Microsoft have launched their "live" initiative today.

Formed from the start.com technologies, Windows Live will include many of Microsoft's beta web technologies - Windows Live Mail (new Hotmail UI), Windows Live Saftey Center, Windows Live Favorites, Windows Live Messenger, and Windows OneCare Live. Live.com serves as the personalized starting point for Windows Live services, powered by technologies such as RSS and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX).

The company today also previewed Office Live, a new set of Internet-based services for growing and managing a business online. The initial Office Live offerings are targeted at the approximately 28 million small businesses worldwide that have fewer than 10 employees. These services can be used independently but also integrate with Microsoft Office programs used regularly by more than 400 million people around the world, including Microsoft Outlook®, Microsoft Excel®, Microsoft Office Live Meeting and Microsoft Office Small Business Edition. Over time, the scope of Office Live services will expand.

Office Live is due to beta at the beginning of 2006

Wow @ the Windows Live website when visiting with Firefox.. They actually used .. a smiley! zOmg!

Anyway, when I watch start.com, microsoftgadgets.com, those live websites, .. It's their intention to somehow connect all those sites. But oh my are they so not succeeding?
I know where they are going with this.. It all looks very googlish to me. Don't get me wrong, I like this move from Microsoft, but currently, it's terribly chaotic.

Google one site, and on that site, a pile of subdomains, redirecting you to where ever you really need to go. Their sitemap is christal clear, etc etc. I think I discover a new Microsoft website every now and then.
If they want to make this userfriendly, please let them structurize their websites a bit

Is this an attempt to rebrand msn?
Quote this comment #5.1 Posted by Porp on 01 Nov 2005 - 20:33
thats my question too..
Quote this comment #5.2 Posted by fairlie on 01 Nov 2005 - 20:38
It does seem that way; LiveMessenger and LiveMail - giving Live msn's best products would be death to MSN anyway really so I think it is.

im wondering now, what we will call Messenger? Just Messenger or LiveMessenger (doesnt slip off the tongue... alot of my friends call it just msn)... or Live?

"Do you got Live? whats your email?" lol.. i can see it now

a bit sad to see MSN go, but oh well

Read this official blog post, it explains the MSN side of things quite well.

MSN will continue to exist.

The way I see it (personally) is this: MSN started as an online service. Then it grew into a content provider and a web portal. It developed some services on the side, like Hotmail and Messenger. At some point, MSN got stretched away from its original goals into something else. Part of this was because of the competition. Partly it's because a lot of people who worked on Hailstorm and other projects had no where else to go.

Now, that part of MSN is being seperated. MSN will go back to its roots and focus on content, the MSN.com portal, and MSN Search.

Windows Live will focus on services, and applications that extend those services and the Windows experience. Fitting Messenger into Windows Live will make more sense after you see what's coming in the next few months.

But Windows Live isn't just a rebranding of those services and products. It's going to go way beyond that. And it's going to be the nimble, agile arm of Microsoft going forward.

At least that's my view. I'm sure others see it differently.

From the Windows Live Messenger blog:

MSN will morph into two brands, Windows Live and MSN.
After a few successful years, the creators of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer split the cast and concept in half and created a new and almost equally successful show, Angel. Buffy focused on the human experience, while Angel catered to the sci-fi-action-loving crowd. Think of MSN like Buffy and Windows Live like the Angel spin-off: same people and same missions, but divided in the interest of better focus. MSN now means content, like MSN.com and MSNBC. While Windows Live means services like Live.com, Mail, and of course, Instant Messaging.

Has anyone else noticed a resemblance between Live.com and the personalised google homepage?
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by threedaysdwn on 01 Nov 2005 - 21:07
How so?

Live.com is based on Start.com

If anything, Google's personalized homepage looks like Start.
Quote this comment #7.2 Posted by Jeremy1 on 02 Nov 2005 - 01:15
There is definitely a resemblance. Live.com looks like Start.com, which was ripped off by Google.

Where is the start menu?
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by creamhackered on 01 Nov 2005 - 21:49
lower left hand side of the screen.

This isn't an online version of Windows.

This rebranding might confuse some people. Baaaaad move, although its a good idea they should have just added to start.com

Hm, I'm a bit weary of all this "Live" stuff. Sounds like a gimick to me. Just call the damn things by their version numbers for heavens sake.

What do you mean? The version numbers still exist.

ie. MSN Messenger 8.0 will now be called Windows Live Messenger 8.0
Quote this comment #10.2 Posted by Max™ on 01 Nov 2005 - 23:33
Yeah but it sounds cheap. MSN Messenger 8 does fine. Why mess around with this "Live" branding?
Quote this comment #10.3 Posted by threedaysdwn on 02 Nov 2005 - 00:56
Because MSN was getting away from its roots.

While MSN and Windows Live share business models to some extent (ie. Ad-based revenue and subscriptions), our goals and practices are quite a bit different.

MSN is about the MSN.com portal, web search, and content.

Windows Live is about services and applications that integrate those services.

At least they are trying to divide "Live" and "msn" into two brands.
One for news, one for communication.

The whole Start.com and all these other sites confuse the hell out of me.

It actually makes sense calling their internet services live, now with Xbox live, being the internet services for the Xbox and Windows Live being the internet services for Windows.

Well I am proberly going to be shot for this, but I really like this 'Live' branding idea from Microsoft, and from looking at live.com - it may oneday replace my google homepage.

Wow.. I really kinda like this live.com..
Changed my IE home page to it :p (Will consider it for fox whenever it's compatible)
These new Microsoft sites are really kinda cool.. Wallop and this, in particular..

Well I was confused for a moment when I clicked into live.com and all I saw was a search box. Several minutes later I refresh and I see all the other stuff. Huh...
