In what has been a flurry of announcements today from Apple, a few rumoured additions to the Mac family have been added, along with some nice surprises too. Today, touted as the pro consumer update day, saw the introduction of Apple’s first pro photo editing software, aimed towards professional photographers. Included in Aperture is the ability to work directly on RAW images, which will excite photographers who have, until now, been put off from using RAW because of its incompatibility with photo processing programmes.

Apple have also upgraded their ‘power’ family, with the introduction of the Powermac G5 Quad, and Duo. The mid and low end Power Macs have just one dual core processor, but the high end ones have two. According to Apple, the increase in power is worth upgrading, with Final Cut Pro rendering cut by as much as 60%. Also included are DDR2 Ram modules, and PCI Express graphics ports.

The Powerbook range has also been changed, with the introduction of higher resolution displays in the 15” and 17” models. The 12” model remains unchanged, apart from a price drop. New Powerbooks are said to have a 46% brighter screen than previous models. Apart from the screen, the laptops now make use of DDR2 technology, and have an improved battery life of up to 5.5 hours.

Im going to get the intel based macs when they come out

or put tiger on my wintel box for sure.. this is what I need as a pro photographer

Mac OS won't work on a Wintel box. The chipset is incompatible, not to mention the processor.
#2.2 Cubiz on 21 Oct 2005 - 07:52
OS X does work on Wintel boxes but it's illegal.

OS X does work on Wintel boxes, but it's illegal . . . for now.

I('m sure that a hacked OS X will appear once the new Intel-based Macs are out.

However, unless Apple releases OS X for the PC completely, I don't see Apple's computer business going much further. But that's just my opinion.
#2.4 Sticktron on 21 Oct 2005 - 13:02
So you're a pro photographer, eh? And you *need* OSX on your Wintel?
Why, so you can run Photoshop?
#2.5 Staind on 21 Oct 2005 - 14:17
Not Photoshop, it's Aperture.
#2.6 Syphonic on 21 Oct 2005 - 14:46
If you think software makes a photographer you've got some learning to do...

You don't 'need' 'Aperture' and you don't even need to shoot RAW.

That has to be some of the silliest reasoning I've ever heard. How would selling copies of their OS on everyone else's computers HELP their computer business? If anything, it would hurt it, as evidenced by the Mac clone fiasco back in the early 90's.
#2.8 LTD on 21 Oct 2005 - 15:32
Actaully, OS X on both PCs and Macs will be hugely profitable. Apple's hardware will always sell itself, if for no other reason than looks and style alone. Why else would anyone waste money on iPods.

By far Apple's biggest mistake has been in not opening the Mac's architecture to other developers. It actually did do this for a short time but then reversed its decision when it found that other companies could make and sell perfectly good Mac clones at a much lower price. Rather than work with these people, Apple peremptorily withdrew its licensing from the clone makers to ensure that only Apple could make Macintoshes. It's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.

And a dozen years ago, Apple also walked away, at the 11th hour, from discussions with IBM about merging. It would have created a PC powerhouse, and the deal was all but done. Apple and IBM senior executives met at a hotel near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport in October 1994 to thrash out the final details. At the last minute, Apple's CEO Michael Spindler demanded more money, and the IBM reps walked away.

It isn't Apple's products that are the problem. It's company management. This is why Apple today is at 4% marketshare and not 94%.

But there's always hope. Apple's capable of some nice surprises, I'll grant that.

No, it's called waking up and realizing that by continuing to allow clones, they were killing their own sales.

How on earth do you figure that working with the clone makers could possibly have helped Apple? These people were taking money out of Apple's pocket, plain and simple. The only money that Apple got from a clone was the money they recieved from licensing the OS. That was only a tiny fraction of the money they got from the sales of their own computers.

As for Michael Spindler, that guy was an idiot and was singlehandedly responsible for the near destruction of Apple (such as the clone fiasco). You certainly can't blame things that he did on the current management.

some very good stuff... it's about time that they release some real photo editing software.... Next, I hope that they release a really good MS Office comparable office suite.

5.5 hours of battery is definately much more than I can get now...

I've got a bad feeling about these dual-dual cores, i.e., power consumption and heat issues.

Anyway, how do AMD's dual-core technology/offerings compare? What are their plans?

the 12" Powerbook had a price drop?
#5.1 kirk26 on 21 Oct 2005 - 14:02
Yea, they went down from "Really Expensive" to "Expensive".
#5.2 Lord Dufus on 21 Oct 2005 - 14:31
Seriously though... it doesn't look like they have to me... I thought the 12" was always 1499...
#6 Rudy on 21 Oct 2005 - 02:00
i would rather have the old dual 2.0 compared to the new one.....

Next week's headlines: New quad G5 running virtual PC out-performs real PC.
#7.1 blu3Fusion on 21 Oct 2005 - 04:46
LOL
#7.2 sundayx on 21 Oct 2005 - 05:39
isnt that a true statement? 4 logical processors running virtual pc.
#7.3 matt74441 on 21 Oct 2005 - 05:46
I wouldn't be surprised.
#7.4 Danrarbc641 on 21 Oct 2005 - 08:03
It'd have to be pretty damn fast to beat an Athlon 64 X2 system...

apple are introducing things every few weeks now- getting a bit rediculous. small tiny updates- but its always nice to see price drops.
#8.1 Cubiz on 21 Oct 2005 - 07:56
They're just making their current products more appealing; this new-things-every-week trend won't continue forever.
#8.2 bucko on 21 Oct 2005 - 12:55
No, there just getting ready the for Christmas season.

Aperture looks amazing, but then again it's $500.
#9.1 Sticktron on 21 Oct 2005 - 13:04
$500? Who will buy this when they can get Photoshop for $599?

Edit: my bad, seems this is a companion to Photoshop, not a replacement.
As someone else cleverly put it, as Photoshop replaces the darkroom, Aperture replaces the light table.

Then again Capture One PRO which is probably is the most popular RAW workflow tool amongst pro photographers at the moment is $600 and so far, Aperture is shaping up to be better.
#9.3 Daffy_Duck on 21 Oct 2005 - 16:03
I've used Capture One (C1) quite a bit and have come to prefer Adobe's RAW conversion especially after the recent upgrade. Aperture does look like an improvement over C1. It looks pretty nice. We'll just have to see how the conversions look. Too bad I don't have a Mac.

The 12" is unchanged? Untrue. 80GB or 100GB hard drives, instead of the old 60 and 80.

The PowerBook G4 offers 5400-rpm drives standard across the line: 80GB on 12- and 15-inch models and 120GB on 17-inch models.

Check it out.
#10.1 Lord Dufus on 21 Oct 2005 - 16:20
Yeah... I did notice that. I just wish it had the option for the 7200rpm harddrive as well
