It seems as though is planning a fairly large "Patch Tuesday" next week. In a bulletin posted to TechNet earlier today, the software giant is expecting to release upwards of 9 patches for Windows including:

"8 Microsoft Security Bulletins affecting Microsoft Windows. The highest Maximum Severity rating for these is Critical. Some of these updates will require a restart. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) and the Enterprise Scanning Tool (EST)."

Microsoft is also planning to release a single patch for Exchange with a severity rating of "Important". In related Microsoft news, a new service article was issued today dealing with performance issues in Windows when running a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 CPU. The hotfix makes "changes to the kernel power manager... helping to calculate an increased target performance state." The patch is slated to be included in the next service pack for XP and as of today, can only be obtained by contacting Microsoft directly.

CHANGELOG:
  • Support for DVD Burning has been added. You can now create a new Zip file on a DVD as well as on a CD. Note: CD/DVD writing is only available on systems with the Windows XP operating system.
  • The Job Wizard "Select Items" feature has been changed. The left pane now only displays folders, instead of folders and files.
  • In the Job Wizard, when you check (or include) a folder in either pane, the contents of that folder are now automatically displayed in the right pane.
  • The "Reuse WinZip window" option is now turned off on installation.
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes and minor enhancements, including:
  • WinZip startup - Certain configurations would cause WinZip to take a long time to boot up. This has been corrected. The delay may still occur when accessing the CD/DVD writing.
  • Job Wizard - "Select Items" no longer shows network shortcuts in either pane. To specifiy a network location, you must use Entire Network.
  • Check for Updates ? did not work with Norton Internet Security, even after granting connection permissions. This has been addressed.

    Jesus, nine??

I do like updates for more security, but some many in a month

I hope vista changes how the windows security platform works..

in my opinion 9 is very low, be glad its not 135 a month.
    #2.2 Express on 07 Oct 2005 - 21:27
Remember there was no update in September. So its nine in two months.
    #2.3 Airlink on 08 Oct 2005 - 14:46
All that means is that they've been saving some of the 9 up over two months instead of releasing them over MU/WU when they were ready.
    Bad Microsoft, bad.

They used to do it weekly and people complained....

What is wrong with that? These are updates for issues Microsoft has found internally and are not known to the hacking community. I would agree that MS should release an update ASAP if there is already a known exploit out there, but that has not been the case.

Question. What's the deal with the "some update will require a restart" I keep seeing everywhere. It's like it's a BIG thing now. Why is having to restart after security installs a big thing now?
    #3.1 that_guru on 07 Oct 2005 - 22:20
Some updates need to replace files that might be in use at the time, so it might need to restart your computer if they are in use.
    #3.2 TheBlazingAngel on 08 Oct 2005 - 04:51
for a server or an entire network, a reboot can be a very big thing
as for anouncing it in the bulletin though, im not sure how necessary that is, unless they want to give a heads up to all the admins out there
    #3.3 Airlink on 08 Oct 2005 - 14:48
If you have to reboot, you have to reboot. There's really no way around it. So, schedual the re-boot when there's already a schedualed down-time for the server in question.
    It's called management skills, OK?

why in the world is it listed as " AMD Dual-Core CPU KB Article" when its about any multiple CPU system, and the article doesn't once mention AMD
    #4.1 vetlardiop on 07 Oct 2005 - 22:05
Several sites, including the one we linked on the front page explain that in detail. It has to do with AMD's Cool n'Quiet technology.
    #4.2 neufuse on 07 Oct 2005 - 22:06
yes, those sites say that but MS's KB article does not explicitly mention AMD at all, it plays it off as a universal Dual core and multi CPU fix
    #4.3 vetlardiop on 07 Oct 2005 - 22:09
AMD's CPU's are the only dual-core chips with the kind of advanced throttle stepping and thermal management that the article was discussing. They dont have to name AMD to mean their products.

Oh, so I can contact MS and they will send me XP SP3?

    Ummm.... no.
    #5.1 vetlardiop on 08 Oct 2005 - 02:49
...or if you call Microsoft and explain your problem and mention the KB number you'll have a chance at obtaining the patch mentioned in the article
    #5.2 cooldude7273 on 08 Oct 2005 - 03:16
I know that, but it sounds like I can call them and get the SP.
    #5.3 parithon on 08 Oct 2005 - 06:28
That sentance in no way said that you would receive XP SP3, it states that the patch can only be obtained by calling MS.

    There... that better?

Hahahaha, may require a restart. How lazy are we?
    #6.1 12Iceman on 08 Oct 2005 - 08:28
"may" is microsofts equivalent of "will".

For example, Microsoft "may" find further security vulnerabilities that need to be patched.

I just tried to update and it's not there. I know it's a Tuesday thing, but if these fixes are so urgent, why are they waiting?
    #7.1 parithon on 08 Oct 2005 - 06:35
In the beginning Microsoft didn't wait, but IT professionals argued that it was too difficult to keep up with an unknown schedule (having to test individual fixes in their unique environment). Microsoft chose to go by a monthly schedule to help.
    #7.2 Airlink on 08 Oct 2005 - 14:51
Yes, at least this way they give us enough advance notice of when the MU/WU/AU updates will hit the 'net.
However, if you really wanna be independent, there are other tools out there for applying the relevent updates. You don't have to rely on MU/WU/AU if you don't want to.
    For example, WinDiz Updates.
