Cable company NTL will be trialling a new service in March. In partnership with Arris and BitTorrent the trial will take place in Ashford, Kent. The 100Mb speed will be 10 times the highest speed offered by NTL at the moment.

NTL aren’t just offering this speed increase out of the goodness of their hearts, the bosses at NTL have been working hard over the past few months, with a takeover of Telewest broadband currently taking place and a proposed bid for Virgin Mobile. This move will add another direction to their plans. With a 100Mb service HD videos will be readily available, and with the support of BitTorrent these can easily be shared, with appropriate licenses of course.

A 100Mb service will mean that the UK will finally compete with the rest of the world in terms of high speed broadband, with countries in Europe and Asia offering speeds of 10Mb or higher years ago. It will also be a huge push for HD technology in the next year, with on demand movies available and the possibility of a service that could rival Sky’s ‘Sky+’ package.

It’s definitely a rollercoaster of a time at NTL at the moment, just a fortnight ago broadband users around the country were subject to regular cuts in their service and there have been frustrated calls from users disappointed with their new 10Mb connection. One things for sure though, when a 100Mb service becomes available speed enthusiasts will be queuing up to put pen to paper.

#1.1 Ashl on 13 Feb 2006 - 08:12
Great lol, I live too fat from my exchange so i'm limited to a 1 MB connection..

I bet there is no chance of getting any faster for years as there is no cable and I can't imagine my exchange is going to be put on some fast speed anytime soon.
#1.2 sputnike on 13 Feb 2006 - 18:41
Lol, I knew about 100 Meg broadband in June 2003... I even posted a message on my site. Basically I met this person on a train to London (I was sitting next to him and I was bored) and he was using a laptop, and didn't know how to do something, he was searching help files...etc so anyway I told him how to do it. He then said to me "so you know alot about computers then huh?" so I said yes... so blah blah blah we got into a conversation and then he told me that he was a consultant for British Telecom, and he told me that they were trialing 100 Meg broadband in certain exchanges accross the country. Well he told me that they plan to introduce it in 2007, and having everyone who has a broadband exchange within 5 miles of them, they can have 100meg broadband by 2009. So everyone will be using 100 meg broadband very soon. I waited 5 years for 512 broadband, I am sure I can just wait another 3 years.

Well thats my comment anyway

Anyone know what would be the upload speed?
#2.1 BBinder on 13 Feb 2006 - 09:43
bleh they'll probably stick with 256k up
(2 replies) #3 frogworm on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:09
marketing at its best even on Neowin. 100mbit will mean maybe 1mbit upload speed
#3.1 rm20010 on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:27
Hey, I'd be grateful even for 1 Mb upload speed. Over here in the land of polar bears and igloos we're confined to about 5-10 Mbps max. But that's the consequence of living in nations with huge land areas.
#3.2 faraaz on 13 Feb 2006 - 04:24
i already have 1 Mb upload speed with a 6 Mb download speed. I think this 100Mb d/l would have at least a 20 Mb upload
(8 replies) #4 lylesback2 on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:11
sucks canada's maximum speed is 6mbps
#4.1 slimy on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:19
Amen to that, and I've only got 3
#4.2 Napalm Frog on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:20
actually, I think it might be Bell (or was it Rogers?) I dunno, but there will be a 12MB service up shortly. It is already in experimentation in onse small area of Toronto that starts with an S... not Scarbororough, but something obscure. check out the Bell Sympatico forums on www.dslreport.com. That's where I came across this.
#4.3 RAINMAN on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:23
well I only have 1.5mb even though I subscribe to a higher service. I am too far away they tell me. I'm in the middle of a city. Maybe they should work on upgrading their existing network.
#4.4 zivan56 on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:23
Actually there is 10Mbit thats costs less than Shaw or Telus 5Mbit, its called Novus. The only downside is its only in Yaletown and nearby areas of downtown Vancouver where they have fibre.
#4.5 MajinDark on 13 Feb 2006 - 01:55
Canada's max isn't 6 Mbps. I have Shaw and my connection maxes out at 8 Mbps.
#4.6 travis.cd on 13 Feb 2006 - 03:45
i have shaw too, 7mbps..
#4.7 faraaz on 13 Feb 2006 - 04:26
theres one in Aurora ON that goes at 9, and im < 1 km out of their coverage area
#4.8 astrofaes on 14 Feb 2006 - 13:38
I wish I were still in Canada <sigh> :-/
#5 trevor18 on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:13
i can only get 2MB ADSL here too
I want 100Mb...well 4,8,10,12 whatever would be nice!
#6 NegaC on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:15
I have 1Mb. Woe is me.
#7 MNS on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:15
goody. and here's me on my 768/512kbps ADSL line thinking i've got it made.
#8 Sierra Sonic on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:16
Im happy for having 1/10 of that.

