According to Think Secret, Apple will not unveil the widely speculated video iPod that prospective customers have been pining over the last few days. Rather, it will introduce an updated model of the existing iPod with capacities up to 80GB. The new iPod will reportedly be slightly smaller than existing 4th generation designs. The video iPod remains in development, but without a software delivery system for video content in place Apple apparently does not feel the time is right.

Apple will also introduce updated Power Mac and PowerBook models using DDR2. At least one of the new Power Macs will feature IBM's dual core PowerPC 970MP processor, while PowerBooks will see a slight upgrade in the form of a PowerPC 7448 processor.

I wonder how much the new ones will cost and if they're still gonna be white

hmm..dual core..
i am meaning to save for a powerbook (some day), but i don't see the point in a PPC one when the intel ones will be around in 2006.
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by Zenith on 12 Oct 2005 - 08:24
Waiting for the Intels depends on whether you need one now, or whether you can wait until they eventually shift them

I have a powerbook with a bust hinge which would cost more than the value of the machine to fix, so I will probably end up getting the new ones.

Wouldn't owners of the brand new iPod Nano feel their iPod is outdated? I know I would. That's a bitch. Can't they wait some more after releasing a new model, or is Apple turning Microsoft-like ?
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by BBinder on 08 Oct 2005 - 20:17
so apple is turning stuff out like microsoft

if i recall microsoft releases new stuff after a certain number of years

apple on the other hands brings out new stuff near enough everyday making people feel like they are outdated and need to get back into time buy spending more and more money on apple's products

microsoft is no where like this

Of course not. The markets for the iPod Nano and the regular iPod are completely different. I think the Nano is cool, but the 2GB and 4GB sizes are aimed at either former Mini users who don't have that much music or at people looking for a small, second iPod. I've been waiting for the 5G to upgrade to from the 3G I've had for a few years.

Apple knows what they're doing.
Quote this comment #6.3 Posted by sebaz on 09 Oct 2005 - 00:45
Please guys, remember that Apple is a hardware company for the most part. Microsoft is software. Comparing the products they launch, and when they do it and all that is plainly stupid.

The average cycle is 6 to 9 months, sometimes longer. Usually people complain that they don't do more frequent, more incremental upgrades... but whatever, we all live in our own world. Yours is jsut further from reality.

Okay... so the red curtain in the invites symbolised what exactly? Doesn't add up.

"without the agreements nor infrastructure in place to deliver movies to customers through a store-like interface, Apple sees little value in releasing such an iPod at this time"

The fact there was no agreements/infrastructure in place to deliver audio didn't seem to stop them releasing the first gen iPod.

I guess the main issue could be how to *legally* convert your DVD to a format which is supported by the video iPod. You'd have to break the CSS .. illegal?

Jesus, get over youselves already (Apple).

Releasing a "new" iPod every couple of months is garbage. Everyone wants the video capabilities, I have seen very few people complain about space on a 20 or 40gig iPod.

Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by Jstphish on 09 Oct 2005 - 01:23
If they upgrade the capacity and keep the price points (20GB->40GB and 40GB->80GB) then why complain? ... of course this is speculation.

Of course if they released iPods only every year or year and a half people would complain about that. Funny thing is they don't care because people continue to buy their products. Personally, I'd rather have them coming out with new ones frequently because each generation gets better and people have more of a choice of when to buy one.

I think that they are going to release the new 5g ipods, but, without the video playback software, and later release the software for video, i believe it will look similar to the nano, and come in black and white colors, they will have that imac/nano sort of transparent border around them as well.. i mean, they say "The new iPod will reportedly be slightly smaller than existing 4th generation designs.".. they said the same thing about the "new ipod mini's" (ipod nano) before it came out.. so this is all my own speculation, but it just seems what will happen, concidering the past releases from apple..

The rumors are going on about computer updates and new iPods, which doesn't seem to be too great a reason to hold a whole announcement session about.

I have a feeling the "one more thing (tm)" is going to be something completely new, like the previously rumored "Asteroid"

wow 80GB super and it does everything your old 60GB one did but you have to buy this one.

this really ticks me off because i want to buy a new ipod but i don't want to spend all that money for something that does almost the same thing as my mini.
Quote this comment #14.1 Posted by Jstphish on 09 Oct 2005 - 01:36

Yes, everyone who bought a 60GB iPod are being led at the end of an electrified cattle prod to the store to buy 80GB ones.

...and you'd do well to buy a clue... at the end of a cattle prod or not.

80GB is a LOT of music. I can see 80GB comming in handy if it also played video but 80GB of music...thats about 38 days worth of music.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #17 Posted by fergiej on 08 Oct 2005 - 21:40
Why does it have to be just music? Don't forget, you can use this thing as a portable hdd as well. I often use my 40GB 4g as a means to get files back and forth from work, friends, etc.

I have about 13GB of music and off and on as much as 3-4GB of audible content. THe rest is hdd space for me.

Here we go, release a new iPod and act as if the previous models never existed.

I hate when they do this.

They need to explain why the nano has more features than the regular iPod.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #24 Posted by blueshirt on 09 Oct 2005 - 04:47
Apple needs to update the firmware of older iPods so that they will have the same features with the nano.

Well it's that time of the year again when I go to eBay and sell my months year old iPod.

P.S. Does Apple have an iPod recycling facility?
Quote this comment #24.1 Posted by Galley on 09 Oct 2005 - 08:58

Quote this comment Reply to this comment #25 Posted by Smigit on 09 Oct 2005 - 05:49
I think the report is wrong personally. Arent the "One more thing" releases supposed to be BIG releases. An 80gig drive upgrade isnt what I would call a monumental release at all, infact its hardly noteworthy since most people have no use for anywhere near that much music/files.

If this is true though I'm sure there must be a second announcement that will coincide wit hthe iPod release even if it's not iPod related itself. The conference seems like too big a deal to be over a 20gig HD increase.

Perhaps if video isnt being added something else is. What that would be I duno (and I still think video is highly likely)

Quote this comment #28.1 Posted by Magallanes on 10 Oct 2005 - 23:40
Apple said that more gigas means more funny, a lossless format will sound better that a mp3 (even with a cheap speakers) and a just-plain-and-white design is cool .... and a lot of people buy it because they think that Apple was right..

In the future, apple will say "we created a new music format, not only you cannot loss quality, also you GAIN quality.. with this new format, the music sound better that original.. sadly any song will be 1gb.... anyways, you can buy us a 1terabyte ipod and come with fancy colors"

Quote this comment Reply to this comment #29 Posted by niktheguru on 09 Oct 2005 - 22:10
maybe the curtain could mean new display monitors from apple?? (ok, a mega long shot!! lol)

I'm guessing that the new 5G ipod will be much smaller (hence why it is such a big release....not video though) If they can squeeze the nano to such sizes i'm sure they can do something with the 5G ipod. i'm sure as hell gonna replace my 3G ipod, only if its a significant release though....and 80gig capacity would be welcomed in my opinion!!
