Google is offering webmasters full-featured, powerful analytics package from Urchin to determine how many people are visiting their sites, to view the source of referrals to your site and what they're clicking on. In March, Google acquired Urchin Software and promptly lowered the monthly cost of the company's hosted Web analytics service, Urchin On Demand, from $495 to $199. Today, the search company is re-branding Urchin under the name Google Analytics and making it available to everyone for free.

Google Analytics has been updated to integrate with Google AdWords. It also includes new summary views of traffic and trends, pre-formatted for executives, marketers, and webmasters.

Google is having some serious power viewing what goes on with the web. Now they can track individual websites. Don't forget nothing is free. Google has monkeys on the other end sorting out all the data they will be getting!

Yeah but if you're that concerned you wouldn't be using the Internet, or posting stuff to a website that anyone in the world could get to.

Now they do? FWIW, they've already had this ability... this just increases the number of sites.

It is so hard not to love Google. They keep buying companies that charge for software, then they make it 2x's better, then give it to everyone for free (Web tools, Google Earth, Picasa2, etc.). How can you not love this?

cause thats communism

<sarcasm>Yea, that makes sense since Google runs the government and everything.</sarcasm>
Besides, they are not forcing anything on us, just really trying to make as much information as possible available to the masses for free.
Quote this comment #5.3 Posted by Smigit on 14 Nov 2005 - 16:14
By pushing out dozens of services they are trying to capture the market, beat out the opposition and thus put us in a position where we are required to use their services. You cant avoid google if you want to, especially now that websites will be collecting onformation on your visits to them, theres really no choice (and yeah, webmasters could collect data since the dawn of time but it has always stayed with the webmaster).

Besides their goal isnt to make information easier to access, they are there to drive a profit. all that other nonesence is airy fairy sprinkles and sugar coating on what google is really about

All this putting stuff for free is starting to concern me. If google just keeps aquiring stuff and making it free and supported only by their advertising, they're going to put a lot of small companies that depend on service fees out of business. that's going to cost people jobs, and that's NOT GOOD.

Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by Smigit on 14 Nov 2005 - 16:16
why? what do we have to gain if neowin uses it? Its just 15 more lines of code we need to load on each page visit.

Keep in mind tha Micro$oft has been doing the same thing since the 80s - buying companies, rebranding their products and selling them to us.
The difference here is that Google gives it to us fro free and Micro$soft charged us for it up the gazoo. Oh, the other difference, google's stuff actually works. I have no problems with them (google) collecting all my info and using it anyway they want. Hell if my parole officer wants me to call him every 2 hours to tell him where I am, why should I have a problem with google knowing what sites I've been to?
Trust me folks, if someone wants to find out anything about you, they will.

...so slooooooow...

note: In providing this free service, Google is going to put many paid professional site-tracking services out of business; it's a $450M industry.

I'm tryin to add it to a site that doesn't have the www part in it's address. (Personal website on a friends local ISP) Keep getting invalid url format, or something like that.
Quote this comment #22.1 Posted by TrevorB on 14 Nov 2005 - 23:57
Try adding www as a subdomain redirecting to the home directory. If you're able to do that, it should work.