What is the point of 100mbit with a download cap of 30GB (10mbit has a cap of 30, the reason why im still on the 2mbit)

Cant wait until bulldog come to my area 8mbit connection with no limits

NTL Suck
#9.1 Samurai-HQ on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:54
Well.. I used to be with NTL and can safely say they're one of the worst ISP's ever.

I'm with Bulldog now, and after a shaky start, I haven't had any problems. Once you're setup (for which BD DO drag their heels over) you get fluid speeds, and best of all ZERO CAPS!!

I download an average of 400-500GB a month on newsgroups, and can assure everyone on here I'd rather have my 8MB DSL with no caps than 100MB with a monthly limit and blocked ports.
#9.2 itaniumx86 on 13 Feb 2006 - 04:04
Oh, good, if you get 120GB monthly DL quota, heres what you really get:

2Hours 44Minutes and 24seconds of full downstream

That means if you start DLin at full speed (anything) you'll have your
great 120GB cap done in 2:44:24h, great isnt it?
I just love the way they advertise it.

ps: i know there's no such 100% efficiency, give it 4 hours at most.
#9.3 Chanser on 13 Feb 2006 - 06:37
I doubt you'll able to max out 100mbit, pretty hard to find download servers with those kind of speeds.
#9.4 lerum on 13 Feb 2006 - 09:54
I can download a 4GB linux DVD in 11 minutes Thats @ about 6mb/s
#9.5 Nitrate on 13 Feb 2006 - 10:15
Actually the ntl 10Mb/s has a 75GB a month cap, and the 2MB and 1MB are now uncapped since the new year.
#9.6 snappyfool on 13 Feb 2006 - 12:13
that's still the worst idea ever, to cap a 10mb service to 75gb. my dad has an 8mb ADSL connection with a 500gb cap, i think it may be unlimited now. the only thing is the service he recieves is more like 5mb due to line quality.

at uni, i get 2-10mb speed - with one problem.. no p2p :'(

#9.7 |Maxim| on 13 Feb 2006 - 14:53
snappyfool: you should come to Australia, i get 10mbit with 10,000MB worth of transfers (uploads count!
#9.8 coandco on 13 Feb 2006 - 20:05
Heh. Or come to LeTourneau University, where they've recently upgraded their connection to 40Mb... and instituted a 3GB cap. This at a technical school

#10 Joel Ogden on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:37
way to get my hopes up. I live in ashford... middlesex, not kent
#11 Orange on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:44
One thing them saying this but another doing the service well.
I'm on 10MB NTL and service can be abit crap at times.
(1 reply) #12 jivemastert on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:44
I have 15mb/s down and 2mb/s up... Going to be 30 down soon though when the new service is available in my area.
#12.1 jadkins555 on 13 Feb 2006 - 03:38
What's the point? I have the 15mb/s down 2mb/s up as well, and things aren't that much faster than my old 5mb/s down 768kb/sec up connection. Most sites cap off well below our own cap. It really won't be beneficial for a while.
#13 hotdog963al on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:49
I can't get more than 2Mbps in my area.
God damnit

I want a upload speed increase! My server sucks ass at 32KB/s (256kbps)
(1 reply) #14 timmmay on 13 Feb 2006 - 00:49
12mb adsl has just been introduced (some companies claim up to 24mb, but i'm not so sure about that! but is only offered to people who bundle with the phone company (bit of a ripoff if u ask me)...so for the average joe it's 1500/256 max!

cable on the other hand can go up to 11mb
#14.1 qwin on 13 Feb 2006 - 12:47
24 MEG Kicks ASS AND ITS ONLY £24 squid, thats i meg for a pound, YES A POUND

#16 xSuRgEx on 13 Feb 2006 - 02:07
i hope the take over doesent meen that us telewest customers now have to suffer the customer service that NTHELL provide there customers.

so prehaps this is us TW customers who are on there 2mb service, got an email from TW inviteing us to try there 4mb service for 3 months at £17.00

