The voice-activated in-car communication system, based on Windows Mobile for Automotive, will debut at the 2006 Geneva Motorshow.

Fiat and Microsoft will launch Blue&Me based on Windows Mobile for Automotive at the 2006 Geneva Motorshow later this month, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of in-car communication, infotainment and entertainment systems and providing all vehicles in the Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Fiat Commercial Vehicle ranges with a competitive advantage.

Blue&Me will be the first product seen from the long-term strategic partnership inked in July 2004 with the objective of co-designing innovative automotive telematics systems. The system will exclusively be available on new Fiat and Alfa Romeo cars as well as on Fiat Light Commercial Vehicles. The Grande Punto, Alfa Romeo 159, 159 Sportwagon, Brera and Spider will be equipped this from the middle of this year, followed by the other models of Fiat Auto's product range.

LOL..

FIAT combining with Microsoft? Is this some sort of gag? FIAT have a reputation for producing unreliable cars and Microsoft (whichever way you look at it) have a reputation for producing an unreliable OS. It certainly doesn't sound like a match made in heaven!

Oh FFS, what's wrong with people like you whenever an article about Microsoft and automotive appears? Some of you people need to grow up and stop living in 1998, when these jokes may have had some relevance.

Windows XP has NEVER BSoDed on me, only ever seen it happen on other computers, and the cause was always poorly written drivers, so if the best argument you can make is the stupidly ridiculous BSoD one, then honestly, you should just give up now, it's pathetic, and it shows the total lack of knowledge/skill you possess when it comes to computers/technology.

The lame car requiring a reboot etc. jokes, don't you honestly think they've run their course? How desperate for attention must you be to post a joke that isn't funny, and hasn't been for years???

Maybe you were supposed to reply to the post below, but incase you didn't know, Windows ME did BSoD ALOT!

I don't remember reading anything about XP in MY previous post.

Remember this?
If GM had developed technology like Microsoft:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally, your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would accept this, restart, and drive on.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart; in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

And so on...

I guess FIAT didn't get that newsletter. :-p

Forgot a few....

5. Before the airbag deploys, it asks, "Are you sure?"
6. The Oil, gas, and temperature gauges are replaced by a single "General Car Fault" warning light.
7. When you call the service department, they will tell you it's not their fault and blame it on the company that made the gas cap.
8. Apple makes a car that's faster, more reliable, and easier to drive, but it will only run on five percent of the roads.
9. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car locks you out and refuses to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key, and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Seriously though, as a former MS employee, I wouldn't trust the safety of myself or my family with anything that comes out of Redmond. Let's just hope this doesn't spill over into anything other than in-car communication and entertainment systems.

seriously ... i hope u people have a reason for saying all this cwap because lately microsoft has been improving stability (well from my POV) - I don't remember the last time Xp crashed :/

also their Mobile OS isn't that bad either.

I'm sure Microsoft just built a fake windows mobile shell on top of unix for this one just to make sure nothing bad would happen

This is for a handsfree cel phone that's built into the car, essentialy. You can't drive the car with it, so for all you idiots that are saying "Windows Crash, Me Troll, Micosuck" go soak your head.

Hands-free phone (really why would most people need it) or not (what was wrong with the simple CD player - even it can offer enough distractions), I would rather have computer components and technology coming from tried and true 100% reliabe technology (Bosch makes most of the braking systems in todays cars, they work and don't crash, but I wouldn't want to drive a car with a Microsoft "Windows Mobile for Automotive" system controlling the brakes or airbags). Just look at NASA. In their space probes they use techonlogy that is 15 years+ because it is the most reliable and doesn't contain so many things to go wrong. And even then things can still fail. So: Windows Mobile for Automotive - what's the point?
