AMD's new CPU socket, AM2, will launch at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan this June. The first AM2 motherboards will be on display at the European CeBIT show this March.

Socket AM2's initial "F" stepping will mark AMD's leap to DDR2 and allow for higher clock frequencies over current Socket 939 processors. While it is a 940-pin configuration manufactured under a 90nm process, its pin layout is not compatible with current Opteron and FX 940-pin processors.

The two launch processors will be the dual core 5000+ and FX-62, running at 2.6GHz and 2.8GHz respectively. The new processors are equipped with 1MB L2 cache per core, much like current Toledo core dual-core processors. While Intel has chosen a new branding for its new processor lines AMD has chosen to retain the Athlon 64 X2 name despite the architectural changes.

A lot of technical information is available at X-bit labs, so head on over there to read more.

#1.1 cheesegoduk on 16 Feb 2006 - 16:57
haha same, just brought a 3800dual core.
Oh well If we all waited, none of us would ever have pc's
#2 itaniumx86 on 16 Feb 2006 - 16:46
hope intel implements in-chip memory controller 1 day...
#3 vetvoidunknown on 16 Feb 2006 - 17:09
Well, looks like I'll have to get the 5000+ in a few months... I'll have to find someone to take my 4400+ and DDR500.
#4 Chew on 16 Feb 2006 - 17:20
Thank god I waited lol I was just pricing out new components last night.
Hopefully by that time we'll have news on new chipsets from nvidia, then I can really blow some green lol
#5 _tux_ on 16 Feb 2006 - 17:20
any idea on the price of them? (in £GBP)
#6 Croquant on 16 Feb 2006 - 17:21
Great! I've been waiting for this anouncement. Summer of AM2, here we come!
#7 SoLiD_MasteR on 16 Feb 2006 - 17:24
daym ! gimme one

I'll wait until there is this new socket, new nVidia chipset to go with it, new video card from nVidia, and then I'll upgrade!
#8.1 beniza on 16 Feb 2006 - 23:15
i agree to you
#9 Chugworth on 16 Feb 2006 - 18:18
Well I was thinking about waiting for nVidia's next generation of cards before I upgraded to AM2. But since my 6800 GT is already PCI Express, I might just go ahead and get AM2 when it is launched.

AWESOME!!! BWAHAHAHAH!! *Fire rises from behind throne of death*

This sucks i just upgraded my cpu and graphics card now i hear this news.
My money down the drain.
#11.1 dhitb on 17 Feb 2006 - 03:21
Money down the drain would be buying M2 this year along with new memory that will become more and more expensive now that the makers are not under scrutiny for price fixing. M2 will not significantly outperform 939 until well into next year. That is unless AMD has to scramble to respond to Intel's counterparts this year.

Also if you overclock, it would be wise to wait out a few memory contoller revisions.

So we will only have a 5000+? Thats a bit of suckage. Wonder when the 3800+'s will come along.

from dailytech.com

theres more than just 2 CPU's being released on june 6th

my question is which will perform better for gaming the 3800 single or dual core? and will those two be priced similary?
#13 tiwaris on 16 Feb 2006 - 23:09
When will AMD go 65 nm.
They still have 2x1MB cache. They should switch to 2x2MB cache.
I read somewhere that 3GHz optersons are about to debut. Why don't they release 3GHz models as well (both for X2 and FX line).

And, yes AM2 will support DDR2 800 MHz memory.

I still find it crazy that AMD has been totally killing Intel on the processor front, and they haven't even hit the 3 Ghz mark on any of their processors yet.
#14.1 epitrochoid on 20 Feb 2006 - 14:21

Thats because clock speed has very little to do with anything. Fill your crap designed architecture with pipelines and you can clock it as fast as you like. AMD just has a better platform at the moment.

what june..!! they said january/feb last august..!! bah my 3500 is too slow ..!! i was thinking of upgrading to AM2 by easter- but it dont look like its gonna happen.. might as well get a 4400+ (since its best value for money) for now and then come december jump to the am2 socket boards..
#15.1 sigloiv on 16 Feb 2006 - 23:29
Just keep your 3500 till June. My XP 2800+ still runs perfectly fine.
#15.2 Elite_graphix on 16 Feb 2006 - 23:41
could do.. but i do ALOT of multitasking.. and the whole system just feels soo slugish.. even trying to websurf and watch a hdtv 1920res movie is horrible..

games are abosolutely fine- its mainly applications which tend to slow down.. and looking at purchasing am2 socket processors would at june would involve sky high prices.. so i'd rather wait till nov/dec when prices have kinda dropped.. and v2 am2 motherboard revisions are relased with all the bugs sorted out..

#16.3 2xSilverKnight on 17 Feb 2006 - 02:55
ahah no comment .. you need ..
#17 wutang01 on 17 Feb 2006 - 00:46
Awesome. June 6th ... in my calendar now
So after the 'Windsor' CPU ...
#18 tiwaris on 17 Feb 2006 - 05:50
FX 62 may have 2x2=4MB cache.
#19 Göran on 17 Feb 2006 - 06:34
Well, I woudn't shout victory just yet. Intel Conroe processor looks to be far ahead of this if you ask me. There is many reasons to be concerned it this point. An Conroe with 1333 bus and 3.33GHz core with 1:5 performance/watt at 95 watt looks to eat AMD.