TW are prepareing us for the end of good customer service.

here in Saudi Arabia ,,, the max we can get is 512kb .... and it has just started weeks ago ... our max was 256kb DSL =____= .... and guess what !! ... we pay 160$ per month for the 512kb T_T
#17.1 Radium on 13 Feb 2006 - 02:33
160 US dollars?! That's theft!
#17.2 itaniumx86 on 13 Feb 2006 - 04:00
thats a sad reality when they're starting... hope there's some biz competition there
as the consumer always win that fight (most times)

#17.3 EddieZ on 13 Feb 2006 - 07:59
No theft...other standards. No tax, almost free fuel. Got to spend your wages someway :-)
#18 ManMountain on 13 Feb 2006 - 02:32
With the 75GB cap per month on the 10Mbit service, it makes you wonder what ridiculous cap will be in place when NTL do eventually get round to distributing the 100Mbit service to all of the UK.

With Bulldog / UKOnlines 8-22Mbit uncapped unlimited DSL usage, NTL can blow their trumpet all they want about offering the fastest service.

With such ludicrous "usage allowance" caps in place, what the hell's the point in using NTL's 10-100Mbit?
#19 lethalman on 13 Feb 2006 - 02:54
im on ntl 10mb when i do speed tests its just 7mb all the time thare is a good site for ntl users i post if i can best ntl speed test ever http://forums.ntlhell.co.uk/ go to free speed test.

#20.1 Sub on 13 Feb 2006 - 03:04
The US is screwed right now in terms of bandwidth. We have our major telcos scamming 200 Billion from the tax payers in a huge broadband scandle.
(1 reply) #21 drews on 13 Feb 2006 - 03:46
They are talking about using BitTorrent to distribute HD quality videos, they way BT works they might give users more upload so they can "share" the bandwidth.
#21.1 itaniumx86 on 13 Feb 2006 - 03:59
or have a 20gbit master server and all users with 250kbps, more than enough (LMFAAAO)
#22 saud264 on 13 Feb 2006 - 05:15

maximum speed in my ALL my country is

512K/B
#23 ziper on 13 Feb 2006 - 06:51
We have 100mbit in sweden and we have had it for like 2 years now. Next step here is kinda 1gbit and it's already being offered at special locations.
#24 LG1 on 13 Feb 2006 - 07:11
I only get 1.5 mb, i would be happy with 8. 12. 24 would be great
#25 EddieZ on 13 Feb 2006 - 08:02
Not as fast as Sweden, but nice to play with: 12 mbit thru ADSL (3 km from provider). And steady. And only Euro 79 a month!
(1 reply) #26 SweWiLLiE on 13 Feb 2006 - 08:34
Yeah, this is Sweden like 7-8 years ago.
#26.1 Jugalator on 18 Feb 2006 - 21:15
Maybe 100 mbps fibre optic lines, but not to customers.

Go back about 2-4 years or so for that.
(1 reply) #27 dpeters on 13 Feb 2006 - 09:31
1mb is fine for me..
#27.1 toadeater on 13 Feb 2006 - 22:37
Yes, steady service is better than high latency and frequent disconnects. There is nothing to do with 100Mbit on the internet yet for any sane home user that is not involved in organized crime. Broadband providers should focus on quality of service and a speed of 10Mbit or maybe 5Mbit symmetric for now, which the existing infrastructure should be able to handle. Meanwhile, they should start working on all-fiber networks and wireless, no more Copper Age foolishness.

But are they going to do this? Ofcourse not. The government needs to get involved. The broadband monopolies are pure evil.
#28 minnow_trap on 13 Feb 2006 - 09:34
As long as they don't get any ideas from Comcast or any other U.S cable company. We offer 100mbps download, but cap the upload at 128kpbs. (LOL) Because according to Comcast, noone ever uploads that much content to the internet according to their emails I used to recieve from them. Anotherwords, instead of using the we treat you like children emails, why don't they simply tell everyone that they don't want them using FTP servers on their service? It just nagged me, because I remember the transition from TCI cable company to AT&T, then Comcast, and AT&T said they didn't want people sending mass data files over their email servers. But then, you would recieve another email stating to send the files over FTP. LOL, they could never make up their damn minds.

I heard of a small company SWITCHPOINT (If I remember that was the name), with a DSDN broadband internet that they were supposed to deploy in or near the city of (Denver, CO) a few years back. I had a friend that lived close to Denver, and that he signed up for this service that supposedly had a 100mbps up & down symmetrical connection. I havn't heard from him in a few years now, and I was wondering if anyone here might have heard of this?

