Samsung has announced a mobile phone with 3GB storage capacity, a huge leap from the average 100MB of memory in most mobile phones. The Samsung SPH-V7900 could also function as a portable storage device for computers, the company said.

The phone also features two cameras, one of which is 2-megapixel, two screens, video playback, MP3 playback, dual speakers, and Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF support, all in a twist flip format. Samsung states the battery life to be around 4.5 hours of talk and 200 hours standby.

Price figures and a US market launch date are not yet available.

Nice!
When I ever need a new phone, this will probably be a contender. What'll the price be like though?

What happens if you break the top bit of?
#2.2 domgrimm on 18 Oct 2005 - 08:02
I'd say you get it replaced...it's usually a good idea to take care of your possessions

Kinda reminds me of that new Nokia phone coming out. Samsung make great phones. I've always liked them. It does look rather bulky though, but I guess that's expected with so many features

This is sweet. I could use one of em (my mp3 player just broke), but theyre quite priecy. Either this or the Nokia N91 (Plays more formats, 4GB).

Now i just need to know a price, etc...
#4 olavinto on 17 Oct 2005 - 18:53
In Finland Nokia's N91 costs about 1200 euros and I'm pretty sure this will be about the same class. I have already ordered N91 - I decided to take a chance and return to Nokia after several years. The N-series is finally something that I've been expexting from them. N91 is still far away in Q1 of 2006 though so I might end up getting this one as an old Samsung owner before it...

does sound good, but look ugly, i think.
#6 Nautica on 17 Oct 2005 - 19:26
the main screen is TINY... I have a 4 year old audiovox that has a bigger screen then that, and I got it for free... I wouldnt pay a thing for that phone...
#7 Ianmac45 on 17 Oct 2005 - 20:08
wow
#8 Apollo on 17 Oct 2005 - 20:14
i'd buy the SE w900 over this any day.
#9 shaywood on 17 Oct 2005 - 20:17
@ Nautica - Thats the beauty of contract phones you dont have to pay for em So im gonna agree, i wouldnt pay a thing for that or any other phone

Sony Ericsson today announced their W900...taking the form factor of the S700, in 3G form with a 2megapixel camera, it has 470MB internal storage, expandable up to 4GB by way of Memory Stick Pro Duo...

it's a 2 megapixel camera actually
#10.2 matthewf01 on 17 Oct 2005 - 20:37
oops typo sorry, thanks for the catch.

Yea, im actually pretty disappointed. As an S700 user since last October, Ive been impatiently awaiting Sakura... the W900 is clearly not the true successor to S700 though, because it is ver obviously not an imaging-class device... the two previous top SE models (K750 and W800) are also 2mp...so big whoop.
Not sure if I should move on to a K750, or hold out a few more months for another announcement, of an eventual 3.2mp cam model..

imo W900 is much better SPH-V7900 in terms of design and specifications. But im not getting any of them,, ill go for P990
#11 stezo2k on 17 Oct 2005 - 20:37
damn that sounds like a hell of a phone

That all sounds nice and all but I have two questions. How much? and How is the reception?

All those other "features" mean nothing to me.

Here what matters to me:
-Batterylife
-Bluetooth support
-sync support using industry standard address and calendar formats.
-Reception

A phone should concentrate on being a "phone".

If I want a camera, I'll get a 9 Megapixel camera.

You raise good points. Many converged (phone and PDA) devices often suffer from substandard phone reception, but everything in life is a tradeoff. Otherwise folks who haven't yet converged phones, PDA's, cameras, pagers, web browser, portable multimedia players, calculators, and pen and paper, look like Batman sporting a utility belt.

I'm the proud owner of a Samsung SPH-i700, but I realize that none of the features provided by the device are 'best in class' when compared to separate components.
#12.2 aristotle-dude on 17 Oct 2005 - 21:37
I tried using my current phone as a calculator and I found that it was much slower than using a pen and paper to figure it out myself.

Part of the problem was the poor UI it sports for a simple function like a calculator.

Actually the Treo 6xx series and the PPC-6600 and 6700 (iMate Jam series, etc) which are all made by HTC, have extremely good phone reception.
#13 timmmay on 17 Oct 2005 - 22:21
sounds good

what about the phone with a 4gb hard drive they released last year in korea? that one had tv out and everything (the phone is on engadget.com)

How does this compare to a MotoRazor V3??
#14.1 willvg on 17 Oct 2005 - 22:45
it doesnt, the V3 i think has a vga camera which is 640x480. Samsung also usually includes a flashligh on the phone. The V3 has tiny storage. I just want to know how much this will cost
#15 Andre on 17 Oct 2005 - 22:56
damn thats ugly!
(1 reply) #16 MNS on 17 Oct 2005 - 23:34
Samsung phones have always been butt-ugly to me. in contrast to the Ericsson ones, which always sport sexy, sleek and minimal lines. i love the W900, it's the best smartphone design i've seen so far. if i had cash to burn, that would be my next investment.
#16.1 j0j081 on 18 Oct 2005 - 00:18
Sony helps design some of the Ericsson ones but yeah, these phones are getting pretty crazy. I'd almost rather buy that over a new laptop.
#17 raduking on 18 Oct 2005 - 02:06
I'm pretty happy with my Nokia 6670

On a side note, that girl needs to do something about her teeth

Why don't you post a shot of your face for critique?
#18.3 The Cub on 18 Oct 2005 - 15:40

Blah... My next phone?? Thinner than the Razr. Screw these tick phones.
#20.1 anom on 18 Oct 2005 - 13:18
Razr might be thin, but the other dimensions more than make up for it.
#21 N_B on 18 Oct 2005 - 07:38
Looks rather big to me.
#22 TheReaperMan on 18 Oct 2005 - 08:03

I will never understand why phones are getting more and more like computers and less and less like phones. I swear, I don't want to talk into my PDA... just give me a small phone. Razr perhaps? Too bad they don't have 'em for Verizon...
