Thanks to oddcrap for his submission

Apple started the rumor mill churning once again today after a flurry of email invites depicting a red curtain with the words "One more thing..." inscribed across it. The invite is for an event scheduled for October 12th at the California Theater in San Jose - the same venue where Apple introduced the iPod Photo and U2 Edition iPod almost exactly one year ago, lending credence to the belief that the announcement involves the iPod product line.

Industry analysts speculate that Apple will unveil a video capable iPod, but the announcement could also involve its Macintosh computer line. Apple holds 75% of the digital music player market, and could be looking to fend off Sony's PSP in the multifunctional music/video player market.

Apple loves attention.
#1.1 shao on 05 Oct 2005 - 22:11
yeah. then again, people posting rumours on the front pages of their 'reputable' news sites is only just feeding their attention addiction.
#1.2 eAi on 06 Oct 2005 - 00:11
Its not rumours, the invite and event exist, the reasoning behind it is speculation.

hmmm... cant wait to watch music videos on a tiny ipod screen.. hell if its gonna be on the ipod nano size then even worse
#2.1 Syphonic on 05 Oct 2005 - 22:05
You really think Apple are stupid enough not to enlarge the screen?
#2.2 Oompa on 05 Oct 2005 - 23:38
Yes.
#2.3 Bwizzel-B on 06 Oct 2005 - 05:43
Who cares, honestly? It'll never hold a candle to the PSP.....

Now, if Microsoft was *smart*, they'd team up with Apple to create the PSP killer, a handheld Ipod AV/Xbox gaming unit. Somehow though, I just can't see Jobs sharing the spotlight like that with the boys in Redmond. Microsoft is probably already developing something like this anyways.
#2.4 Syphonic on 06 Oct 2005 - 07:37
How do you know the video playback on this won't eclipse the PSP? You don't. Nobody knows anything about any video iPod so comparing the PSP to a currently non-existent device is rather absurd.
#2.5 Timmah on 06 Oct 2005 - 11:48
Because Apple know they don't need to create the best product out there, people will still buy the damn things.

e.g. the iPod's sound quality is by no means the best. It's actually quite poor when compared to Creative and iRiver's products - but people still think "OMGIPOD!!!11" and buy it anyway.

I dont think so. Microsoft has never released a "PC" with their brand. The only things are the Xbox and the Xbox 360. Sony have PCs, Laptops, and its Playstation series. But it wouldnt surpise me if Microsoft also tries to get into the portable scene in a couple of years.
(2 replies) #3 jami_welch on 05 Oct 2005 - 19:47
though if a video downloading service was also released this would give something not available with other players
#3.1 Neo-Luxembourg on 06 Oct 2005 - 06:46
Ohhh ... that's a realy nice point of view ... as iTunes did it for Audio files, maybe "iMovies" (?) will do it with the Video ... i already see apple selling licences to DVD-Player Vendors like DivX does
#3.2 kitchenutensils on 06 Oct 2005 - 16:24
there is already a program called iMovie lol
(9 replies) #4 Jason on 05 Oct 2005 - 19:50
Many portable devices out there already do video, so this would be nothing special just late to the market.

Oh and if it is an Ipod video expect new versions almost monthly with almost non existant new features.
#4.1 Jeremy1 on 05 Oct 2005 - 20:15
When Apple releases the video iPod they will have invented portable video players, therefore it's impossible that they could be late to the market.
#4.2 NinjaMonkey82 on 05 Oct 2005 - 20:31
Apple isn't always first to market but they are the first to do it right. Portable video players today are a joke. The exception might be the PSP but that requires memory sticks.

If or when Apple comes out with a video iPod expect a video store or some other source of easy to obtain content.
#4.3 Nova69 on 05 Oct 2005 - 20:37
"they will have invented portable video players"...

What!? they will have invented portable video players? last time I checked they are far from "inventing" it, seeing as it has already been done. Many other mp3 players have video capabilities and there are even some players that are specifically made to play videos (ex. portable dvd).
#4.4 Jeremy1 on 05 Oct 2005 - 21:32
Lies. Apple invented the portable MP3 player, and they have now invented the portable video player. Just like Google invented the search engine and webmail.

