The latest build of Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista operating system has been released to testers on Microsoft Connect today. The 5231 build was leaked earlier this month (5231.winmain.050912.2020), although this build is slightly newer (5231.winmain_idx03.051004-2120). In this new pre beta 2 build, Windows Media Player has been updated to version 11 and new audio controls have been added (with active input and output monitors).

Some testers have been experiencing download problems on Microsoft Connect. The error displayed is:

The system has encountered an unexpected error. We apologize for the inconvenience. The issue will be addressed as quickly as possible.

Although other testers are reportedly downloading without any issues. Click Read More to view further details on the ISO.

Neato, but the Who don't have a song called "Teenage Wasteland"--it's "Baba O'Riley".

These are not the right screenshots. Check the build number on Connect, they're different.

The partial build tag for this release is "Windows Vista Build 5231.051004-2120".

This should NOT be the same build that was leaked. Please fix the article, and the above commentor who said that these screenshots are NOT from the CTP build was correct.

is still very buggy
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by raskren on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:28
is still very beta
Quote this comment #8.2 Posted by Hurmoth on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:29
Well it is after all still beta, but it does seem to run much faster!
Quote this comment #8.3 Posted by todd on 17 Oct 2005 - 18:48
Instead of using "it's a beta" as an excuse for the number of bugs, I think a better idea would be to report the bugs to Microsoft. They can't fix problems they don't know about.

Does anyone know if this will be released to MSDN subscribers?

Yes it is out right now. http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/ (2930.7MB)

I'm about a gig into the 2.9gb download...but for the first time with this build CD images are available (3 CDs). I'll be downloading that later so I can test the CD install.

link ?
Quote this comment #10.2 Posted by M118LR on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:17
You have to be a registered Beta tester to be able to log onto Connect to be able to download. There is no link.

Change the screenshots, they're wrong. This build is different....

This was out on MS Connect last Wednesday
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by Chimera on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:21
Um, no it wasn't. I'm sure there are hundreds of neowin users who check Connect at least once per day to see what's new, file bug reports (this is a beta test, after all) etc. I know I do...
Quote this comment #12.2 Posted by DaveLegg on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:30
Well, I did download it from there starting Wednesday, finished it on friday night and spent saturday installing it. Ask the guys on IRC. I kept them informed of the status. It was definately out then.

EDIT: I just checked, it appears they have now released CD versions. The one I d/led was called something like IDW release build or something, and it was a dvd version

Well you must have a special account that no-one else has, or how else do you explain that this is current news on all tech sites today? I'm not saying you're lying, just lucky
Quote this comment #12.4 Posted by DaveLegg on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:46
008 Windows Longhorn NAP TAP is what it says under program name.

Maybe I do have a special account then
Quote this comment #12.5 Posted by xxdesmus on 17 Oct 2005 - 18:26
IDW release build means you're getting internal builds...lol..i wonder if they may have added you to an account group you're not supposed to be part of

Hey, you won't see me complaining
Quote this comment #12.7 Posted by threedaysdwn on 17 Oct 2005 - 23:02
Sounds like DaveLegg works at a company that's in the TAP program.

When are they going to change that dark, depressing taskbar?
Quote this comment #13.1 Posted by Totenmaske on 17 Oct 2005 - 17:33
I actually like the dark taskbar - especially since it semi transparent.

The build string is 5231.winmain_idx02.051004-2120 the screenshots do not reflect this.
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by M118LR on 17 Oct 2005 - 19:14
On the WinSuperSite Paul has posted some screenshots of this build but you can clearly see the idx is 03 not 02 as listed here. Does anyone know why the difference ?

I WANT TO BE A TESTER, SOMEONE ILLEGALLY UPLOAD IT ON A WEB SERVER/FTP SERVER AND PM ME THE ADDRESS

Just kidding just kidding. But really... I wanna be a tester, I have no life so I'd be great at it. This isn't fair. Neowin shouldn't put this as news it makes me sad

I haven't ever seen Vista in action but from the screenies, I am not liking the glass effect. I know you'll be able to turn it off but still, it looks like it will interfere with title bar headings.

Media player is looking pretty much the same apart from the iTunes buttons

I'd like to moan some more but there are not enough screenshots.

Having said all that I'll probably love it the day I finally switch to it. I went through this moaning process with XP when I was using 2K. I think its natural.

This is beta, but it needs some serious work. I've already had the BSOD and explorer keeps crashing . However, some REALLY neat stuff (like to new sound control etc) .

The official screenshots have been posted at NextL3vel. They are definitely worth a look! (Note: These screenshots are OFFICIAL, unlike the ones leaked earlier last week.)

Sorry, no sidebar in this build. It looks like you can't install the cracked sidebar, either. Hopefully we can look for it in the next build.
