Neowin.net is proud to unveil our brand new PowerUser.TV podcast channel- Neocast! Our first episode being released today, was actually recorded a few days ago as a "test" recording. Each Neocast will be under a section heading, todays episode being a Gaming episode. We should (hopefully) have a Neocast: Sports and a Neocast: Linux coming up soon!
Gaming episodes will be every week though, and will be hosted by Paul (lardiop) and Todd (LOC). We hope down the road to have Neowin members take part much like they do with the Poweruser.TV podcasts. Since this is our first release, please feel free to offer suggestions, and critique us as you like.

Our first episode covers the following news topics:
- The rumored Playstation 3 launch price
- 600,000 X-Box 360's sold
- System Shock 3 rumors and Bio-Shock
- Flight Simulator X

And a longer discussion on these topics:
- Battlefield 2 1.2 Patch discussion, and the Battlefield 2 "Booster Packs"
- Guild Wars: Chapter 2, and the upcoming free PvP weekend event
- "Blast from the Past" section where we discuss old games that mean alot to us
- Small discussion on Project Offset and the new "Crowd" movie released recently

Again, this is our first episode, so some things may be rough around the edges. Feel free to suggest improvements and additions you feel would make the podcast better. Also note, Neocast episodes are seperate and have nothing to do with the Poweruser.TV episodes.

Will check it out.

I thought poweruser.tv was Neowins podcast...

Anyway, I'm glad to see a podcast individual to Neowin, I'm looking forward to this. (by that i mean getting the time to listen to it)

i can only listen to it with Quicktime how do i download it as a mp3 file??
#3.1 vetlardiop on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:34
When the Quicktime page opens, just go File > Save Page As assuming you're using Firefox.

The AAC problem will be resolved asap.

completely seperate from poweruser.tv ..... yet hosted at exactly the same place
#5.1 vetLOC on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:52
Yes, it is hosted at the same exact place. Bandwith is bandwith. Poweruser.tv podcast are done by Brad and Kristen from Stardock and Neocast is done by Neowin staff only. Therefore they are seperate.
#5.2 Frogboy on 19 Jan 2006 - 23:14
Neocast is one of the channels of PowerUser.TV.
#6 aStRaLgOd on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:30
Neocast: Linux..... hmmm gotta split my hard drive now....
(2 replies) #7 mitt on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:38
Not listed on podnova yet ?
#7.1 vetLOC on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:04
The Neocast page itself has links to Podnova and the Yahoo Podcast directory, but the links don't seem to be working correctly. I don't really know much about how it works with the rss feeds and all, but I will get someone on it. It may take a little bit though.

Um, You carnt seem to download the file. The download link plays the file in the browser.
#8.1 vetLOC on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:51
I assume you are using Firefox, you will have to use IE for some reason as FF just gives a html page to download. I'll have someone look into it.
#9 Shycho on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:48
If you want to download it right click and save as.

The podcast looks promising and its not to long which is awesome, listening to it now.
#10 CUBBYJR1 on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:48
why no video to see you guys
(5 replies) #11 dduardo on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:49
I don't know which program you guys used to encode the mp3, but it isn't formatted correctly. I can't play the file at all in mplayer on Linux. I've listened to every poweruser.tv podcast and never had this problem. I've downloaded the file through firefox and wget multiple times and it just doesn't work.

Just to confirm that I haven't downloaded a corrupted version here is the md5sum:

942d30dd29a95b4226001ea49844b173 Neocast1.mp3
#11.1 vetLOC on 19 Jan 2006 - 19:54
We used PowerGramo to record it, it was the only program we could get working with Skype on Paul's system (without major issues). The only reason I could see the mp3 not being formatted correctly is from editing, I don't see how a recorded mp3 would be not formatted right by default. :|
#11.2 dduardo on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:10
The file you enoded isn't an MP3, it is AAC.

Here is the file info for poweruser.tv:

MP3 file with ID3 version 2.3.0 tag

Compared to is the Neowin Podcast:

MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kBits, 44.1 kHz, Stereo

During the editing process you must of spliced mp3, encoded it into aac without knowning and then mashed it up with mp3. Perhaps you can play around with your sound editor to output standard MP3, not AAC.
#11.3 vetLOC on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:16
Well neither Paul or myself edited the original file. Tim Dorr was the one who edited, added the music, cleaned it up a bit etc. But he is on a MAC, so maybe he did output it in AAC at one point, I don't know.

