Building on the already fruitfull relationship of AOL and HP, Hewlett Packard announced Monday that they will be pre-installing the Netscape browser onto all new machines.

Back in 1999 Netscape licensed their custom Internet portal service to the giant OEM. Today's announcement is the first distribution deal since the 1990s when the browser wars were strong.

Customer of HP will be able to choose Netscape as their default browser during computer setup. Icons for the browser, which will be customized with links to HP and Compaq Web sites, will appear in the Windows Start menu.

HP hopes the inbuilt anti-phishing and spyware tools will enhance users experiences with the web and their HP machines. Netscape 8 is based on Firefox, but lets users switch between both the Firefox and IE browser engines. Many Web sites have been built to work with IE, so supporting both the Firefox and IE engines maximizes compatibility.

According to news.com Nick Labosky, a director at HP, said in a statement "We specifically chose the Netscape browser because it has the added advantage of hosting numerous security features while also having the ability to run both the Triton (IE) and Gecko (Firefox) rendering engines."

This is good, drive up market share of alternative browsers even more.
#2 leesmithg on 04 Oct 2005 - 10:02
Netscape v4.79 was a neat little browser for netscape, they've gone down hill since then.
(1 reply) #3 domgrimm on 04 Oct 2005 - 10:44
I had no idea Netscape still existed
#3.1 tapo on 05 Oct 2005 - 00:01
It doesn't.

AOL outsourced Netscape development to a third party for Netscape 8.0. God knows why, considering they funded the Mozilla Foundation and already have two IE-based browsers of their own, AOL Browser and the one included in AOL client software.

No problem. We reimage all our new computers when they come in.
#4.1 Jason on 04 Oct 2005 - 11:30
Same here, IE will be back to being the only browser with a policy blocking others.
#4.2 Ateoto on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:42
Lets hope you enforce a decent policy for IE otherwise that move would just be incompetent.

Netscape? Ugh. They turned Firefox into an ugly mess.
#5.1 Staind on 04 Oct 2005 - 12:51
True, I dislike the Netscape UI, like a 60's or 70's fashion. But mess, well, not really.

Umm yes, which is why they choose Netscape. This allows them to render in Firefox's Gecko and also IE's Triton. RTFA.

Netscape and Firefox are both free, except Netscape is a GUI update (not inferring that the update was good... but an update nevertheless) of Firefox.

Why would HP ever consider PAYING for a browser? Opera doesn't belong in your statement.
#6.2 Tungsten T on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:28
Opera is free now

Go to Opera.com
#6.3 xTrinity on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:48
I guess I will have to D/L Opera now.

But in relation to the article, Opera's announcement came too late (just a few days ago? Should have been: few years ago?). There's no chance of HP dropping Netscape anytime soon. Better luck next year. Or maybe with other vendors.
#6.4 tapo on 05 Oct 2005 - 00:14
The huge problem with Netscape 8.0 is because it keeps switching between Trident and Gecko. As a result, the user interfaces switch. You have different contextual menus between the two, a different find dialog, different autocomplete, and different saved form information, and different shortcuts. This makes it completely unusable and confusing as hell. Not only that, but it's also a very hard to find option to switch manually. Website not rendering properly under Gecko? No problem, just...um...damn...toggle something. I don't know what right-click menu it's nested under.

The only reason Netscape 8.0 is on HP computers is because AOL wants their portal being used, and paid for the privilege. It has nothing to do with Netscape being able to switch between the two.

If HP actually cared about user choice, they'd put Firefox on there. Because when the average user see a site requires IE, he's not going to go digging for a Netscape preference, he's going to launch IE.

Sorry for the rant, but I think AOL's bloated spyware gives Firefox and other alternative browsers a bad name.

Great, all we need is more AOL crap on our new PCs.
#8 russ0943 on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:02
what the hell are they smokin?
#9 PR. on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:12
Great, another thing to have to manually install when we have computers bought for work. Why can't they just leave XP as the base install and stick all the other crap on a CD.
#10 capeche on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:16
This is a really good idea. It should have happened years ago.
#11 LPC on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:16
Har har shows how out of touch HP are .

