Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Build 5299 Leaks
Posted by Steven Parker on 22 January 2006 - 13:23 · 113 comments & 20559 views

Our friends over at Bink.nu are reporting that build 5299 of Internet Explorer 7 has leaked on the internet. Activewin has also posted 50 high-res screenshots of the build, probably after finding it available for download at tech enthusiast site JCXP.net
If you can find it, (JCXP asks that links not be posted anywhere) the build weighs in at 11.2 MB and can only be installed on Windows XP. We must remind our readers that the beta is not called a beta for nothing, it's completely unsupported! Should people need to install it please use something like System Restore so you can roll back.
A feature complete Beta 2 version of IE7 is expected to be released to testers around mid February, as reported by Paul Thurrott in his Short Takes for week ending January 23rd.

- I'm suprised they finally took the time to update the Windows 95 icons in options...

- There are still a couple lurking around in there.

- LoL - News has been a little slow recently hasn't it???
I'm having issues with displaying windows live mail properly now I've installed it, I don't know if anyone else is having problem - I may try to tweak some of the settings to get it working! -
#5.1 Posted by TheDarkKnight on 23 Jan 2006 - 14:22
- Way too late I'd say.
Anyways the Live Mail issue has been resolved before it could become an embarrasment

- It's better than before, but I still think MS have a long way to go in order to improve the UI of Internet Explorer and the rendering etc.
-
#8 Posted by natocccp on 22 Jan 2006 - 14:11
- It can be installed on Windows Server 2003 SP1.

#11 Posted by jbonello on 22 Jan 2006 - 14:57
- I installed it but it has problems with Windows Live Mail. Anyone beta testing the new mail system should not install it as the webmail won't let you read any of your messages

-
#14.1 Posted by briangw on 22 Jan 2006 - 15:33
- Create a reg file, edit it and add the following:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchScopes{DF81174C-0C8B-4A18-8FF7-9FAB5627CCFD}]
"DisplayName"="Google"
"URL"="http://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8"

- Yeaah it doesn't exactly look appealing. And I know people hate it when others say "this or that is stolen from Firefox!" but really, think about it. The Zoom feature is clearly taken from Opera. Bah I dunno, I'll probably install it but never use it.
-
#19.2 Posted by rm20010 on 22 Jan 2006 - 17:54
- Yes the Zoom was taken from Opera, but heck, it should be a nice addon for IE.
One thing MS doesn't (or hopefully won't) do is start circulating claims that "oh we implemented THIS first!" unlike some other organization.
-
#19.3 Posted by mlauzon76 on 22 Jan 2006 - 20:26
- Yes, and tabs were taken from BookLink Technologies' InternetWorks browser...by Opera!
-
#19.4 Posted by jp10558 on 22 Jan 2006 - 20:44
- How are they going to live without a "go" button? You wouldn't believe the number of people confused when there isn't one.
-
#19.5 Posted by shoust on 22 Jan 2006 - 21:11
- Its still there, the reload icon changes when you type an address.
-
#19.6 Posted by Octol on 23 Jan 2006 - 21:22
- I don't know if the zoom function you're talking about is the same thing, but IE has had a zoom function for images since IE4 (via IE4 Powertoys).
I've used these same powertoys on every Windows OS since Windows 95, currently have them installed on both WXP SP2 and WS2003 SP1 boxes (32-bit), and have in fact been using the same installer file (IE4POWER.EXE) since I downloaded it from Microsoft in December, 1997.

- i know its a beta so don’t even say it, and no im not a tester so don’t say that either. But is anyone getting a "could not validate the integrity of update.inf error? when trying to install using update.exe and i get an unknown error when trying to install using isetup.exe. And yes my windows is genuine so dont say that.
-
#20.1 Posted by ZTrang on 22 Jan 2006 - 22:47
- Yes, I had the same problem. For some reason validation didn't work using the normal install ("encountered an unknown error during validation", and I'm definitely running Genuine Windows - I certainly paid enough for it), and trying to bypass that using update.exe results in the update.inf error you experienced. I tried running it without installing, but a lot of features are broken if you do that, so I just gave it up in frustration. Maxthon works for me right now anyway.

