Wrong

"Microsoft has shipped a new version of its Internet Explorer browser to permanently change the way multimedia content is rendered on Web pages."

Wouldn't call it minor

Somewhere it is implied by MS that the change affects a number of plug-in providers to IE too as co-violators. Actually the change requirement is driven by the fact that MS lost a patent dispute to Eolas who got 0.5 billion awarded for patent infringement. Facts straight, IE is the violator.....all plug-in providers were using features in ActiveX that were infringing on patent unbeknownst to them. MS does not want to pay past or future, thus makes a change to ActiveX forcing many bolt on application and web-page writers to make changes.....without the update to IE/ActiveX the pages and plug-ins continue to work, so why update: To accommodate MS.....personally, I think the industry should force MS to come to a settlement with EOLAS, so that no global changes to many hundreds of thousands of pages and application (if not millions) are required.....now MS is defraying cost onto the industry.....the Industry/Internet community should protest vehemently and send the bill to Bill. Also too, i have my reservations about the business ethics of MS who holds many software patents and making money out of them.....

Sounds like more of an annoyance than anything, I think I'll pass.

MS Should've just Licensed the technology from eolas to avoid the complication.

It wasn't an eolas "technology". I believe it is the result of one of those huckster/specious pseudo-patent claims. This is MS's way of just bypassing the issue, which I agree with. Apparently, website creators can change the link slightly to return normal functionality.

After updating, it seems that when I mouseover and flash animations, (like ads for example), there is a strange border around them and you have to click it once in order to click anything on the animation...

The tooltip says "Click to activate and use this control"

ActiveX autorunning isn't the problem, it's the way ActiveX works in general that is.

Question; Does this also go thru Windows Update?
Quote this comment #11.1 Posted by sphbecker on 02 Mar 2006 - 22:36
They are on Windows Update but are flagged as Optional, so they will not install automaticly if you have Automatic Updates turned on.

also with this update it ( if you goto windows update ) it installs a new version of WGA, this so you can't disable the addon in IE to bypass the check.

I thought they fixed that a while ago somehow.
Quote this comment #12.2 Posted by Xerxes on 02 Mar 2006 - 03:40
Yeah, they fixed that ages ago ...mind you there are other ways to get around it, if you know where to look

Hmm, interesting, been a while since I last updated (last week sometime), and it appears they've already released a new WGA Validation Tool