Other than that, not much else we can do really. We aren't using the same program to record like they use with the Poweruser.tv episodes, so if that is the reason, we can't help it much. We will look into it though.
#11.4 vetlardiop on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:33
Thanks man, I'll clarify this with Tim. We just give him our unformatted file and out comes the podcast.

Like we said in the podcast, this was a test to get all the feedback we need to make it successful.
#11.5 vettimdorr on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:40
I think it's the damn Auditon MP3 exporter codec. I'll put it as as a WAV and encode with LAME.
#12 simeandrews on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:11
Oh my god, Hover! That game was wicked!!!

I just took it out and started playing it!
#13 TRshady on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:23
Ricky Gervais with Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkingtons podcast is still the worlds number 1. :p
Interesting though, looking forward to the windows podcast ...
(1 reply) #14 Thorpe on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:36
You got to change your plug-in settings in Firefox to stop QuickTime from automatically playing it.
#14.1 vetlardiop on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:40
Added to the feedback notes, that still happens with PoweruserTV as well afaik.

Thanks though!
#15 Vourdex on 19 Jan 2006 - 20:50

Is there a link yet so I can add this into my Zencast software for auto pickup?

(Other podcasting software is available)

#16.1 vetlardiop on 20 Jan 2006 - 03:00
The RSS feeds and such should be up on http://neocast.poweruser.tv soon. Some sort of setup as the main Poweruser.tv podcast

A few of the subscription methods (Yahoo, Podnova and Ipoddere are active now if you look down the right side of that site. iTunes and Odeo should be up soon.

Here's the main .xml feed:

Please tell me you guys don't say "where unprofessional podcasting sounds better" like the power user one does, most Podcast are unprofessional right now and it just sounds lame and cringe worthy as they didnt sound better, had to stop listening to that. Ive high hopes for this tho, gonna go download
#19.1 vetlardiop on 20 Jan 2006 - 02:59
The first one was more of a test than anything. Dont expect it to reflect the quality of upcoming shows. We're only going to get much better
#20 CUBBYJR1 on 20 Jan 2006 - 02:09
is this only audio and no video
(2 replies) #21 PlainLazy on 20 Jan 2006 - 03:06
Even though poweruser.tv touches on Mac & Apple news from time to time; I think it's only fair if it has it's own podcast along with the possible Linux episodes and the existing Poweruser.tv with Kristen's team, who usually focus on Windows.
#21.1 KeR on 20 Jan 2006 - 03:14
I'd be willing to help them if they wanted to do an Apple/iPod oriented pod-cast.
#21.2 vetlardiop on 20 Jan 2006 - 03:50
All I can say is the staff plan to do many more of these Poweruser "Neocasts".

Stay tuned...

lol

"I moved here from Canada, and they think I am a little slow, eh?"

Excuse me but I find the canadian accent to be very funny.
No offense.

And the guy from Miami -- amigo hispano, 305 pa' siempre!
#22.1 vetLOC on 20 Jan 2006 - 05:11
To bad I'm not from Miami eh? New York in the hizzouze! Nor am I Spanish, or speak Spanish :|

Can Some One Please Answer me for Crying Out Loud Is This Supposed To Be Only Audio Or Video Or Both?
#23.1 vetLOC on 20 Jan 2006 - 06:10
No, there is no video at all, only audio.
(1 reply) #24 GriZly on 20 Jan 2006 - 05:57
well I think its nice to start a new gaming podacast. Just make sure your voices are clear with no echo next time and it'll be super.
#24.1 vetLOC on 20 Jan 2006 - 06:13
Well, for some reason on Skype my sound comes in fairly low. No idea how to fix it.

Other than that, the litle *blurbs* you hear are Paul miniimzing and maximizing his windows while he records
(1 reply) #25 GriZly on 20 Jan 2006 - 06:17
maybe you could invite some names from the community. For expample if you included a community leader of BF2 it would've made a great addition to the podcast. same things for the other games you've talked about.
#25.1 vetLOC on 20 Jan 2006 - 06:22
Well it's only our first podcast. We are going to try to bring in some big names for the future, but we don't quite know yet. I've been trying to being in a "special" guest for a bit, we'll see what happens
#26 blade707 on 20 Jan 2006 - 07:43
very nice, down all we need is a Mac dedicated one for all the mac users out there, but then again PowerUser.tv crew do a good jon of that in the first place.

nice work guys.
#27 Howard on 20 Jan 2006 - 11:19