You fail at the interweb

Anyway, I welcome a video ipod, I'd be willing to purchase it if it's set at a good price.

#4.7 glitch409 on 05 Oct 2005 - 23:14
I'm sorry, it's a bit hard to get the tone of people through a computer screen

I thought I was being outrageous enough that my sarcasm would be obvious. Guess not.
#4.9 Shiranui on 06 Oct 2005 - 05:05
Don't worry, it was perfectly clear to any person of moderate intelligence.
The subsequent responses were good for a laugh.

ThinkSecret is calling for PowerMac and PowerBook updates. Considering these two haven't been updated since February and April, if memory serves, this is a hell of a lot more likely than something that will take sales away from the still-new iPod nano.
#5.1 eAi on 06 Oct 2005 - 00:13
Yes, true, but Apple Insider pointed out that iTunes has hidden images and resources that refer to video capabilities that don't exist in the current version.
#5.2 GoogleNinja on 06 Oct 2005 - 06:41
Isn't there also an icon for .ogg files? I don't see iTunes/Quicktime playing .ogg yet, so your point is invalid.
#5.3 roadwarrior on 06 Oct 2005 - 16:20
GoogleNinja, your Google skills are lacking:

Google search for iTunes .ogg plugins

Just because Apple didn't make the plugin doesn't mean that iTunes and Quicktime can't play the files. Why should Apple bother making a plugin themselves when it already exists. It is nice that they included an icon though. It shows how in touch with the open source community they are.

Remember when Steve Jobs scoffed at Microsoft's Portable Media Centers, saying there was no market for a portable device for viewing pictures and playing video?

And I'm sure they will come out with a tablet version of Mac soon.

(btw, as everyone knows, Microsoft always comes in late and copies everything)
#7.1 Byron_Hinson on 05 Oct 2005 - 21:00
and he was right, Microsoft has dumped portable media centers as they didn't sell (the Microsoft based ones)
#7.2 username(); on 05 Oct 2005 - 21:10
No, they still back and support them, your just wrong. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/portablemediacenter/default.mspx
#7.3 Ideas Man on 06 Oct 2005 - 03:00
Yeah, isn't it funny how when Microsoft does something cool and innovative, nobody gives them credit?

Steve Jobs is not a visionary, he's a thief, plain and simple. He stole the GUI, and he stole this after claiming quite loudly that nobody would want one and that they weren't going to make any of them. He's quite simply got no idea.

BTW, I'd take a PMC anyday over a crappod, especially considering the recent problems people have been having with them, and that it's tied to that crummy itunes.

Nothing's perfect. Can you honestly say you've never had a problem with a PC in your life?
#7.5 Byron_Hinson on 06 Oct 2005 - 12:13
Just because Microsoft has a page up "supporting" PMC's doesn't mean they are still continuing to create them, notice they are the same 3 PMC's that have been out for over a year, even Creative has dumped their PMC in place of their own design as Microsoft screwed them up.
#8 PlainLazy on 05 Oct 2005 - 20:48
I won't buy it myself but I hope it's a success for Apple
#9 xp1ode on 05 Oct 2005 - 21:13
i doubt very higly they can fend off attention from the PSP just by simple providing a video ipod, but then again you never know, althought imo, i would never choose an ipod over a PSP. A psp just has more features that make it way more appealing, and now with the white i saw Dazzla post in another thread, that thing is beaitufil.....
(2 replies) #10 echo on 05 Oct 2005 - 21:37
you know...i have YET to understand the hype about these IPODs. Even if they do introduct an Ipod Video. There are other, better things out. For instance...the Palm LifeDrive....WiFi, Bluetooth, 4gb HD, read office docs, check e-mail, etc....plus you can use SD memory cards to expand the memory. To me that does way more then an Ipod will ever hope to do.

I guess it's just a fashion thing.
#10.1 Jstphish on 05 Oct 2005 - 21:45
Unfortunately it is for some people.

But more importantly it is an "ease of use" thing.
#10.2 eAi on 06 Oct 2005 - 00:17
I agree, ease of use is a major factor that has made Apple the 'King' of the portable audio players. I've got a PDA, which is very useful for all sorts of things, but it can't do many things very well - for example, writing documents is fidily, playing music requires messing around finding files, browsing the net is frustrating as rendering is poor etc. I'm sure convergent devices suit lots of people, but many more probably would prefer a video/audio player that works really well than a device that does lots of things ok...

