Even back in the Win98 days... unless you mean before that.
Usually there was Beta 1, Beta 2, Beta 2 refresh (sometimes two of these), Beta 3, RC0, and so on... -
#11.4 Posted by Joshie on 16 Sep 2005 - 17:42
- Yeah, I remember those days. Especially during the Windows98/98SE era. There were regular builds available for download *only*. CD releases were fewer and farther between. But if you had the will to download it yourself, I'd say new ones were out every week or two.

- Looks like either not a lot of beta testers are downloading or Microsoft provides higher bandwidth, I am getting it at close to 900 Kb/sec mmm not bad for me.
I know some of you get much much faster than my Comcast connection, but it is good enough for me.

- patience is a virtue, finally get to download it legitimately. kinda sucks that they have to remove some PDC functionality.

That just made me laugh. As a news story, this unnecessary piece of information is only valuable to one group of people: pirates waiting for search criteria for eDonkey and BT.

According to our source, this test build does not feature the sidebar or IE quick-tabs that have been demonstrated at the PDC. It does however include Tablet and Media Center functionality.
The Pre-Beta 2 x86/32 build is a DVD image just over 2.8 GB in size and carries the label vista_usa_5219.050830-2010_x86fre_win-dvd.iso, slightly different than the demo build.
