- So I take it this is like Windows 98 Second Edition? Upgrades and Updates that should be free, but yet bundeled into a whole new OS?
Or is this a free download for Windows 2003 customers? -

- Just found out its not free. I will not be upgrading just for these features.
"Windows Server 2003 R2 is an update release of the Windows Server 2003 operating system that is built on top of Windows Server 2003 SP1 and includes new product features, specifically in the following areas: branch office management, identity and access management, and storage management. Windows Server R2 requires a new server license and is available for purchase through the same channels as Windows Server"

- Its an add-on, so it won't be free. Its kinda like a mega Service Pack. I wonder what they will do about Windows Server 2003 Service Pack as well :/

BTW: Thanks for the credit Steve.
Edit: I don't understand what the hell is wrong with the news commenting system. My links end end up with an extra space.

- I've been in the beta for the past year [less than I think, actually].

[although, I would have been more happy if I got into Vista instead...]

- Any new 2003 Server's will be 2003 R2. Its not designed for replacing existing 2003 Server's.

- I've been a beta tester for this for ages now. I downloaded it and they emailed me telling me that if I didn't download it, they'd throw me off the program. I downloaded it again. I got an even more threataning email saying I was on my last legs.
I decided never to beta test another Microsoft product again.
I'm still listed as a beta tester too. -

- MS never sends out emails like that so I don't know what the heck you are talking about... if you dont participate they just dont say anything and quietly dont put you on the next one

- Odd, I haven't been downloading every single build [busy with other work], and I've never got any emails from Microsoft like that. =/

- I got a couple of these e-mails, but they turned out to be sent to the wrong person.

- Dear Steven,
Several weeks ago you were selected to participate in the Microsoft® Windows Server™ 2003 R2 Beta. We would like to thank you for your interest in participating in the program.
Unfortunately, our records indicate that you have not yet downloaded the software from http://beta.microsoft.com to begin testing. As we have an extensive list of interested participants and a limited number of openings, we are asking that you download and install the software by Wednesday, May 25th. After this date, we will be removing inactive participants in order to extend invitations to others. -

- What Microsoft has said in the past still stands. Windows 2003 R2 is a free upgrade IF you have Software Assurance. The only reason this exists is becouse they are so far behind on Vista and Longhorn Server people were bailing out of Software Assurance becouse they were getting nothing in return for there money. You can view all this here under the licensing FAQ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003...censingfaq.mspx
