Thanks to an anonymous member for sending this our way. Microsoft Mail Beta is Microsoft's brand new web mail service. The product is being built from the ground up based on input and feedback from customers.
Just a short note to let you know a [Mail Beta] refresh is on it's way. When you login this afternoon, you will see a new version (11.00.0003.0052) at the bottom of the Mail Beta page.

Additions to the Mail Beta include Drag-n-Drop messages, Right-click functionality, the ability to delete folders, and we think we fixed the issue of additional Spam getting into your mailboxes. Additionally, we've added support for Localization.

    Sincerely,
The Mail team and the Beta team.

Version 0.9.9 is a major milestone release of Kapsules.

Kapsules has seen a lot of changes since the last version. The Widget Settings, Window and main Configuration dialogs were completely redesigned and new controls were added to make changing settings a breeze. Special attention was paid to widget developers and nearly every request from developers for new widget capabilities and features were implemented. Several widget-authoring aspects were completely redone from the ground up. Once again resource use and speed was paid special attention. More assistance and support for scripting languages were added to make use of the widgets, which use these alternative languages easier for users.

In the end, I fear it will be another "depending on your country" service, just like Hotmail.

it sounds like to me another microsoft project that is completely unnecessary. whats the problem with hotmail, its not a bad system by any means! why does microsoft always put so much time into 'new' programs or redesigns in pointless areas rather than concentrate in putting out a really solid feature packed overall product in vista :s

Completely different teams/divisions are working on Vista and Microsoft Mail. Don't for a second think that working on Mail means less time on Vista.

And Hotmail (or MS Mail) was in need of a redesign, it was falling far behind other free webmail providers. Don't for

Does this compete with Hotmail or something?

They better offer something awesome cause I've got all those years of hate built up against them from the time before Gmail where I had to do with 2MB of storage. WTF were they thinking with 2 F****** MB?! Then almost a year later, they realise that we might want more than 2MB of storage and give us 250MB, which is still 10x less than Gmail.
I can't understand how Microsoft could fall so far behind here.

Before Google made a game of it 2MB of storage wasn't bad for a free webmail service. Most people who wanted more bought an account or used their isp.

I don't have a problem with the 2MB storage either, since I can back up my Hotmail e-mail locally in my Outlook inbox because I still luckily have access to the Outlook Web Dav integration with Hotmail.

"You are currently using 1 MB (0%) of your 2611 MB." I doubt I'm going to need 2.6GB of storage space for emails. All mail with attachments I generally delete because it's pointless to back it up. Also storing emails with friends saying "hi" is pointless. 2MB would be plenty for me . I'd love to see some SS btw.

They HAVE to rethinkg how to displace contacts. It's pain in the arse to find a contact out of 100 contacts you have and you can only view about 10 contacts at a time.

I'm in the beta, and so far I have to say that I'm not impressed. It is just a beta though, there should be plenty more functionality added in by the end (if this refresh is any idication of things to come)

Its like midnight in Microsoft land and I'm still getting the old beta version when I sign in
#11.1 ClintEastman on 20 Sep 2005 - 09:20
