According to many industry analysts and rumours posted to our Forums the Feb CTP is due today.

With a build tag expected to be 5308.x86fre.winmain_idx01.060217-2200 the CTP is likely to be near feature complete.

Microsoft yesterday invited press to a conference call at 6:30pm GMT today to talk about the Windows Vista development process. It's expected that shortly after the conference Microsoft will announce the availability of the February CTP.

Microsoft is targetting a release this year and it's widely expected to be an event that will coincide with the 5 years that have passed since Windows XP was released. Although the company has not confirmed this officially, the next CTP is expected to be released in April.

It's about time... December CTP was getting really boring.
(3 replies) #3 HoochieMamma on 22 Feb 2006 - 12:26
so how "feature complete" will it be? >60% ?
#3.1 Nexx295 on 22 Feb 2006 - 12:37
About 95%, unless they find new bugs which make a feature unusable.
#3.2 Cloud02 on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:35
So this basically means, "all" they have to do now, is optimization of everything?
#3.3 sphbecker on 22 Feb 2006 - 18:20
Sounds like this might be the build I try-out on my main system. Hope it makes next months TechNet CD set.
#4 parisp on 22 Feb 2006 - 12:37

(1 reply) #6 Stealth-X on 22 Feb 2006 - 12:44
So this is available to everyone?
#6.1 Nexx295 on 22 Feb 2006 - 12:49
Nope. Only to tech beta testers, TAP, MSDN, TechNet, etc.
(6 replies) #7 Tungsten T on 22 Feb 2006 - 12:56
Do you think this one one will be stable enough to use as a main OS?
#7.1 Jugalator on 22 Feb 2006 - 13:01
No.
#7.2 Netrack on 22 Feb 2006 - 13:44
anything MS really deems that could be close enough to be considered a main os will be an RC
#7.3 Chugworth on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:51
It could very well be. XP was stable enough to use as a main OS since around beta 2.
#7.4 Osprey on 22 Feb 2006 - 17:55
Netrack, Vista won't have RCs. Everything will be CTPs from now on, according to MS.
#7.5 Nexx295 on 22 Feb 2006 - 18:05
That isn't true. Microsoft has never confirmed that. The next CTP after February CTP might be the last CTP.
#7.6 sphbecker on 22 Feb 2006 - 18:26
I would say the OS probably is stable enough to use on a main computer, however, there are sure to be compatibility issues with hardware and software that don't support Vista yet. If you mainly do email/browsing/MS Office/ect you would probably be fine. If you are expecting a computer that will run all the latest games and hardware you should probably wait until the a few months after the final release.

Microsoft is targetting a release this year and it's widely expected to be an event that will co-inside with the 5 years that have passed since Windows XP was released.

Isn't it "coincide"?
#8.1 johndotcom83 on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:15
yes it is, and that would make the launch date October 25th if I remember right
#8.2 XP-RTM on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:31
wow i cant believe 5 years have passed already
#9 DiZZySpOOn on 22 Feb 2006 - 13:08
I use 5270 as a main OS.

Admittedly I only really surf and use msn, plus a few bits and pieces which you can get working with effort, but its fine.

I expect the next release to be even better!

Now we return you to the people slagging me off for not knowing anything about vista because if I did I wouldn't use it as a main os blah blah blah... repeat to fade.
#10 Schnitzel on 22 Feb 2006 - 13:24
Looking forward to this
#11 andy2004 on 22 Feb 2006 - 13:37
its about time they made it available to more people, fed up of not being able to test it
(2 replies) #12 powerlifter450 on 22 Feb 2006 - 13:40
I'm looking forward to reviews on this build. It's encouraging that this build is to be released today. I must say that the version coming in april will be most feature complete for nearly all purposes. Hackers are removing the time bombs activations features troubles with wga checks and are supplying seriel numbers. I'd say that by April sometime most people could be running a stable reliable complete version of Vista without the need foir such rediculousness as paying $500.00 for a version of windows Ultimate.
#12.1 eminem213486 on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:06
i know, god forbid someone pays for something which they'll use daily for the next 4-5 years...
#12.2 sphbecker on 22 Feb 2006 - 18:54
Okay, that does it! I'm making it my new personal goal to reply in this way every time someon talks about Vista costing $500. Who came up with this $500 price tag for Ultimate and why is it becoming so popular?