This can't be right, the EU's argument was that Microsoft didn't allow this stuff, that there was no alternative, that Microsoft killed the competition. This must be a late April fools joke, because the EU has just stolen... oops, "earnt" millions of dollars based on the idea that OEMs had no choice but to include WMP and nothing else.

Something I always found funny because my computer came installed with like two other media players when I got it from an OEM, which I uninstalled right away. Says a lot for the EU's case, unless common sense and cases like this are not allowed into the court case.

Hey, the legal arguments were all BS from the start. The EU wanted some Microsoft money and they got it.

Extortion isn't a crime if a government does it.
#13 BigBoy on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:45
Netscape... unlike FF, it really IS bloatware, much more so than IE... thanks HP! As in there is not enough crap already preinstalled on computers!
#14 funnyperson1 on 04 Oct 2005 - 13:49
This makes a lot of sense actually, I just got a dv4000 as a replacement for my X1000 and found it really odd that the default page for IE was the Netscape portal.

****...... that's the reason why I never install those homebrewed version of windows when I have to setup a new Dell, HP, etc. They come with so much crap it's insane. And who in hell needs Netscape? I don't want that bloated **** anywhere even if i'm not using the computer i'm setting up.
Firefox and/or Opera would've been a better addition... but Netscape
that's retarded

Tip of the day... ask one of your friend, co-worker for a plain retail CD of windows pro... and use your key Dell or HP gave you to install a PROPER and CLEAN version of windows
#15.1 funnyperson1 on 04 Oct 2005 - 14:55
Actually HP does give you a normal Windows XP OEM cd and the rest of the software/drivers come seperately so if you want to install a clean version of XP that is an option out of the box.
#16 ripgut on 04 Oct 2005 - 14:52
Haven't any of you youngings ever thought of the market taht HP is targeting? Ever hear of the average home user? A user friendly GUI? there not focused on"1337 haxorz on t3h n30w1n"

I don't like Netscape personally but im sure there software has improved over the years and could still be of some use, to average Joe.
#17 JoDaddy on 04 Oct 2005 - 15:33
Why does it seem that when an advancement is made in this area it's not really with the consumer in mind?
(2 replies) #18 mr_demilord on 04 Oct 2005 - 15:54
I heard Netscape has spyware in it.
#18.1 lbmouse on 04 Oct 2005 - 16:21
FUD ... link to your source. Netscape 8.0 is just a Moz based browser with GUI enhancements. Many of the Netscape developers are also part of the Firefox team.
#18.2 em_te on 04 Oct 2005 - 21:46
There was a post a while back that said that Google tracks every link you go to and that since Firefox bundles Google search by default, that is stretched to imply that Firefox bundles spyware. Maybe Mr_DemiMoore was referring to that?
(1 reply) #19 TRC on 04 Oct 2005 - 19:58
"What is a Firefox?". That is what a lot of people will ask if you mention that browser. Not everyone is a geek like us that surfs Neowin and other tech sites. Everyone has heard of Netscape though. It's all about brand recognition.
#19.1 rm20010 on 05 Oct 2005 - 00:46
Actually, not quite. Most people have heard of Firefox by now. (Not EVERYONE, but a good amount of people.)
#20 Magallanes on 04 Oct 2005 - 22:28
The truth is Mozilla is owner by Netscape... of course Mozilla is opensource.. is free.. is for everyone.. is peace and love.. the truth is Mozilla is a "free" subsidiary corporation from Netscape-AOL, *for a while* Mozilla is free of any AOL stuff but there was not guarantee that it will continue forever.

#21 cork1958 on 05 Oct 2005 - 09:18
Let's fire up those browser war machines full power all over again!!

NOT!!
#22 danj205 on 05 Oct 2005 - 11:12
Those poor new PC buyers that have Netscape 8 as the default browser.

It saddens me
