Windows XP Gets Some Glass

Stardock has unveiled its first beta of WindowBlinds 5 and with it, glass effects for Windows XP users.

At Microsoft's recent Professional Developer's Conference, the new Windows Vista UI was officially unveiled. Code-named Aero, the new user experience boast a new "glass" user interface in which the title bars and borders are semi-transparent.

The effect on Windows Vista is possible thanks to Microsoft's new advanced 3D desktop compositer which allows the desktop to leverage the latest 3D hardware. It was believed by many (including many at Stardock) that such effects could not be done on Windows XP with any kind of adequate performance.

Stardock claims that beta 1 of WindowBlinds 5 achieves performance on the same level as the current beta of Windows Vista in terms of delivering glass effects. WindowBlinds 5 also is able to deliver glass effects on relatively low-end hardware (though it still requires a video card with at least 32MB of video memory).

Stardock is careful to say that WindowBlinds 5 on Windows XP can only give a "slight taste" of the "cool" things that will be able to be done on Windows Vista.

"It's important to remember that Windows Vista is based on the latest 3D hardware capabilities. The entire desktop -- the entire environment -- is a 3D surface," said Brad Wardell, President of Stardock and also a Neowin.net contributor. "We recommend that our customers migrate to Windows Vista once it becomes generally available. But in the meantime, they can enjoy some of the eye-candy of Windows Vista on Windows XP."

Stardock has indicated that WindowBlinds 5 is significantly faster than previous versions when using the same visual style. In addition, it eliminates the requirement to have a dedicated process or in other words, WindowBlinds 5 runs as a native part of a Windows XP system, there's no additonal process used to manage it.

WindowBlinds 5 is currently only available to users of Object Desktop.

Such as what? What's the last Stardock-related news item you've seen? There was a gadget-related one last month and that was about since last year.

My day job is at Stardock. But regardless of what the source is, Aero glass effects on Windows XP is news -- especially here on Neowin.net where the customization community is a central part of the forums. And I didn't make this news item incidentally.

It's pretty obvious Neowin and Stardock help each other out, so I don't know why members continue to question it. We give them some news publicity and, in turn, we have them give us an IRC, promote and help us with our first podcast (independent ones may be in the works), and give us information from such conventions like PDC. I've bitched about it too and I'm sure Frogboy got pissed about it, but I can assure you now, after talking to people, that it's simply a friendship that helps out both parties. Can we please leave this alone now? Yeah, it'd be nice to see it in software, but it's not that big of a deal. It will be buried come the morning news rush.

Well first off, I didn't make the news item. Secondly, you can easily check what news items I've posted. Heck, I was the one who posted the 3D Studio / Maya news item just before this one. Hardly Stardock related.

I think some people just have an axe to grind. If someone else had made the same program it would still be on the home page but the usual suspects wouldn't be on complaining about it.

If anyone doesn't upgrade simply because they only wanted to transparent window borders and now WB provides them, they should re-evaluate what they are doing using a PC. The eye candy is going to get a lot of attention, but Vista is much more than that.

Beta 1, from the get go, was said to be a small taste of what Vista would be. I have no idea how you can, knowing that, judge the OS already.

If you want Vista glass, I would highly suggest waiting for... Windows Vista

There has been no alpha blended borders in XP ever before. Also, skinners can put in their own reflective layers on the alpha blended border.

The point is the alpha blending now available. Drop shadows can be part of themes now. Also, notice how all old themes, WB and uxtheme alike never have true rounded corners and instead had very jagged edges? Well, this makes that a thing of the past.

Thread cleaned... AGAIN

Calm down people and discuss properly. Getting all riled up and insluting one another isn't productive here
