A good three months after ATI released the Radeon X1800 XT they again release a new high-end product series, one that needs to match NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB version.

The one card to rule them all ? This youngest bunch from the ATI clan .. well beasts of the brute actually, has been developed under codename R580 and was due to arrive for a while now actually. ATI decided to increase the number of Pixel Shader units inside that graphics core from 16 to 48 and with success. Oh and please, don't get confused here, it's 48 pixel shader units not to be confused with the cards sixteen "true" pipelines.

In a 23 page article Guru3D.com will show you all the info you'll ever need.

I wonder how well the GeForce 7900 will perform compared to this?

the 7900 GTXTXTX is my only hope, it seems -- since the gains for this are MOSTLY on paper.

This would be a great time for ATI if Nvidia were focusing exclusively on DX10 since the 512 GTX is in low supply.

do you want to wait till March, or get the best there is NOW ?

^ Well for those who want dual card setups, you can't expect two ATI cards side-by-side in a SLi mobo, can you?

I'm sure people won't ditch their brand new mobos just for the latest video card.

Well, I would really love to buy ATI, but unless they come up with decent Linux drivers, I have to shop nVidia.

And because I run Linux doesn't mean I don't buy high-end cards -- my current card is a PCIe 7800GTX. I *do* boot windows once in a blue moon to play games. Exclusively for that.

I am on the same boat, but with a less mighty card. In my case, it's a humble 6600GT.

"I *do* boot windows once in a blue moon to play games."

However you spend most your day on a Windows related Tech site. pff

Well some of us
1) Make money administering said Windows systems
2) Actually have a life.

I spend most of my day on slashdot and 4chan, if you really had to know my browsing habits. I check Neowin once in a while now, for tech news.

It's windows *related* but not entirely windows centric. Your attempt at sounding smart has failed miserably.

I have turned away from ATI mainly because of their Crossfire, which is a pathetic attempt to rival the SLI
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by spIn on 24 Jan 2006 - 18:50
do you even bother to read reviews? ATi's X1900XT/XTX is KICKING right now, there's nothing to match it ATM.. the same stands for CrossFire, go read up.

While you may see as Crossfire great, I don't. Why buy a master card and a slave card when nVidia just sticks 2 cards together.
Quote this comment #6.3 Posted by spIn on 24 Jan 2006 - 19:02
the same reason why should I buy two 512 GTX for 750$ that aren't even in stock, when I can buy the CrossFire Master and Slave for less and perform far better?

sure you might not feel the same because of the paper launch of the X1800 but this time they've got it nailed right

You seem to have missed what he was getting at. The way Crossfire is implemented is horrible. I shouldn't be forced in having to buy a special version of a card to utilize the benefits of dual-card performance. Its nice to know that I could buy an SLI board now, purchase one card because that's all I got money for, and then buy a cheaper version of the same card down the road and get the benefits of SLI. Also, connecting the cards using external cabling is not my preferred method of execution. I like to keep my hardware connections hidden and as least-complicated as possible. With that being said, I am impressed with the numbers ATI's latest card is pushing. If I wasn't locked into an SLI-ready motherboard and I wasn't already in the process of ordering a second 6800GS to go with the one I already have to kick up my performance, I'd look into this new card. Oh well.

Exactly my point!

SLI requires you to buy:

- SLI bridge connector
- exactly identical pairs of SLI-ready videocards only

With CrossFire, you could, say, buy a plain ol' X1800XT, and then buy a X1900XT CrossFire card and voila, you'll have CrossFire.

Both implementations have their pros and cons.

Wow I am disappointed with the 1900 xtx. Looks like im going for the 7900 if its faster and I think it will be.

The "performance crown" is always changing hands. Ati had it with the X850 XT PE, Nvidia took it back with the 7800 GTX, Ati took it again with the X1900 XTX, Nvidia took it back with the 7800 GTX 512 and Ati has just reclaimed it with the X1900 XTX. Next Nvidia takes it back with the 7900, and the cycle continues.

There's no doubt that this is one awesome card, the 7900 will be awesome also.

I'll just wait for a 1000 $ version to come out.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a Graphic's card released that was years ahead of its time such as 64 pipelines 2GB GDDR3 RAM, 1800MHz core, 2200MHz memory, 256 pixel shaders.
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by Gersson on 28 Jan 2006 - 05:21
not really -- it would prob cost $2000 each
