Just desktop. At least that's all I have listed on Connect for me.
#9.2 sphbecker on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:40
There is no Vista server. The Windows Server codenamed Longhorn will not be released until next year.

(1 reply) #15 xxhiroshi21xx on 22 Feb 2006 - 18:59
Yeah actually it went down for the most of us, unfortunatly the guys who hit refresh every ten seconds will get the builds first and install them, then post screenshots and spoil the fun for the rest of us testers who got caught on the other side of the internet plug that hit connect.
#15.1 f00kie on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:03
Well, it's going at 0.5 KB/sec for me.

Edit: nm, full 125 KB/sec.
#16 neufuse on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:04
finally staged builds.. these are the ones that should install in under 20 minutes to desktop
#17 thenay on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:05
I'm assuming this is the new build
#18 andy2004 on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:10
doesnt appear for me on connect ffs microsoft let me test this will ya
(1 reply) #19 archibald on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:12
so is this "vista enterprise", as in no MCE, no tablet, but lots of boring enterprise stuff?!?!
or is this still the vista ultimate, as it was til now?!
#19.1 neufuse on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:18
enterprise is the ultimate edition under VLK keys..... it has EVERYTHING! It's what we've been testing this whole time
(1 reply) #20 simeandrews on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:22
Jeez. I take half an hour to install Kubuntu, and suddenly Vista is feature complete.

I don't have MS Connect or MSDN anyway though, so it doesn't make much of a difference.

So this has the sidebar, right? If it doesn't, then Microsoft isn't including it in Vista anymore.
#20.1 Sn4k36 on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:30
Yep it has the sidebar.. But i wish they wouldn't include because it sidebar reminds me of back in early 2000 and 2001 when everyone was using the shell replacements.. So now a days the sidebar is dead in 75% of the themes that are out there now.
#21 TexDeafy on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:30
I don't have any invitation from MS Connection

http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,12...97&po=11,00.asp - isn't that performance rating way too low?
#26.1 xxhiroshi21xx on 22 Feb 2006 - 19:54
Um. this is a beta.. its stated that its not even beta quality.
#26.2 Hurmoth on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:14
You're right, this system should be rated at a 3.38. Adding all those up (16.9) and dividing by 5 comes out to be 3.38. But then again it is beta, so hopefully this will be fixed before RTM.
#26.3 XerXis on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:24
who says the values are not weighted? if that is the case the result is still wrong, but taking the average could be to simple
#26.4 sphbecker on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:58
That is a pretty weak graphics card and processor; and considering those are the two most important aspects of gaming I would say a 2 is about right.
(2 replies) #27 divertom15 on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:08
Its not feature complete It doesnt yet have Desktop Aurora or Pixel shader glass (which is comming btw)
#27.1 Hurmoth on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:15
In the conference call today, Microsoft confirmed that this build is feature complete!
#27.2 sphbecker on 22 Feb 2006 - 23:04
Feature complete is kind of in the eye of the beholder. From what I have learned from watching interviews with Microsoft, when they call something feature complete it means that product contains all of the features/programs they plan to add. However, Windows isn't just one product; it is a combination of many different things. It could be considered feature complete just because it has a working copy of the new backup program, that doesn't mean the backup program its self is feature complete yet. Aero is the same way; it is a product to its self.
#28 manne on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:11
Downloading as we speak at 650KB/sec
took a while before I could get in at connect though
looking forward to install this later
#29 kevpan815 on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:24
Hey Guys, the January FTM Release has just been Updated to the Febuary FTM Release!
Make absolutely sure that you have the Febuary FTM Release, before you attempt to download Windows Vista Febuary CTP!
#30 ajdee2 on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:37
hi is it same CD Install key to this new build 5308 some 5270 ??
#31 MightyJordan on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:40
I have a question. Where on Microsoft Connect is it? I've looked on the Available Programs page but it isn't there.
(1 reply) #32 scrutman on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:42
does this build have the much anticipated upgrade feature built in?? and I am a little bit lost at the comment regarding a FTM release...what is that for...
If I download the CTP by itself and do not have the FTM installed when installing the CTP, what will happen...is it needed?

I am looking forward to this...
Anyone have this installed yet? How long for the install? How is the stability and any perfromance issues?
#32.1 kevpan815 on 22 Feb 2006 - 21:43
FTM = Microsoft File Transfer Manager.
#33 chorpeac on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:57
hmmm...should I waste the time and install it again...or wait for the next beta...hmmm...decisions decisions
(1 reply) #34 MightyJordan on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:58
Can someone PLEASE tell me where it is? And please be precise.
#34.1 jwjw1 on 22 Feb 2006 - 21:12
First of all...you have to be a legit Vista Beta tester...and it will be listed on your active programs...and its in that programs download section..

