Samsung Toshiba have announced that their PC drives will be ready for launch in March. The company stated that the backwards compatible drive will read both DVD and CD formats as well as Blu-Ray. Richard Aguilera, western regional sales manager for optical disc-drive products at Samsung said “The first technology will burn Blu-Ray, but only read DVD and CD disks."

Drives with the ability to burn DVD and CD formats will appear in the second wave of drives, which is expected to be released between April and August. Aguilera gave his view on the adoption of the technology saying "First, you'll probably see the technology pop up in storage applications to replace tape technology, and you're likely to see the technology used by the telecommunications and the financial markets before you see it built into PCs."

As prices begin to fall it is expected more PC manufactures will include Blu-Ray into their PC systems.

I hope Windows Vista will support Blu-ray and HD-DVD
#3.1 skase on 21 Jan 2006 - 16:44
you can't support a cd with a floppy drive. vista will support anything but you need the appropriate hardware

I'll wait before I buy.

i think samsung and toshiba both make drives together, so they will work together producing hd dvd and blu ray drives

Samsung Toshiba isn't really Toshiba.

It's like AOL and Time Warner, they have a section which works together but both operate individually as well.

So will the drive be able to read blue-ray? lol it doesnt specifically mention so
#7.1 Lt-DavidW on 21 Jan 2006 - 12:48
Actually, yes it does mention it:

"The first technology will burn Blu-Ray, but only read DVD and CD disks."

kaptain chump yea I thought of that too.

I can burn the media BUT I cant read it anywhere?? Whats the point then? Have something stored on unreadable media? Makes no sense...I hope its a Neowin typo error.
#7.3 cpu121 on 21 Jan 2006 - 13:40
I think they mean that it will read and burn Blu-Ray but will only read DVD/CDs (ie not burn them)
#7.4 vetcashman on 21 Jan 2006 - 13:40
Im not too sure where the confusion is coming from, especially from neowinians. It will read Blu-Ray, it has to to be able to burn it. I will change my article so that no one else gets confused....

It's a very poorly written statement. It should have read: "The drive will be able to read and write Blu-Ray discs. It will be able to read DVD and CD discs but not write to them."

He probably assumed the readers would have a little uncommon sense.
#7.7 mufdvr3669 on 22 Jan 2006 - 02:36
No it won't be able to read blu-ray, just like my cd player can't read cd's and my dvd player can't read dvd's. I don't even know how I'm typing this right now since my web browser can't browse the web.

i wonder how much...but to be honest, I rarely even use my DVD media :p

If there were DVD-A Burners and DVD-A car radios then I'd be excited.

Any DVD burner drive can burn/reproduce "DVD-A discs". The only problem is there are only a small amount (and not too popular either) of commercial DVD-A discs/media.

Similar format to SACD: CD plus copy 'protection' plus audiophile-high-resolution-snake-oil.

Toshiba is one of the main HD-DVD backer... find it hard to believe that it will be produceing blue-ray drives
#10.1 nekrosoft13 on 22 Jan 2006 - 05:23
samsung thoshiba is not toshiba
#10.2 b_pizzle on 22 Jan 2006 - 21:47
i just read an article about this. apparently Toshiba has its foot in both doors (blu-ray and hd-dvd) just in case one fails. this is a joint venture with Samsung to make Blu-Ray drives.
#11 OfF3nSiV3 on 22 Jan 2006 - 01:23
how much will the drive cost?
