A Dell laptop computer that costs around $1,000, depending on configurations, and comes with the Mandriva Linux operating system pre-installed is now available, the European Linux company announced Friday.

The Dell Latitude 110L comes with Mandriva Linux Limited Edition 2005, WIFI, a 1.4-1.7 GHZ mobile Celeron or Pentium M, 256-1280MB of RAM, and a DVD Drive. According to Mandriva, Dell's rival Hewlett-Packard will follow suit.

A Dell spokesman in the U.S. said he was unfamiliar with the Mandriva configuration.

The only Latitude 110L I found on Dell's website was already out of program and only refurbished ones were available... I'd like to see this really happen though; Linux needs as much exposure as possible.

Edit: Ah, I found it on the UK site, but it doesn't mention Mandriva... Only Windows XP still... It'll probably come up later today. Then again, it's already 11AM there... I'm confused then. Ah well, I give up. I've got to get some sleep.

I don't deem it promising.

Because as someone who has spent many, many hours finding the perfect configuration and tweaking every setting on his laptop, it would be nice to have one that works perfectly out of the box.

And we don't need to know why people need to run Linux either.
Why? For exactly the same reason we don't need to know why people need to run Windows

IMO Dell is just trying to get a better licensing deal from Microsoft.