Holy titlebar bloat, Batman!

http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,12...97&po=40,00.asp

Seems like a problem with "wizard" screens. I'd be fine with it if they made the title font bigger, but that just looks crazy. It's kind of the same problem with Explorer windows:
http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,12...97&po=47,00.asp

Don't you think they could just put the minimize, restore, and close buttons right next to the search bar?
#35.1 chrisxtreme on 22 Feb 2006 - 21:09
I hate this also, I have yet to find out of it's meant to be like this (a feature) or a bug.
#35.2 Dragular on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:21
You need a place to drag the window from, no? Or a place to put the title. Think iy out.
#35.3 Enu on 22 Feb 2006 - 23:06
I think there's plenty of space to drag - above or below the address and search bars, or under the close button.
#35.4 Dragular on 23 Feb 2006 - 00:18
Not enough for me, I don't want to take aim every time I want to move a window, just do it. Yes it would look nicer but it wouldn't be worth it in terms of usability
#35.5 theyarecomingforyou on 23 Feb 2006 - 03:00
That is far too much space... it should be more like this screenshot:

http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,12...97&po=46,00.asp

I hope they work out all the little things like this, as it's all the little things that make something great.
#36 andrewhaji on 22 Feb 2006 - 21:06
Does anyone know if they've FINALLY managed to fix that stupid ATI X800 XL AGP issue?
#37 scrutman on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:00
does this build have more support for applications such as windows live messenger 8 and windows onecare...
also my fingerprint reader never worked on the last build but I m hoping for better success on this one...
any thoughts on this...
I think we should have a seperate section on the forum just for application compatibility

Did anyone else receive another invitation for Vista tonight? I did at 22:02 UK time :s

Erm...
#38.1 quick on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:14
Send it over here
#38.2 Nexx295 on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:24
I received it too, but I was in already. They send it to the Media Center testers who might not be in the Vista beta program. I guess you can ignore it.

Edit: Please stop PMing me. I won't send the invitation to anybody.

Where does one apply? The MS Connect site doesn't even list Vista as available program...and I'm dying to get in! Well, not dying. Just laying on the floor in a fetal position while sucking my thumb. How do I sign up?

I dont think you can sign up and see if you get invited. In order to be in the Vista beta, you have to either be very closely related or partnered with Microsoft, a devoloper, or some (legal) way get in that involves knowing someone with power.

"Deployment Costs Go down
Secure and compliant desktop
Connecting people to information
Increasing mobile and remote productivity"

I just have to laugh at these empty marketing sentences.

Compliant desktop? What's that? Connecting people to information? What feature do you mean with that exactly, and if it's new, it's interesting XP doesn't do this? Increasing remote productivity? What do you mean and how? I'm sure there may actually be features hiding behind these claims, but then it would be much nicer if these were translated to major new features instead of marketing abstracts. It just looks a bit silly to me to have empty marketing babble for a preview release. It's not like they're supposed to sell the release anyway.
#40.1 Chicane-UK on 23 Feb 2006 - 08:53
I think that bascially means that there really aren't any new stand out features and that they have to rely on marketing BS to try and sell it. I mean reading the press release about Halo2 being a Vista exclusive sealed that one.. I counted the 'bringing clarity to your world' about 3 times in that single press release!

I'll definately try Vista - I want Microsoft to prove my scepticism wrong, but I don't think it'll be that exciting to be honest.
#41 obiwankenobi on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:39
erm....I've been trying to get my hands on this one all day, but it seems that connect's servers are hammered at the moment....well, at least for me, anyway.
(1 reply) #42 mayamaniac on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:43
seems a bit more refined than previous betas, as expected. Whats that last screenshot mean by "Windows Media Player 11 Taskbar With Toast"?

Someone get this baby installed and post bigger screenshots.
#42.1 DCMonkey on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:55
WMP 9, 10, and 11 have the ability to minimize to a miniplayer on the taskbar. the toast showing the artist and track pops up when you hover the mouse over the miniplayer. The previous CTP version of WMP11 rendered using the old XPish theme but this one now renders using the glass efffect.
#43 chopyaedoff on 22 Feb 2006 - 22:56
Has anyone got this installed yet - it's been 4 hours now!
#44 Greasy on 22 Feb 2006 - 23:14
