Thanks to Steven Bink for this news update on Office 12.

Well I saw Office 12 demo's at IT Forum where the apps were named Office 2007, also as mentioned earlier on Bink.nu, the name change of all office apps now have the name Office in them. So "Microsoft Office Word" and not "Microsoft Word"

Now with Office Online Beta the name Office 2007 appears again, so we can expect to launch as Office 2007.

I also saw Exchange 12 as Exchange 2007, this might change to Exchange 2008 cause it will be released in Q1 2007. On the other hand marketing would like to see the names in sync. Nice detail is that the binaries for Exchange 12 are 8.0 while Exchange 2003 are 6.5.
7.0 had codename Kodiak and was cancelled.

Crap, Office 12 sounds much better. office 2007 sounds really boring!

plus, even the logo of office 12 looks nice, bet they come out with some crappy logo saying office 2007 now!

That blue-green O12 logo must be something made up by bink or whoever, because beta 1 uses the Office 2003 logo everywhere.
#2 dadan121 on 25 Jan 2006 - 13:19
Yeah, Office 12 sounded better.

It could be worst, it could be "Office Vista"
#3.1 lunamonkey on 25 Jan 2006 - 14:01
Like they did with Office XP :p

I like the year part, makes more sense to consumers to compare versions in this way.

Haha, it's 2006, if they release it this year we can all point and laugh at the name. I hate it when companies do this, like many sport games do this with there game titles.
#4.1 factoid on 25 Jan 2006 - 16:02
yeah i agree, but its not as bad as the GM 2007 SUV that was released on december 10th 2006...
#4.2 Troll on 25 Jan 2006 - 17:36
Are you kidding me?

Car companies have always done this. They release the model for the following year in September-October or so. Expect 2007 models to come out around that time frame this year.

And I'll assume you meant 2006 SUV released on December 10th, 2005, since we haven't got to December 10th 2006 yet
#4.3 scsgoal31 on 25 Jan 2006 - 19:30
Actually he probably meant that the 2007 GMC was introduced on Dec 10 of 2005. Two years apart there...that was indeed different

Is Office 12 in beta testing? Could find any information on it being tested...
#5.1 one321 on 25 Jan 2006 - 15:38
I am beta testing Office 12. When I saw the heading, I was hoping it said something about a beta2 refresh. I am pretty good at crashing beta1.
#5.2 Adaytay on 26 Jan 2006 - 11:12
Ditto... to be expected though really, first stage beta and all...

But then, that could be because my machine is pants, too.

looks to be that exchange 12 will be 64bit only aswell
#6.1 Gibwar on 25 Jan 2006 - 15:38
Yup, that'll be a nice move, more performance and whatnot by moving that huge app to x64!

#7.1 Express on 25 Jan 2006 - 15:41
And SQL server 2005 was released in Dec 2005.
#7.2 Ideas Man on 25 Jan 2006 - 16:24
SQL Server was released in November the 7th I think (or 8th), it was released at the same time as VS2005.

The new office logo can be seen at http://tc4.iponet.net/ (it's similar to what they've done with the Windows logo). And the blue-green logo was also MS ppl's logo (like the Longhorn logo remember?)
#9 strekship on 25 Jan 2006 - 16:38
Does this mean that beta testers will be getting a new build soon?
#10 smashguy on 25 Jan 2006 - 19:16
Remembered: Office 2002 was rebranded Office XP at released dates and Office 2007 may get a new name too
(3 replies) #11 McG on 25 Jan 2006 - 19:31
Actually, it's been Microsoft Office Word and Microsoft Office Excel--etc. since 2003.
#11.1 Nexx295 on 25 Jan 2006 - 20:29
I see Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, etc. in all Office 2003 applications.
#11.2 Jeremy1 on 25 Jan 2006 - 21:47
The only place you'll see the lack of the word "Office" in 2003 is in the title bar. The shortcuts in the Start menu as well as the About boxes all say Microsoft Office [Program Name].
#11.3 ~*McoreD*~ on 26 Jan 2006 - 00:50
Yes you are right. I was wondering about that too. It's been called Office Word Office Excel since version 2003.
#12 SpyCatcher on 25 Jan 2006 - 19:38
When is office 2007 scheduled to be released?
#13 jhatcher16 on 25 Jan 2006 - 19:46
around the same time as Vista...august ()/ october this year
(1 reply) #14 Hills420 on 25 Jan 2006 - 20:28
So they go from Office 95 to 97 to 2000 to 2002(XP) to 2003 now 2007? Very original.
#14.1 Jeremy1 on 25 Jan 2006 - 21:52
Why did they have to come up with an "original" name for Office 12? Change just for the sake of change is rarely a good thing...
#15 osirisX on 25 Jan 2006 - 22:10
Meh... nothing special. Also nothing to whinge over. Microsoft Office 2007 sounds professional.
#16 wutang01 on 25 Jan 2006 - 23:32
Office 12 would have improved handwriting recognition etc etc for Tablet PCs right?
#17 Mr. Dee on 26 Jan 2006 - 00:36
Microsoft has never used code names or version numbers for Office (except for Office for Mac and Office 4.2 for Windows and below), so all of you stop your whining!
#18 multimediatechy on 26 Jan 2006 - 01:12
They like to stick to what the public is used to (i.e. office 2003, then office 2007). The general public would be like whats this 012? And the current logo shown above clashes and doesn't work for me in a professional suite like Office.

Remember, Office 2006 will be the Mac's version name (and hopefully universal) so that's already taken.
#19.1 Neowave on 26 Jan 2006 - 11:04
Where does it say that?

At this years Keynote a Microsoft representative said that Mac OS X users can expect updates for Microsoft Office 2004 and Microsoft Messenger 5 in March. But the real new universal versions will take longer.

My guess is Microsoft Office 2004 and Messenger 5 will never become Universal and that Intel Mac users have to wait until a new mayor version of both software titles have been released. I don't really see that happening before 2007 te be honest.

So the next version will probably be called "Microsoft Office 2008". Almost all Office:mac versions have been one number up from their Windows counterparts:

Windows:
Office 2000
Office XP
Office 2003

Mac OS X:
Office 2001
Office X
Office 2004
#19.2 Mr. Dee on 26 Jan 2006 - 15:25
I would agree with Neowave, and major reason why a Universal version will take a long time to reach market is Virtual PC for Mac. The VPC Team for Mac was caught by surprised when Steve Jobs announced the Intel transition, their code was written in Code Warrior which is more difficult than Cocoa to recompile for Intel. So lots of work on their hands.
#20 CrisCr0ss on 26 Jan 2006 - 05:45
i dun mind the name, as long as it functions well and isnt bloated ill use it
#21 cpugeni on 26 Jan 2006 - 11:06
The naming of the product is all down to marketing - a customer can easily identify the software's age if its named Office 2007...

4yr gap between office versions, jeez those developers have been slacking lol

WHO CARES! They have closed the site now.

I think it should be WindowsAmerica, and Office America and tell the EU to stick it.
