Microsoft has finally released the first beta of Windows Live Messenger to the first few select testers. Activation e-mails were sent out to the first batch of testers including the 'MSN Beta Butterflies' late Tuesday, and the initially released build carries the suffix '.0365'. This early beta release of Windows Live Messenger brings with it a completely revamped interface and many functionality changes including:
- Editable contact information and 'Buddy Renaming'
- Offline Messages
- Computer-phone audio sessions
- Folder sharing
The 140 or so million people not selected to participate in
this beta are out of luck this time around. The new version of the MSN protocol
being implemented in WLM checks for an authorized 'beta tester' passport
account upon login. Even pre-selected beta testers are out of luck until they
receive their activation e-mail from the testing team. On a related note,
Microsoft has just released a QFE patch to address issues with the login procedure
with MSN Messenger 7.5. This small patch updates the desktop client to version
7.5.0320 and requires an initial version of .0311 to update successfully.
Canadian testers are advised of the following by Microsoft concerning their WLM authorization e-mails:
"We have a bug in ideas.live.com that will make it so all you will see
is French text when you go to the site. We are fixing the bug right now and
hope to have ready sometime tomorrow. (Wednesday) In the meantime we are going to hold off
sending you the download/authorization link. I know this will disappoint all of
you who are following the newsgroups and wouldn't mind wading your way through
the French text. But there are hundreds of you who are not on the newsgroups
yet who will be surprised by this poor experience. Thanks for your
patience!"

OT: These new smileys freak me out!
But of course, this is only real news in the Messenger world, as other protocols and IM's have had some of this already.
way too much for a program that is currently testing at version 8
My biggest gripe with Messenger was sign in issues a few months back but that seems sorted out now, at least for me it is. Besides I always had the same problem with Yahoo IM.
Being BETA, not optimized and having debug code doesn't justify the memory usage. Before I installed the BETA version, 7.5 was taking up just as much and at various times of usage messenger would lag for a bit and it's memory usage would jump to 80+MB.
I seriously think they should start from scratch and optimize as they go and not keep rereleasing the same crap time and time again with some insignificant updates added to it.
<P>I have received my activation email and a beta 3 days ago.. Not sure if its the same build, highly doubt it.</P>
About v7.5 QFE3, i.e. 7.5.320, we were set to release this later this week but found a bug which we didn't want to ship. The bug is minor so 7.5.320 is still a good build, however the official build will probably be v7.5.322. I'm working on getting a g-link to that build that we can post in newsgroups and forums so that people with sign in issues can see if it fixes their problems.
The goal of v7.5 QFE3 is to fix (or get better erros on) sign in issues. No new features. If people want more information on what is in v7.5.322 versus v7.5.311 (i.e. the version on http://messenger.msn.com, then post a comment reply to this thread.
o a lot of people were experiencing sign in issues with v7.5.311 (QFE2), we took some changes to fix that or to give better error messages to figure out what was going wrong. And there was another fix to get our error reporting correct. As a byproduct, there have been reports that sign in is faster. If you or someone you know was having sign in issues please give the 7.5.320 build or the 7.5.322 build a try when it is available? They are identical when it comes to sign in.
o in Korea, if you were using an IME (Input Method Editor), you would type shortcut for your favorite emoticon and get an extra character. Now emoticons are key to any IM program and it didn't make sense to not fix this (and we found a simple code fi
o if you had a Dynamic Background from Blue Mountain, bought it and installed it, then the Text Ads which you should have been getting while you had a Dynamic Background on weren't showing up.
o there is a DLL which is central to our Audio / Video features, we had to take a new version of that to fix a bug where Messenger would crash if you unplug a USB device after running the Audio Video Tuning Wizard on that device.
