Small technology site TechCrunch has just posted some exclusive screenshots of the rumored 'Google Calendar' site. The calendar appears have the same general layout as Gmail, and again looks to be making heavy use of AJAX, which allows users to view and update content without reloading large portions of the website.

The Calendar beta is codenamed 'CL2' and is rumored to be in the hands of only around 200 people. TechCrunch has been overwhelmed by the traffic load, but not before ZDNet and a few other mainstream web media outlets grabbed said screenshots and dissected their content. Rumored features include SMS notification, subscription feeds, and the ability to share events even with people not signed up for the calendar service. CL2's product description reads:

"CL2 makes it easy — even effortless — to keep track of all the events in your life and compare them to what your friends and family have going on in theirs. We’ve designed a calendar that works for you — helping you add events from email, friends, and other public calendars — so you don’t have to spend all your time maintaining your schedule. CL2 even helps you discover new events you might be interested in. We think it’s a great tool for managing your daily schedule, keeping track of what everyone in your family is doing, organizing events for a club or team, or creating public events that you can promote to the world."

This leak comes just days after Google let some 'GDrive' details slip on an internal PowerPoint presentation that made its way onto the web.

Yes! I've recently been researching offline/online calendar solutions, and was very surprised to discover that there weren't any really good free online calendars that supported iCal exporting/importing (best I could find was ifreebusy.com). Looks like Google's going to fill that void .

Rainlendar is able to...
#2.2 IGx89 on 08 Mar 2006 - 21:54
It's not an online calendar service...

I do want a nice desktop "widget" to display upcoming events from Outlook, but both Rainlendar and Day Planner don't show events in the style I'd like. I found an OSX widget that does, but that's obviously out of the question...

you could host the rainlender server, so that's an option for an online calendar.

Interesting how people rush to something created by google, however useless

Am I the only one getting sick of Google and their rediculously pointless projects? Great! They've created a calendar! So has every other online service under the sun. Big flippin deal.

it's like googletalk...utterly useless

Well I already use GMail fairly heavily and I use Rainlendar seperately but obviously would love to have all my appointments / dates on the net in one place. I'm very excited by the prospect of calendaring.. bring it on Google.. one eager user here!

Ive seen something exactly like this...not from google, where you just type meeting with don thursday 1pm and it fills in automatically....something called 30boxes or something(30days in a month) something with boxes in its name

I use that, and it's good but not perfect, it's not all that smart on date recognition and uses the American date system.

If I can move my events to google i will use that definately.

I for one think it will be cool -- At work we use an Exchange server and I use outlook 2003 for all my work email, work calendering, etc.

For personal use/freelance work I use gmail and have all my email accounts through my websites added to gmail. the addition of a google calendar will make managing all my personal events easy and SEPERATE from my work accounts.

not everyone is set up like i am but there are lots of people that will get use out of a gcal.

Why would you want to compare your events with friends? im pretty sure they dont wanna know when i need to restock on eggs or when i need to pay my internet bill.

maybe they actually mean "us" :p

I'm guessing they'll separate events from tasks. Comparing events is very useful when trying to find the best time to organize an event with friends, so you don't have to be continually going back and forth finding out what times people are available.

would be nice if they integrate that with gmail...
#10 frogworm on 08 Mar 2006 - 20:45
so where can i get it already?

I think Microsoft has a calender that intergrates with hotmail and MSN messenger.
For those who were searching for free online calenders

Yeah, Hotmail has calendar... and so does Windows Live Mail but only if you use IE. But it also isn't AJAX.

What the hell...of course Windows Live Mail uses AJAX style systems. Thats the whole damn point. Hotmail uses it to, just not as noticibly.

Google's doing it again. Looks like the Gmail interface. Simple and plain.
#15 Scorcho on 09 Mar 2006 - 13:44
if this is integrated with gmail just like gtalk, i can see this being absolutely great.
#16 Dakkaroth on 09 Mar 2006 - 16:01
I was just messing around with the website looking for anything related to the calendar.

AJAX is ruling these days.