More of a surprise factor than images being leaked.

Personally, I'm hoping that along with the major announcement, Steve Jobs also mentions that the iTunes Music Store for Australia is finally open for business...

Me too - it's long overdue.
(3 replies) #13 MaxMonster on 05 Oct 2005 - 23:19
OMG - so jobs will have to eat his own words? Admit he was wrong? That'll never happen. Interesting to see how they put their traditional "spin" on things. Just like the CPU thing. LOL!
#13.1 vetMonkeyClaw on 06 Oct 2005 - 00:26
lol i seem to remember another quote from another industry leader going something like this

"640K ought to be enough for anybody."

that was good ole bill back int eh eighties. but who cares, when u are wrong u are wrong and jobs has on plenty of occasions been proven as such and admitied his faults without pressure. in the end it doesnt matter and no one but competitor fan boys will ever care.
#13.2 MaxMonster on 06 Oct 2005 - 01:05
Oh, I'm sorry I thought we are talking about jobs and the topic. My mistake.

BTW the 640K comment was in context to the times. Mr. Jobs comment was only a few months ago. Of course, I know its hard for most apple people to see beyond what apple tells them is innovative and worth buying.

Again, sorry for not sticking to the topic.

Part marketing, mainly word of mouth - people really like how the iPod + iTunes work.
#16 ph3412t3h13 on 06 Oct 2005 - 00:18
Apple hold like 4 or 6 percent of the computer market...

and then it controls the mp3 market and then all the MS fanboys are like: OMG ITS THE TOTAL CRAPFEST OF STEVE JOBS!!!!!!!

my god

#19.1 warwagon on 06 Oct 2005 - 22:53
ya I hope they support xvid, but hey probobobly won't

but then again the only people who even know what xvid is, is geeks
#20 MiG:uK on 06 Oct 2005 - 08:26
it will more than likely support .mp4, but i still cant get over how pants the sound quality of the ipod is in comparison with other media players.

Most people dont care but to me if i pay £100+ for a mp3 player its gotta be half decent..
#21 Peter McGrath on 06 Oct 2005 - 09:20
Well they'd better support mpeg's otherwise they may as well just toss their invention in the iriver .

98% of my music video's are .mpg's - the rest are .avi's or .wmv's.

actually .vob's would be nice too - playing a softcopy of my DVDs would be nice

I hope they don't try and use this as a vehicle to push their .mov format.....

iPods are so popular because they play mp3's (not because they play anything else).
(3 replies) #22 So-Unreal on 06 Oct 2005 - 11:26
did you all think about the fact that it may only play quicktime files form the start?
#22.1 Peter McGrath on 06 Oct 2005 - 13:05
I don't think Apple would be that stupid.

Even Sony have given up trying to push their own music format to the detriment of mp3's.

If it only played .mov's they would just sit on the shop shelves gathering dust...
#22.2 tuqueelukee on 06 Oct 2005 - 18:54
Unless Apple were to provide the content themselves.
#22.3 Neomac v6 on 07 Oct 2005 - 02:12
I'm sure when the time is right Apple will start offering video content based on the H.264 codec - firstly vodcasts and music videos and later movies.

iriver has been playing videos for almost a year now. big ****.
#24.1 Bwizzel-B on 06 Oct 2005 - 23:38
Exactly. Ipod has been out for how long, and is still playing catch up? Archos has been doing it for a few years.....

#24.2 Neomac v6 on 07 Oct 2005 - 02:13
Apple puts form and function above features. They could have all the features other plays have, but choose not to.
#24.3 SoulEata on 07 Oct 2005 - 02:43
Then why are they adding video now? Theyre not choosing not too, they have no choice but to copy other players features. If they put function first, it would have played video and had picture capability way before everyone else, but guess what, they didn't.
#24.4 Neomac v6 on 07 Oct 2005 - 21:47
Everyone's talking like the video iPod already exists, when it might never happen.

And by function I meant ease of use.