I still stand by my prediction that the upgrade price for Vista Ultimate will be $199. I will be surprised if it is anymore, but if it is, then it will surly still be less then $250.

Did anybody on MSDN notice that the new File Transfer Manager (FTM 5.0) will be released tomorrow (Feb. 23)? I wonder if this has ANYTHING to do with Vista CTP being dropped. I'd be hedging my bets that it will actually drop on MSDN tomorrow inline with FTM 5.0 and the Download Acceleration it affords.

#13.2 kevpan815 on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:09
That was the January FTM Release. Just Re-downloaded and got the Febuary FTM Release.
#14 prospero on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:02
i thought we weren't supposed to "expect" CTP releases since they were now based upon quality instead of time-based deadlines? has microsoft backed off?
#15 gn!uz on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:29
I just hope this Feb CTP will support hooking up a XBOX360 to it's Mediacenter... That would be totally awesome!!!
(1 reply) #16 acido00 on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:29
Hey brothers

Vista is out!
#16.1 creamhackered on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:33
No it's not out yet.
#17 joa on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:32
no it isn't
#18 martinsc on 22 Feb 2006 - 14:35
not yet available
#19 eminem213486 on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:36
i think for xbox360 to have vistas media center it would need a system upgrade on the 360 itself, it acts as a extender running a smaller version of WMC and getting file information from the computer its connected to... not really a remote desktop of the sorts...
(3 replies) #20 kevpan815 on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:48
Sorry to disapoint you guys, but the release date for Microsoft File Transfer Manager 5.0 is: Thursday, Febuary 23rd, 2006 (according to my MSDN Subscriber Download's Homepage, that is), which means that the release date for the Windows Vista Febuary CTP is also: Thursday, Febuary 23rd, 2006.
#20.1 neufuse on 22 Feb 2006 - 16:00
sorry to disappoint you but its been out for a month now!
#20.2 kevpan815 on 22 Feb 2006 - 16:11
What it means is: MSDN Subscriber's have to wait until Thursday, Febuary 23rd, 2006, to get the Windows Vista Febuary CTP.
#20.3 kevpan815 on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:11
That was the January FTM release. I just re-downloaded FTM and got the Febuary FTM release!
#21 gn!uz on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:49
That's interesting... I was wondering this too. Would it be possible to support 2 mediacenter editions. Not all XBOX360 owners with MCE will upgrade to Vista right away. I thought it does run as some sort of remote desktop session.. Just with some pieces of code on he 360 itself. It's too bad there's no info on this matter anywhere.. You had to install a xbox360 connect app on your MCE also.. I guess we'll see..
This has to be tested too I suppose
#22 TruckWEB on 22 Feb 2006 - 15:58
FTM 5.0 is available right now... No need to wait.

One as nothing to do with the other.

Wow 5 years have passed so quickly, i remember using the RC1 and RC2. i hope that the RTM release of vista is just as outstanding as XP when it 1st came out.
#25 soothsayer on 22 Feb 2006 - 16:31

Thursday, Febuary 23rd, 2006 for MSDN Subscriber's! Don't forget that us MSDN Subscriber's had to wait one extra day for the December CTP, so it will most likely get released to MSDN Subscriber's Tomorrow!

love the new sidebar and seems flip 3d has changed animation... details?
#30.1 brianshapiro on 22 Feb 2006 - 20:40
i really dont like the idea of bulky "objects/gadgets" sitting on the side of the screen. i would like something la little closer to the original sidebar designs. at least make the panels look as if they are part of the interface and modular instead of clumsy things which just sit there not even necessarily aligned with each other. a lot of it seems for a gee whiz factor, i dont know why someone wants a bulky analog clock sitting on the side of the screen, or a large frame around their RSS feed, or just a recycle bin icon sitting there. hopefully live mail (like on live.com) and live messenger gadgets can be added too, so to make it useful
