Microsoft is looking into deploying foot controls to give computer users' hands a break from typing and moving the mouse around. The technology might aid in battling repetitive stress injury.

At its annual TechFest in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft Research presented its Step User Interface. Using a sensor mat, researchers demonstrated how individuals can use the technology to perform repetitive tasks such as scrolling and to open, close, delete or flag email messages or move them to folders by tapping on six buttons on the floor. In another application they created foot controls to brows and sort a digital photo collection.

Didn't Konami invent that already with their DDR product?

I find this funny, whats funny about it people will buy it. Thinking it is going to help them. Then once enough people buys them, the media will say "do you know you can get stress injury from your feet..."

Next up, we hope to see the Stupid User Interface, designed to aliviate Repetitive Stupidity Injuries. IT departments all over the country have been clamoring for such a device for a long time.

Aren't they those large inflatable mallets that you bash the idiot users over the head with?

They should make one for my thighs and butt muscles. The tightening of my left butt cheek means scroll left.

Excellent idea, but what would an unexpected release of odorous air cause?

Typically, nausea.

Perhaps affix a warning label: "For outdoor use only". And one ought to keep the device within its original plastic wrapping to preserve its lifespan.

"try imagening a hardcore programmer writting some code, jumping all around "

Impossible to imagine... True hardcore programmers don't use MS products.

"Impossible to imagine... True hardcore programmers don't use MS products."

Real programmers use MS products.

personally i fixed my RSI issues by doing the following

getting a razer diamondback mouse for home (light as a feather)

and removing the weight from my mouse at work (dell, now much lighter)

and increasing the responsiveness of both (now nobody likes using my mice cos theyre too fast!

also learning a hell of a lot of keyboard shortcuts, buying a mac, and getting the latest software.

this looks great for people with limited motility, but could be another bad one for microsoft.

i mean, wasn't microsoft the ones who invented the Natural Keyboard, then years later publicly said it never worked.

Duh!
#6.1 shao on 01 Mar 2006 - 11:08
the natural keyboard is, according to some of our users, still great. a foot control system would be the same - it would work for a small amount of people, and not others.

still, not entirely sure how using a mac can relieve RSI.

I thought RSI was repetitive strain injury, not repetitive stress injury?

Sweeeet! my computer will have a rudder!

HUH-HUH-HUH-HUH-Warp speed Mr. Sulu.

How about using a fricken' drawing tablet, a trackball, or one of those touch-surface things? What MS is proposing is akin to using your feet for writing or eating. It's just plain GOOFY!

This whole thing reminds me of the South Park episode where Mr. Garrison invents that Segway-like machine with the, uh, *cough* "unusual" controls.

The funniest part is that they had a cartoon likeness of Bill Gates as one of the people in the audience watching the demonstration. Ouch!