- OMG! This is the worst IE ever. IE7.beta1 was ok but beta2 will be really big pain in the ass for developers. It's css rendering is buggy as hell and they removed all ways for workarounds (* HTML hack, height vs min-height values (height works like it really hould but min-height doesn't work at all) )
I really hope it's temporary. Beta or not beta but that kind of bugs should never happen.
BTW. beta2 really looks like from-programmer-to-programmer designed browser. Get an interface expert for gods sake.
Since beta2 i was really happy with IE and it's bugs and features but this version has gone really bad. I hope somebody from the development team reads this thread and does something about it. -
#29.1 Posted by danj205 on 22 Jan 2006 - 23:43
- Uhhh, they were only seen as "workarounds" or "hacks" because Internet Explorer 6 didn't support them properly. IE7 now does at long last. Microsoft have asked developers to fix up their websites and start using IE conditional comments if need be.
However, if Microsoft did implement things correctly then there shouldn't be any need to make special stylesheets and code for it. I hold my breath in anticipation.

Well when it comes to innovative, Opera is the way to go... it was miles and years ahead of its time, and remains my browser of choice. Waiting for IE7 final though, would love to give it a whirl. Need my mouse gestures though. Use Maxthon just for that.
-
#31 Posted by IntelliMoo on 22 Jan 2006 - 19:09
- Besides ms's beta teams failing to communicate once again (Windows Live Mail not working right?! WTF), I cannot believe that with tabs implemented a script is still allowed to resize the main ie window!!!! Waiting for Maxthon 2.0................

#34.1 Posted by signalpirate on 22 Jan 2006 - 21:31
- windows live mail does work... it didn't show up correctly for me the first time.. but the second time i logged in... everything was cool.. and now its working perfectly
i have to say though.. this is one hell of a buggy beta... beta 1 which i have been using since i was selected for testing .. is alot better then this ...
it seems to have a problem with loading pictures ( gifs ete.) if there is more then a couple .. then the last couple pics that are supposed to load get x'ed out ... like this reply box for example right now .. i have the font.. size.. bold italics and thats about it.. everything is x's ... you have to right click and choose show picture on every x.. and it will load...
i'm too lazy to uninstall it.. so going to use firefox for the time being

- Could someone check this for me please:
I can no longer play streaming WMV's like CMT.com's in neither IE 7 Beta 2 build 5299 or firefox 1.5.
Is it me or IE7? I've just updated IE6 to this beta2 preview and now streaming WMV videos don't start anymore. It gets stuck while 'connecting'. I already tried lowering my security levels.
Thanks

- Its Not working all that good with Digg.com. Also This ver you have the Choice to Uninstall it under --> Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> if you have SP2 check mark
"Show Updates" --> Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview

#42 Posted by chrisxtreme on 22 Jan 2006 - 23:30
- I found a funny bug. This will only work if you have no RSS feeds. When I first open the browser with just one tab open, my start page, the RSS button is grayed out. If I open another tab, and then close that new tab, the rss button is no longer grayed out. Then when clicking the little arrow next to the RSS button it bugs out and uses 60-100% of my cpu.

- i quite like it myself. pretty simple and clean and does what it says on the tin. seems very very fast too. im used to my customised operas interface and layout so it feels a bit weird but thats because im adjusting to it.

- I love how some of you guys are slagging off a leaked beta. I'm wordless.....
-
#51.1 Posted by predator001 on 23 Jan 2006 - 14:41
- i know...its a bit lacking in the realism. its not a final release and this beta has changed a fair amount since the first one so its clear they are still building it.
even then i find it pretty stable and quick. a few more tweaks to the UI and i think it'll be a fine browser.
-
#52 Posted by StuRReaL on 23 Jan 2006 - 10:18
- I can't believe it they actually took time to make a nice clean interface without missalignments and strange double borders appearing here and there :o
All that said though i'm a little confused about the order of the bits and bobs, like the address bar being at the top and the refresh button being miles away from the forward and back buttons.

The favorites drop down was annoying. It kept sticking when clicking on a link and it would only let me open one submenu at a time

- By the way for reference if anyone wants to go back to version 6, if you find after you go back entering a url loads the page in Firefox (did this to me) then you want to use system restore to get it back working properly. This is a very weird problem its almost like it saying "firefox is the default browser so open the page in that"
-
#59 Posted by mikemyres on 25 Jan 2006 - 12:31
- My friend told me that you cannot run IE6 and IE7 at the same time, this seems dumb as these betas are designed for web developers such as myself, But I just want them both then I'll download the beta :@
