Developer Hopes Apple Lightning Won't Strike Twice

Mac developer Dan Wood knows what happens when Apple Computer has the same idea he does.

A couple of years back, his small firm, Karelia Software, released a set of consumer Web services known as Watson. Some months later, Apple added a very similar set of utilities under the Sherlock 3 moniker. Now Wood is worried that history is about to repeat itself--or, as he puts it, that lightning is going to strike twice.

Karelia has been working on a program called Sandvox, a set of tools designed it to make it easier for people to publish their own rich Web site with photos, audio and other features typically not found on personal Web sites. "For years, Macintosh users have been clamoring for an easy, elegant way to get their content--photo albums, Web logs, just basic sites--published on the Web," Wood said in a statement. "We created Sandvox because there were no other applications that 'got it.'"

hmmm.... I found the WordPress installation pretty straight forward. But I'm not by any means new to web servers, database server, scripting and over-all nerdieness. Still, there are lots of step-by-step instructions on how to get something like that to work on a mac.

Not to mention countless services online that do this for free or for a cost. Most of them are really easy to use. I'm not sure what this company is going to improve upon. Seems like this "technology" has been in the hands of users for years now.

As for Apple stealing the "concept" (if you can call it that) and implimenting it directly in the OS, this is expected. Windows XP implimentation of the .zip format has all but killed WinZIP. I use to see WinZIP installed everywhere, now the software is not neccessary.

No, that's because WinZip became a really crappy programa nd everyone uses WinRar or other programs that handle a lot more formats and are faster and "cleaner"

Actually, the code in XP for ziping is actually licensed from Winzip themselves.

trance: ohh...so that is how WinZIP has managed to stay in buisness.

Shadrack: No idea... can't comment on Winzip's financial stability, but I bet they have licensed their tech out to a number of different companies.

Doesn't quite make sense given that the product below has been out for quite a long time now and it already does photo albums, web logs and basic sites...

iWeb looks perfect. Just like pages, but ...for Websites... How could it go wrong?
I know all my friends (Who enjoy making free webs pages) would absolutly _LOVE_ iWeb.

Sounds exactly like what happened to dashboard. Konfabulator creator was forced to sell out to Yahoo cause Apple took his idea and put it in 10.4.

Who would have thought that Apple would have ever used stolen software/ideas.

it's a shame for the guy but he's too slow, sounds like he started working on the idea a long time ago....well he should have released a beta or something

what sucks about iweb is that you HAVE to have .mac to be able to use it, which sucks cause i wish i could just have it work with my custom web hosting!
