The December Microsoft Windows Vista Community Technology Preview (CTP) is the third in a series of early Windows Vista builds being released to an extensive technical community. The CTP program is designed to involve customers and partners in the various stages of Windows Vista development by facilitating timely and relevant feedback.

Build 5270 was signed off as the code ready for beta testers and MSDN customers for the December CTP. After no November CTP there should be a few surprises and additions from the last build that testers have used (5231).

Microsoft is on schedule to have the majority of Windows Vista features code-complete by the end of 2005, and the CTP program will help enable Microsoft to provide testers with a feature-complete version of the product sooner than for any previous Windows release.

The December CTP will be distributed to testers in the Windows Vista Technical Beta Program, and is available to more than half a million Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers. The December CTP offers developers, IT professionals, and Windows enthusiasts an opportunity to review and test some of the operating system's significant security and performance enhancements and innovations. It also showcases progress on the overall user experience and design elements in Windows Vista.

How can i get this?
Quote this comment #3.1 Posted by Nexx295 on 19 Dec 2005 - 20:43
You have to be a beta tester, MSDN or TechNet subscriber. This is the only way you can download it (legally).

I signed up for TechNet plus about 6 months ago, mainly to be able to get Vista betas, and you can get them, but it takes a long time. I normally get my CD more then a month after the MSDN guys get to download. TechNet does not yet allow downloads.

I wish I could get this from connect, I have everything but this...... Lucky People.

I still don't see it on MSDN
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by UnaBonger on 19 Dec 2005 - 21:03
I think it depends on your type of MSDN subscription... Might be the Universal subscription only. I know I cant see it either
Quote this comment #6.2 Posted by chorpeac on 19 Dec 2005 - 21:12
I'm sure our company has the full subscription. Can anyone verify that MSDN has it yet or not?
Quote this comment #6.3 Posted by Slugsie on 19 Dec 2005 - 23:08
Not on my MSDN Universal (or whatever it's now called).

Got the new Technet Plus DVD's in today - no 5270 available...
Just the 5231 in this shipment.

So how do you go about getting the 5270 for Techent Plus Subscriber????
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by sphbecker on 20 Dec 2005 - 18:34
We will probably get it in the Jan CD mailing. TechNet always seems to be a month behind Vista because the monthly mailings are finalized on the 1st and new Vista builds always seems to come out a few days too late. I really hope they consider adding a Download option for TechNet.

I am a Universal Volume License Subscriber and dont see it on MSDN yet either...
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by jasondefaoite on 19 Dec 2005 - 22:53
Same... yet again MSDN users are the 2nd class citizen's in MS's world.
Quote this comment #8.2 Posted by sphbecker on 20 Dec 2005 - 18:36
I really would not look at it that way. You are not the primary beta testing group, so Microsoft's first concern is to get it to that group (although I will say that I have been a part of that group before and MS doesn't always get new builds to them quickly either). MSND and TechNet get Vista builds for compatibility testing and as a nice little bonus, you really are not beta testers.

Why not just wait till Beta 2 with all its bells and whistles? They say it will be released to the general public then, it will have more then these interium crap builds, and you can actually register it cause you'd get it legallly and wont have to scrounge around for a non existant antiwpa for this build.
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by Nexx295 on 19 Dec 2005 - 21:41
Maybe because some of us have to test it? And it's already legal for beta testers and subscribers.

I am about to get my MSDN subscription. Instead of reading about it on neowin and wondering about it, I will have a chance to get my hands dirty with it. Sigh...

Hmmm not on my MSDN Universal or Team Suite... anyone know how long they usually delay the release to MSDN? I thought before it was actually up before the beta site.
Quote this comment #16.1 Posted by jasondefaoite on 19 Dec 2005 - 23:26
The Oct CTP took 2 weeks to show up on MSDN after the release to the beta testers... Thurrott did mention for the Oct CTP a delay of a week for MSDN subs. Therefore... since the announcement was for a simultaneous release... expect it next week on MSDN
Quote this comment #16.2 Posted by jwjw1 on 20 Dec 2005 - 05:05
Team Suite LOL....probably a long time before it shows up there

You might find the following website very interesting:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/windowsvista/get...ta/default.aspx

It looks like only existing MSDN Universal Subscriber's will get this Beta, which makes no sense whatsoever considering the fact that Microsoft is attempting to Discontinue the Universal Subscription by not allowing any new Universal Subscriptions to take place.
Quote this comment #16.4 Posted by threedaysdwn on 20 Dec 2005 - 18:13
A lot of times they say "MSDN Universal" when they mean "MSDN Pro/Enterprise/Universal"

Earlier Today, I called up MSDN to complain about the fact that they (Microsoft) said, that it would be released to both Microsoft Beta Tester's and MSDN Subscriber's at almost the same time of day, yet it now almost 9:00 P.M. Microsoft Time and I still do not see it on my MSDN Subscriber Downloads Page, and I suggest that everyone else do the same, if enough MSDN Subscriber's complain to Microsoft, they just might stop treating us like Second Class Beta Tester's.
Quote this comment #21.1 Posted by jasondefaoite on 20 Dec 2005 - 14:58
What was MS's response to you on this?
Quote this comment #21.2 Posted by kevpan815 on 20 Dec 2005 - 15:28
They said that us MSDN Subscriber's might not get access to it until After the Holiday's.
Quote this comment #21.3 Posted by sphbecker on 20 Dec 2005 - 18:12
MSDN people are 2nd class beta testers, if you even want to call them beta testers. MS gives MSDN people access to the beta code so that you can test it with YOUR software (if you didn't forget, MSDN is a resource for software developers).

Anyway, I feel your pain. I get my stuff through TechNet Plus and because they don't allow downloads I have to wait for the monthly CDs. It hasn't been a big deal so far because Vista isn't stable enough for me to use as my primary OS, but once it is, then I will probably spend more time wishing I had the latest build.

Does this build support SATA drives yet? I tried the last few and ended up giving up trying to install them due to no SATA drive support.
Quote this comment #25.1 Posted by kevpan815 on 20 Dec 2005 - 17:01
Beta 1, 5219, and 5231 all work fine with my 80 GB Seagate SATA Hard Disk Drive (In the Box Support). I have an Intel SATA Hard Disk Controller (Also, in the Box Support), by the way.
Quote this comment #25.2 Posted by Zelpus on 20 Dec 2005 - 20:07
I tried all those builds with a 160g sata maxtor on a sil 3114 and none worked. I know by reading around tons of other people have the same issue. Maybe they have better support for intel sata than silicon image?
(2 replies) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #26 Posted by patseguin on 20 Dec 2005 - 16:44
Are you kidding? This "advanced" OS doesn't even support SATA?
Quote this comment #26.1 Posted by threedaysdwn on 20 Dec 2005 - 18:14
What are you talking about?

The question wasn't whether it "supports" SATA (of course it does). The question was whether it includes drivers for certain SATA controllers.
Quote this comment #26.2 Posted by sphbecker on 20 Dec 2005 - 18:18
Your choice of words is interesting. It technicly does not SUPPORT anything; it is a BETA product with NO SUPPORT.

All current versions of Windows support SATA with no problem; it goes without saying that Vista will as well.

anyone have a cd/dvd cover? (the kind you print out to stick on the cd/dvd as a label)

This build did not impress me at all... The install took forever, it uses too much memory, and it's still pretty slow (as in slow in response). I await for beta 2 ...
