The November Community Technology Preview (CTP) release of Windows Vista has made its way into the hands of some, but seemingly not many, testers. The build number is 5259. What's new? Windows Antispyware is now integrated in, as expected. Windows Media Player 11 is there. Instant Off seems to be working. And there are a number of user-interface changes, such as an "orb-shaped" start button and a new start-panel menu. ActiveWin.com has posted a bunch of Vista November CTP screen shots that are worth checking out. We're betting more testers will get access to the new build in the next few days.

Looks like Build 5259 being discussed in the forums was true after all ...

note to neowin: do not post stuff like this when its only in the hands of TAP testers. when the tech beta testers (aka: everyone else) gets access please post then.
second your a few days late with this news. anyone who cared was already "beating the bush" back in the windows beta section of the forums.
#2.1 ShadowPHP on 26 Nov 2005 - 10:02
Its up to Neowin what they post and when. Not you.
#2.2 Smigit on 26 Nov 2005 - 12:13
1st point: its news, I dont care if not all the testers have it, I want to know how Vista is progressing. Whether or not a tester yet has it is irrelevant to me as a member who is not on the beta program.

2nd point: it may be old but its news to me. If you find it old skip it or dont reply with another "its old news". that form of reply is "getting old"
#2.3 Kushan on 26 Nov 2005 - 15:54
I didn't know about it and I care. I always find it interesting to know what's happening with the latest OS that we're all going to end up using, so piss off and stop trolling.

Well according to the forums this build was pulled, and 5262 will be released next week

Dam the site it slow must be getting hammered…
Who likes the new orb start button I love it, anyone know if it’s a option can you change it
(6 replies) #5 Syphonic on 26 Nov 2005 - 10:22
Oh man what are they doing to the interface? That orb looks ridiculous!
#5.1 Syphonic on 26 Nov 2005 - 10:26
Then again, they can do whatever the hell they like to the other interfaces. As long as they don't mess with 'Classic' since that's all I'll be using.
#5.2 accesser on 26 Nov 2005 - 10:27
I think that’s the key, they need to make it so people can change the interface how they want it, you don’t like the new interface but I do, I hope they realize this and put in plenty of customization.
#5.3 Ifoow on 26 Nov 2005 - 14:57
Most people don't want to change the interface/ don't know how to do that.

Classic started looking a bit bad in XP's adaptions for Luna and the Explorer UI, and in the Vista builds I've checked out Classic in, it looks plain horrible. Sure, they're supporting the old "Classic" look, but it doesn't seem via their own UI guidelines anymore, just by the visual looks. The result is a UI looking really strange compared to a Classic Explorer in e.g Windows 2000.
#5.5 HawkMan on 26 Nov 2005 - 17:49
nah, it's just that the world is progressign, and your brain is stratign to realize how much Classic sucks
#5.6 Ravensworth on 26 Nov 2005 - 22:24
Classic does not suck, and fortunately there will probably be a nice classic theme made for WindowBlinds.

I like the new start menu

Oh yeah, can't wait to see the "orb-shaped" Start button
(1 reply) #8 Painkiller on 26 Nov 2005 - 13:58
One question.

Can somebody pease tell me if the server version will also get the update too??

Regards
#8.1 sphbecker on 28 Nov 2005 - 14:49
The server edition of Windows Version 6.0 (which is still codenamed Longhorn Server) is slated to be released 6-9 months after Vista.
(2 replies) #9 Ifoow on 26 Nov 2005 - 14:51
Sometimes I really think people at microsoft are retarded. It looks like crap, and it is not userfriendly at all. Or maybe that's just because it's a test build....?
#9.1 obsolete_power on 27 Nov 2005 - 05:09
How is the interface not userfriendly? The windows xp one was not changed much except the color and they made it more "bubbly" but this is completely new and redesigned and i think it looks rather sleek
#9.2 sphbecker on 28 Nov 2005 - 14:55
It appears they have taken down the screen shots so I can't look at them mysefl, but I would replay to that statement in two ways.

1). Yes, it is a test build which means there is a lot of user feedback which will still go into the final product.

2). Anytime you make big changes to the way something looks people always complain. The way something looks is really an opinion, so it is hard to say how it should look. Like with most new things, Vista's look will grow on you as you see it more and more.

Instant off? Does it mean it takes 1 second to shut the computer down instead of 1 minute?
#10.1 Jugalator on 26 Nov 2005 - 15:02
My XP computer (that isn't freshly installed and with lot of apps installed) takes about 10 secs to turn off.

If it takes a minute, it's likely due to software issues locking things up, or hardware drivers acting weird.
#10.2 Jugalator on 26 Nov 2005 - 15:04
Oh, one more thing -- can be your BIOS too...
I noticed a huge improvement when patching my BIOS to an about two years newer version.
#10.3 evilpig on 26 Nov 2005 - 17:34
Yeah same here
#10.4 sphbecker on 28 Nov 2005 - 15:10
When they talk about instant off I think they are talking about the new stand-by mode. It saves the application states and goes into the standby mode nearly instantly; which makes the computer appear to be turned off. At that point you still have "instant on" capabilities. After a period of time the computer turns its self off completely and you no longer have "instant on," but you still have all of your work saved.

