How Much Are 1,000 Pixels Worth? A Neowin Subscription?!

Advertisement (Why?)
As we noted recently, real estate availability on the now infamous milliondollarhomepage.com is approaching zero. How would you finish what has been a meteoric rise to fame and fortune, online? eBay off the last few pixels, stupid!

The winner of the auction gains a prime spot on the page, which the owners are guaranteeing will be on the internet for five years but could be much longer; indeed ' the aim is to keep the site online for decades to come, like a permanent internet 'time capsule' that could one day become a famous piece of modern art!'

Currently standing at $20,100, the last 1000 pixels are being auctioned off to potential buyers. The site had been offering pixels for $1 per pixel, suggesting they were either previously seriously under-valued or are now significantly over valued - we'd go with the former. Indeed, with 9+ days to go, we think it $20,100 is just the start, and it will go a lot, lot higher. So, we're going to have a competition for Neowin members. Leave us a comment with your guess as to what the end price will be, and you could win yourself a very exclusive Neowin subscription ( click for rules / more details). Best of luck!

View: eBay auction

Rules
1. Winner will be picked by the editor, whose decision is final.
2. Last entry must be made 24hrs before end of auction - i.e. Jan-10-06 10:42:28 PST
3. If eBay close the auction, we're closing the competition - sorry!
4. The closest guess to the final price will be the winner.
5. In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen at random between the closest contestants.
6. All entries should be made in dollars.

The prize on offer is a one year subscription to Neowin; more information as to what this entails can be found here. Alternativley, if you want to help Neowin out, and get a subscription anyway, you can sign up here!

Well duh.. it's on the MILLIONDOLLARHOMEPAGE..

of course it's going to go for $1,000,000.

so to be the closest let me be more specific..

the bidding will slowly creep up over the next week reaching an est. $200,000

then during the closing bid war the price will escalate exponentially.

Google will be a major player

Bill Gates or a representative sponsored by Microsoft will be the final winner.

So they can stick a "Powered by MS" trademark logo on the page.

All in all the page is a testament to the price of SPAM ADS.

A quick peek at the page source shows that advertisement-online.net and ez-signups.com are the majority share holders of pixels, sharing space with the same sort of links blog and forum admins are accustomed to constantly delete (a.k.a. spam) .

***

And to answer the original question of "how much a pixel is worth?".

It's not the size of the pixel but the PR of the page and number of links on the page that governs their value.

A LINK from a high PR page with few links transfers the most PR and is therefore worth the most.

MDH is a "virtual link farm" which lowers the amount of transferable PR even though the site has a PR 7.

The real question though is if PR is even transferred via image maps?

It seems like the PR on some of the first sites added near the top are going to experience PR gains as high as +4PR meanwhile all the links listed after the beginning of the pages are see no gain at all.

This can most likely be attributed to Googlebot only indexing the first 50K or so of the site,

making the remaining 525K of excess html code virtually worthless as far as unrealestate goes.

Anyways Microsoft for a cool Mil; MS 8 ball in the corner pocket.

This is ridiculous although clever. I cant believe people who have actually spent that kinda money for a few pixels. Heck if I had that much money I would just advertise on a bill board or bus stop banner or something.

I can't believe the inanity of it all. I really can't.

How can advertising like this be effective? What does that say about your company or product? That you're impulsive and eccentric?

I need to find some way to form a lawsuit to drain some of the money out of this carnival attraction - don't worry, I'm not greedy, I just need about fifty thousand dollars to pay off my school loans. Hell, I'll sue for all of it then disperse it in chunks to people with school loans - what a great idea! Then some good can come of this, rather than lining some fool's pockets with the idiocy of the internet.
#54.1 M2Ys4U on 03 Jan 2006 - 00:13
awww, somebody's jelous.
#54.2 Smigit on 03 Jan 2006 - 04:31
How about instead of resorting to a lawsuit you think of your own constructive idea and raise the money. While it may not be your cup of tea, it was agood idea and apparently others thought so too.

Besides, hows paying off your school loans a good cause. Sounds greedier than this guy buying a car, not that it's wrong of him to do it in the 1st place. A better cause might be to give it to charrity if you want to help people out, not give it to people that can already get an education then go on to work for another 60 years and live comfortably off it.
#54.3 VXP.WMF on 05 Jan 2006 - 09:57
In the first version of the MDH story I heard, the kid was originally just trying to pay off his school loans too.

When he made a grand (less than a hobbyist) he reported it to the media and concept popularity went critical (viral).

Memetical the premise taps every ones get rich quick while working at home ideal.

The propagation of copy cats will far supercede the original both financially and in total reach of distribution.

It's would be feasible for a similar type of viral marketing scheme to infect all sectors of the market for a brief time due to the pattern of web trends.

It's even possible you may start seeing pixelads banners replacing all the tired Adsense spots once the meme is reversed by a proper advertising agency..

In reality: It's financial fiction cleverly crafted to earn affiliate commissions from the inflated page views generated by wannabe millionaires.

Most of the links featured point to the same three advertising agencies and the owner of all three domains is.. drumroll please..

Well if you really wanted to win you would wait about 10 mins before the auction closes....
#72.1 rm20010 on 02 Jan 2006 - 19:20
The last entry into this 'competition' must be made 24 hours before the auction closes. And those last 24 hours could cause that bidding price to skyrocket.