I believe it was SWITCHPOINT in or near Denver, CO. I tried to pull up the website, but it seems that it is no longer availible, unless they switched the name or something.
#29 mrk on 13 Feb 2006 - 09:41
Hmm, gonna have to upgrade my Wireless 54G to Wireless-N by the end of the year!
(1 reply) #30 Dirtie on 13 Feb 2006 - 09:59
Much better than the monopoly we have going down here in New Zealand - details on new plans were just released, and they're still incredibly slow and outrageously expensive. Hardly a marginal improvement over what we have now.

Yea just heard about this on TV, You know what Telecom can go shuv there plan's up there usb port.

I hate them, OH WIPDO DOO from 2mB to 3.5mB OH MY GOD OH WOW

#31 Cy Bones on 13 Feb 2006 - 10:42
I live in Ashford, Kent - where do I sign up??? I have only just switched to NTL and have had nothing but problems with their (lack of) customer service... This may go a little to making it up!

I couldn't find anything about this on their website - any idea on where it is?
#32 PENGUINwithM4A1 on 13 Feb 2006 - 11:06
Well good for them giving other people faster internet, but where i live i can only get 512kbs and BT show very little sign of upping that
#33 lunamonkey on 13 Feb 2006 - 11:21
I must have had good luck then with NTL.

Customer service has always been great, and I only ever had to reboot my modem when I was downloading torrents at about 500KBps a couple of times. I guess I choked it.

Works fine after a reboot, and never had problems when on 1mb or 2mb service.

There are teething problems with the 10mb service. but seems to be fine at the moment.

Go NTL (y)

As my new Family Guy t-shirt says...

FREAKING SWEET!
#35 shirike on 13 Feb 2006 - 12:13
I wish they'd invest more in getting good speeds to lots of users rather than insane speeds to a few users.
#36 qwin on 13 Feb 2006 - 12:41
ha i can only get, 1mb DSL at the moment cause i live in the middle of nowhere... Dammit...
I think that they should test these services out in more rural areas, cuase they already know its going to work in the big cities.
#37 divadiow on 13 Feb 2006 - 13:11
ADSL 2+ won't be too long, tie me over for a bit I guess.

2mb/256k here on the IOW. SDSL rollout halted just before our exchange was done!

#38 sgr55 on 13 Feb 2006 - 13:12
I have 2mbit atm. Getting 4mbit in April sometime with any luck but it'll be years after that b4 i see a speed upgrade unless i move becuase my line will only support 4~5

BT's problem is the line length. Its not really that easy to provider 1~2mbit + on lines that are 5+KM long. They do have plans of mini DSLAMS in Street Cabs but this will be mega expensive and rollout will be slow. i would imageing they will need to upgrade some copper to fiber as well. There working on a cable networks thats been in place for decades and it just isnt capible of high speeds until either mini dslams or fiber to the street cab comes along

100Mbit would be sweet but with NTL it will probabily be quite poor.
#39 Allan® on 13 Feb 2006 - 14:10
You lucky dogs! My local cable company (and the local Tele companies) refuse to provide anything over 3mb, althought, they do claim it's "IN THE WORKS". ... however, I will have local VOiP by the end of July they promise. Meh ... I want faster speeds TODAY, and VOiP from them in a yr !!!!
#40 Noveed on 13 Feb 2006 - 16:12
Wohooo im with NTL, 10mb at the Mo .... Cant wait for 100MB :woot: hehehehe NTL PWNZ
(1 reply) #41 xavalon on 13 Feb 2006 - 18:40
Grin, reading it, I have a very good deal.

I have a 20MB down, 2 MB up cable internet connection, and telephone subscription with free national evening and weekend calls for ... euro 59,95 / month (package deal).

No official download limit, only Fair Usage Policy which is about 80GB a month before getting email request to stop excessive downloads in rush hours. If you don't comply, they could lower your connection to about 128kb for the rest of the month.

That is in the Netherlands. Several cable companies also offering 80 & 100MB cable Internet connections, but only to companies so far.
#41.1 jn1167 on 15 Feb 2006 - 14:55
I just upgraded myself to a 30MB down and 2MB up connection with Optimum Online. The speed is amazing. Im in New York and there are no limits to anything lol.
