If Apple's announcements later today don't amuse, this certainly will. Take one recently released iPod Nano; add 200Gb hard disk (plus a little hardware hacking) and what does one get? The biggest (literally) media player on the planet.

"The iPod Nano is a great testament to clean engineering, design, and efficiency in a portable device. However, Apple failed to consider that the available storage capacity is very small! UncycloMedia Commons has released this guide to installing additional storage on your iPod Nano brand device. It might be a good idea to set aside a good two to three hours to installing this addon, but it's pretty easy to perform, as long as you know what you're doing."

The website details the procedure of removing the memory units on the nano, and attaching a ATA adaptor in their place. With a powerful boast of being able to hold '150,000 minutes of music', you'll be the talk of the town - that is - for the six seconds the unit is now able to run for.

Quite possibly the wackiest, and coolest hack, we've ever seen - if it is real, that is. Stay tuned for more Apple news later today!

Update - we'll have coverage on the Apple conference today coming soon; the above, yes, appears to be fake.

View: Photo of iPod Nano (mirror) | Details of the hack

Version 3.51
Bugs fixed:
  • Fixed two vulnerabilities, which could be exploited with specially crafted ACE and UUE/XXE archives;
  • Previous version did not delete some of temporary files;
  • WinRAR could crash when processing very long (more than 1024 characters) archive name parameter in the command line.

is it me or does "ipod_nano_hack.jpg" look photoshopped?
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by Zero1 on 12 Oct 2005 - 15:57
The picture looks VERY fake, and it seems to have been edited with Photoshop CS2 (according to tag info).

I dont know if that page on uncyclopedia is the same one that I saw the other day (it wont load for me) but if it is this is 100% fake... the photos on the one I saw were taken off the nano stress test article posted on the forums not long ago.

Check in one of the images of the article if it loads where it shows the connector and look at the red wires...

yes, definitly does, in fact i think thats an official apple picture of the nano...

yer id agree there.... i saw this on the forum ages ago but i thought it was fake or a joke
Quote this comment #6.4 Posted by sphbecker on 12 Oct 2005 - 16:29
I actually think the picture looks real; that is to say that he took a picture of a nano strapped to a hard drive with a few wires which you conveniently cannot see.

I would say this is fake because it looks like the nano is powering the hard drive; which would not be possible with the little battery inside a nano. Also, all you can see are 4 power cables there don't seem to be any single cables connecting the nano to the hard drive.

I've had this argument in other forums and I might as well bring it here as well. The photo is a fake. The blog that had the directions on doing this started out with a black iPod Nano, then suddenly it became a white Nano. Not only that, but if you read any magazines that are currently running Nano ads, you'll notice that the song on the Nano in the ads is the exact same song on this Nano, including the time marker and the track number. And to add further proof that this is BS, the original article claims that the drive saps the battery instantly and can only get in a couple minutes of playtime before it dies, but as you can see by the photo, the song has been playing for around 3 minutes and the battery indicator is still full. TOTAL BS!!!

Why has this made front page news when it is obviously a fake. And so badly done too.
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by DrunkenMaster on 12 Oct 2005 - 16:05
I think its quite funny. Holding it together with some elastics and such. Defeats the whole purpose of portable music. Maybe its also poking fun at the idea that 40 GB or 80 Gb iPods aren't big enough.... so what's next.

What's even funnier is that this has been posted on other site like Gizmodo and the life for over a week and a half now and proven to be fake on those sites. So no offense to Neowin here, but you're a little behind on this fake news.

It isn't fake, I just ordered two from newegg, they are offering it in the ipod nano SLI extreme GT super XL. You can link up two nano's and one nano plays half of the track then the other nano plays the second half.

Pretty stupid if you ask me. It may be a 200GB mp3 player, but it's not portable and it's pretty useless. I'd prefer a 200GB drive with Windows XP and Winamp.

Why was this article not checked before it was posted

http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Just look at the front page and its easy to see the site is used for posting humorous articles.

Or even http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Uncyclopedia:About

"Uncyclopedia is intended to be a Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/) parody. Although the main focus of this site is to provide humorous content, newcomers' chances of finding such material of any worth are unlikely."

They should have added a 15inch LCD monitor. it would be easier on the eyes and it would still be impossibly small.

I woud even go on as to add a recent motherboard with the latest graphic card... etc. Now that would be hot! Pop in a large capacity Lion battery and we are in business. Although the 6 minutes duration with the original battery is not too bad. I would presume it would go down to 2 seconds duration with all the extra added!

But still that would be a whole 2 seconds of extreme portable entertainment that I would fully enjoy!

good god... i can't believe everyone is either taking this seriously or going nuts over the fact that this might be a fake.

as if walking around with a 3.5" harddrive in your pocket that plays for 6 seconds is something you'd seriously consider?

get a sense of humour guys.
