Steven Bink, of Bink.nu, has noted that SP2 features more than just security updates to Office. Indeed, for Outlook at least, a bundle of new features can be found.

Outlook now boasts improved anti-phishing software, which can be seen in the screenshots below. Faced with an increasingly dangerous 'email landscape', Microsoft have improved the way in which Outlook deals with dubious messages, and attempts to better inform the user. In emails where Outlook suspects something might be a bit fishy (no pun intended), it disables links in the message.

SP2, released earlier this week with relatively little fanfare, is probably the last update for Office until version twelve, expected in 2006. The next generation of Office was given a lot of attention at the recent PDC conference, and features major UI and functionality improvements.

Microsoft has not released a list detailing specific updates and changes with SP2, so, if you do find something new in any of the Office 2003 programs, leave a comment below.

Phishing may be good for easily fooled or e-mail optimists, but something applying to everyone is spam.
Heck, often even if you haven't revealed your address.

Give it a learnable bayesian filter like any modern e-mail client should have. They have one in Outlook 2003, but with the brilliant design decision that it isn't learnable. Works great to adapt and keep up to date with new spam techniques... :p

But I guess they have to push that for Office 12 to give it something new to encourage people spending money on instead. The beauty of the closed source model -- delay features for later product releases' profits. Company's win, consumer's loss.

You should watch the Windows Mail vid. on Channel 9 - I think you'll change your mind about teachable bayesian filters after that (I know I did)!

- Hope that helps

Outlook's filters catch about 99% of spam that comes to me (several hundred a day, annoyingly) and i only get false positives on maybe 1 a week. If it ain't broke, don't fix it i say...

i installed yesterday and the only problem i have is that we have a SIP server setup on campus which requires us to user windows messenger for chat with other employees, and before sp2, my outlook integrated my windows messenger contact list, well now it's configured to use my msn messenger contact list instead so now all of my contacts show up as if they are not contacts since it's trying to use MSN (which i also use at work) and i cant get it to go back
any ideas?

I installed the pack today and have not really seen any visible changes. Perhaps under the hood, who knows!

Lol - that looks just like the default page icon from nontroppo's Breeze Micro skin for opera!
#6.4 shao on 28 Sep 2005 - 15:08
because no one ever takes icons and art assets from microsoft to use them for their own purposes, do they!

How did you get your incoming mail/inbox to display in the navigation pane Skyypunk?
#8.1 Indy_Mav on 28 Sep 2005 - 16:23
I'm not Skyypunk but I believe that's just a clip of his inbox on the left and his reading/preview pane on the right.

Um, you might want to excise this completely erroneous sentence:

"Microsoft has not released a list detailing specific updates and changes with SP2."
#9.1 Hawkeye on 28 Sep 2005 - 21:12
I was thinking the same thing actually. Microsoft actually did list all the updates, fixes, and changes in SP2.

It is in the Microsoft KB article about it.

#12 darkmark327 on 29 Sep 2005 - 02:05
It says "a bundle of new features" but I count one. ?
#13 griffinme on 29 Sep 2005 - 14:43
Not sure if this is a new feature or not.
HTML mail in my junk folder is being converted to plain text; "This message was converted to plain text."

Since when is this a new feature? Outlook 2003 has ALWAYS done this for me... At least since SP1. And yes, I'm talking about items in the inbox, NOT in the Junk Mail Folder...