This is basically the same thing XP's does when you tell it to go to Standby after 20 minutes and hibernate after 6 hours. It just works better because the new Standby mode is faster and uses less power, and the computer doesn't have to wake-up to hibernate because the application states have already been saved.
#11 bucko on 26 Nov 2005 - 15:23
I'm sure the EU will go after them for more £ to ask them to get rid of the Windows Antispyware app LOL.
#12 jimbo11883 on 26 Nov 2005 - 16:19
Unless they pull another "Whistler Beta 2 UI Swap" on us again, this is the final look of Vista...
(1 reply) #13 sendmarksmail on 26 Nov 2005 - 17:42
Saw the screenshots of 5259 and the new orb looks alright, but the start menu is horrible. What's with the floating user icon?? Looks off if you ask me. Hopefully classic will look ok, that's what I currently use in XP. One thing I'm excited about is the "quicksearch" ability! Don't care much about looks, but this is just bad!!
#13.1 Ravensworth on 26 Nov 2005 - 22:29
I agree, the user icon looks ridiculous like that. Actually I never liked those to begin with, and I always turn them off. I know who I am, I don't need a stupid icon of a horse to know I'm logged into the correct account. The whole start menu looks terrible though; I'll definately continue using the classic version.

Well... they screwed this up didn't they..

I can see Fisherprice buying most of the OEM licenses for their crappy kiddie laptops

The UI looks so childish, if they release this 'as is' (as far as the UI goes) I won't be buying.
I liked the glass look, but now they have taken it too far. WMP11 sucks major ass

Everything looks too chunky.

The only thing I like is the control panel system.

#14.2 rm20010 on 27 Nov 2005 - 21:51
On the bright side... at least Vista's glass beats the Fisherprice blue in Windows XP's Luna.
#15 Ifoow on 26 Nov 2005 - 21:04
true dat
#16 Ravensworth on 26 Nov 2005 - 22:41
What is up with the ugly black and white tray icons? Looks like something from Mac OS 7.

Again, One question.

#18 Matt500 on 27 Nov 2005 - 01:25
Im glad vista offers more than just a new interface, Im kinda sick of seeing the glass effect everywhere now and that start button is so desktopx which Ive never liked, might be nice for kids
#19 tiwaris on 27 Nov 2005 - 01:50
The corners are rounded but do not look smooth. It needs some work.
(1 reply) #20 Cubiz on 27 Nov 2005 - 03:44
IE7 looks horrible, several icons appear to have alpha channel issues, the way the start menu displays the user picture makes it seem out of place, WMP looks like it gained 50lbs since WMP10... If you looked closely under the system information text in the MS AntiSpyware screenshot, you can faintly see some text that is barely visable because of the colour Microsoft chose to use. I agree with whoever said it; the whole interface just seems very chunky and bloated. And on top of all that, bliss.bmp is still a 800x600 image! :o

On the plus side, I quite like the updated start button and taskbar (although buttons on the taskbar look far too big). The Control Panel > System window looks nice as well - I like that gradient thing they've done on the left side of the window.

Like someone else said, unless they pull a Whistler Beta 2 UI swap again, Vista is going to be an incredibly ugly OS.
#20.1 Daffy_Duck on 27 Nov 2005 - 16:16
Agree. I don't like the glass thing. It's not consistent with the rest of the interface. I think they should get rid of the whole windowframe concept altogether or integrate it more into the window somehow. The Mac OS only has a bar at the top of most windows and it complements the window. There is just too much inconsistency here. It looks really messy to me. Hopefully it will improve.
(1 reply) #21 ev0| on 27 Nov 2005 - 03:57
it can't be any uglier than xp, and everyone uses that.
#21.1 g_denne on 27 Nov 2005 - 05:18
It won't be uglier than Xp, it certainly has a half decent look to it, although, I don't understand some of the UI choices that MS make. They are really puzzling in consistancy and changing what works in previous versions.

This UI, even though not the final, is nice but certainly not the jaw-dropping UI I was expecting when Vista/Longhorn was announced. It'll be competent and that'll be about it I reckon.
(4 replies) #22 sendmarksmail on 27 Nov 2005 - 04:11
The default for XP is ugly and worst of all the wallpapers they provide are 800x600. Come on, almost everyone now has LCD that support atleast 1280x1024. Atleast have different sizes for each wallpaper. Also, maybe they should add the Office 12 theme for the Vista OS. It looks real nice and sleek from the screenshots I've see. Anyone else agree with this? Or am I the only one who likes Office 12 look?
#22.1 King_John on 27 Nov 2005 - 06:17
I don't know anyone with an LCD monitor and even less people with monitors that can support more than 1024x768 without losing their vision from a 60Hz refresh.
#22.2 flyakite on 27 Nov 2005 - 06:36
You must not know many people then. Most everyone I know has an LCD monitor that supports 1280.
#22.3 Ravensworth on 27 Nov 2005 - 09:26
QUOTE

Woah, what kind of monitors do these people have? My old Samsung 17" monitor can do 1600x1200 at 75Hz, and even a 15" should handle 1024x768 at more than 60Hz. Also if you are talking about LCDs the refresh rate doesn't matter the same way it does on a CRT.
#22.4 Daffy_Duck on 27 Nov 2005 - 16:29
King_John,
Did you post that message in the early 80's?
#23 Dragular on 27 Nov 2005 - 04:55
I actully lile the Vista UI. But the Start Orb will look odd when a window is maximized ...

I don't shut down my computer. I would like if it was Instant ON!
#24.1 GOHARD on 27 Nov 2005 - 19:46
if you dont shut down then why do u need instant on??
#24.2 Daffy_Duck on 28 Nov 2005 - 14:31
He was telling us why he doesn't shut it down.
#25 bucko on 27 Nov 2005 - 16:57
I wish people could just let m$ work on the features rather than bum about how it looks.
#26 acidic-e- on 27 Nov 2005 - 21:19
if that's legit (for the neowin 5 stuff) then major credit to the neowin dev team that looks kick arse
#27 Stunna on 28 Nov 2005 - 01:05
People are acting like they wont be able to change the themes

and does windows blinds take up a lot of resources?
