According to Mercury Research, a company specializing in PC component market research, Advanced Micro Devices has surpassed 20 percent of the desktop PC market share for the first time since 2001. AMD came in with 20.4 percent of the worldwide desktop PC market share in the third quarter report for this year. Intel still holds a commanding lead at 77.5 percent.

In related news, after introducing its Turion 64 notebook platform this August, shipments of AMD notebook processors are up 55% for this quarter.

Intel holds 80.8 percent of the global CPU market, which includes both desktops and notebooks, followed by AMD with 17.8 percent. Intel's share slid 1.4 percentage points while AMD enjoyed an increase of 1.6 percent overall.

Known Issues:

Some of the settings for both D3D & OGL will not be synchronized between ATT and the normal ATI CP, you must only use one of them to make changes, the best option is to use ATT since the ATI CP does not support changes to AI and in order to use the advanced D3D/OGL features. Changes made in ATT will work on games and such but the changes will not be reflected in the normal ATI CP since ATI stores the registry values that the CP reads separate from the actual values in the registry.

Note: Since these drivers include a non-standard version of ATT, I would recommend that if you have any previous version of ATT installed, please uninstall it before installing these drivers, not doing so may cause unknown problems.

Can you imagine where we'd be if AMD wasn't always resetting the standard for Intel to meet.
GO AMD!

Go AMD Go. Your processors are cheaper, faster and better, and they can make a 64 bits platforms that stands up and works.

Even though some could argue that Intel CPUs are easier to use.

i thought amd would have a larger share in the market place- but when you count in business' i.e. dell / xeon servers etc intel have the upper hand.

there are more and more AMD based retail systems out there now for the standard home comsumer than there ever was- so this percentage is most likely to grow with the introduction of the 1206/7 socket next year

AMD is still the best 64-bit consumer solution out there.

All brought to you by the mighty Athlon.

*bows* All hail the Athlon!

Interesting that this news came out around the same time that Intel announced a bunch of delays; definitely a good week so far for AMD

I don't know how awesome a point this is... I heard laptop sales are now surpassing desktop sales... and doesn't intel reign supreme in the laptop market? (pentium m/centrino)

AMD I once hated and despised you, but now that you beat Intel at their own game...ALL HAIL! ALL HAIL!

This is excellent news, AMD finally benefitting from Intel's hanging onto the P4 architecture. Things will get interesting once Intel's Dothan successor(s) hit the desktop and AMD responds with M2

I doubt it, shouldn't this be RETAIL market?

I swear allegiance to no piece of silicon. When I need to upgrade I'll buy from whichever company offers me the best deal at that time, and I don't care which company it is. Arguing over stuff like this is like arguing over who makes the best toaster. I can just see the fanboys now, fighting over Hamilton Beach and Toastmaster. It's just a microprocessor people, sheesh.

Good for AMD. I've never used a Pentium-based desktop in my life, and by the way this is going, chances are that won't change for a while.
