Advertisement (Why?)
Microsoft has just posted the Beta 1 refresh of Office 2007 to their servers. This refresh build allows testers to use Office 2007 on the Feburary Vista CTP release and features additional UI and stability improvements.

"Thank you for participating in the 2007 Microsoft Office Technical Beta program. The 2007 Microsoft Office Beta-1 Technical Refresh software is now available for you to download on BetaPlace (http://beta.microsoft.com). As previously mentioned, we have two goals for this release:

  1. We want you to be able to validate that the fixes to issues you've previously reported about 2007 Microsoft Office do meet your organization's needs.

  2. We also want to provide a build of 2007 Microsoft Office that functions on Windows Vista Feb CTP. With this build, we will begin accepting bug and newsgroup submissions regarding the 2007 Microsoft Office Beta1TR build on Windows Vista Feb. CTP."

The new builds can be downloaded by testers over at beta.microsoft.com

test = pirate
#2.2 Shadrack on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:58
Thank you raskren. Your keen sense of computer culture and ability to read between the lines has really set you apart from the rest of us.

Many people here actually are beta testers for Microsoft.
#2.3 mlou5ca on 16 Mar 2006 - 04:04

Third post.

MS Beta site is swamped.
#3.1 mikeyj on 14 Mar 2006 - 17:41
Ur absolutely right, I can't get to the page at all.
#4 Roger2 on 13 Mar 2006 - 23:53
Downloading it now at an amazing 22KB/s!
(2 replies) #5 Intelman on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:03
beta.microsoft.com doesn't even load for me
#5.1 Mr. Mister on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:04
isn't working for me either, guess I'll try later or tomorrow
#5.2 someotherguy582 on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:09
Give it time, I had to refresh lots of times just to load one page.
#6 SHoTTa35 on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:11
haha, well sorry to the guys who gotta wait till later. i've been raping away for a while now so i'm almost done. I'm getting the regular Office beta and Sharepoint Designer 2007. it's going but bounces up and down. sometimes it goes to 90 for a minute then comes back down to 50 or so, now bouncing between 44 and 35.
#7 Sn00pY on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:19
Heh betaplace is SLOWWWWWW

come on MS get a decent backbone!
#8 Boxster17 on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:22
I grabbed it right when I got the e-mail almost 2 hours ago and it's slowed down considerably now. It's down to about 40kbs. Can't wait to see if they actually fixed everything that was causing problems for me, as it's a pain having to keep Office 2003 on here as well.
#9 greenlemon on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:24
I'm looking forward to downloading this one. I reported a bug that happened to me, but I never heard an answer back on it. Does it still report the wrong number of emails on the welcome screen when using Outlook?
(1 reply) #10 foxconn287 on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:35
Downloading at 0kb/sec woot 90% left
#10.1 SHoTTa35 on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:39
yeah, wtf, i was going on fine and dandy at 40KB/s then it said download interupted so i thought my wifi died but that's not the case as i can still connect to neowin and i checked my server (via remote desktop so network is working fine) and it's still downloading (some other files from non-MS servers) But damn. now i'm at 80% and it's trying to connect, 82.8MB left and it's not doing a thing.

To all the other guys refreshing the MS server site so they can get on the beta could ya chill for another 1hr so those of us that's almost done can finish and you can get on? Pretty please? LOL
#11 frogworm on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:48
and i'm taking an office class in school and they didn't take my request to get in the beta
#12 troist on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:51
this is good news ^_^ but its downloading at 1.6KB/s here feels like i'm on dial-up
(2 replies) #13 dark kyuubi on 14 Mar 2006 - 00:52

#13.1 kaffra on 14 Mar 2006 - 01:07

#13.2 Hurmoth on 14 Mar 2006 - 01:10

#14 CUBBYJR1 on 14 Mar 2006 - 01:04

(2 replies) #15 neufuse on 14 Mar 2006 - 01:14
aint this nice... I posted this in BPN... way before anyone else... my posts got deleted and get no credit for posting it before anyone even knew about it... makes me feel all warm and fuzzy...
#15.1 kaffra on 14 Mar 2006 - 01:26
i posted earlier than you, just sharing info so i dont care who gets the credit.

Neufuse, your post wasn't deleted - it was merged with the same topic that was created by Kaffra 15 minutes before you.

I can get on but my question is if we did not get in this beta will there be another chance before it hits the market or vista another build or both?
#18 yudi_lks on 14 Mar 2006 - 01:55

oh come on its just beta... pirating this could only HELP the development of it
#22 Audhumla on 14 Mar 2006 - 05:07
Forget the NDA, post some screens! :p
(1 reply) #23 ev0| on 14 Mar 2006 - 05:22
It's a lot faster, the UI is actually better than I thought it was going to be although they removed the animations, which is a bit of a shame, but there are alot more icons and features in place in this build and it's feeling pretty much like a beta 2. There are only 2 color schemes to choose, luna or obsidian (black) and you can guess which one I prefer, but still, at least there is a choice. I wish there was a glass-ized version that works on Vista though that would be kickass (ala media player 11)
#23.1 jedimasterk on 14 Mar 2006 - 06:56
The edges need to be anti-aliased a bit. I prefer the original beta user interface. It looks to much like Netscape 8.
(1 reply) #24 jedimasterk on 14 Mar 2006 - 06:02
Netscape anyone!!. What an ugly user interface!!
#24.1 DigeratiPrime on 14 Mar 2006 - 14:15
i agree, when i first saw the screens my first thought was netscape :bleh:
#25 Sirius_Black on 14 Mar 2006 - 06:39
I am getting awfully low speeds right now...(Beta Place didn't even load for me earlier today! Will try later, perhaps tomorrow
#26 [DGS] on 14 Mar 2006 - 08:22

(1 reply) #27 CUBBYJR1 on 14 Mar 2006 - 09:02

#27.1 wilbert on 14 Mar 2006 - 16:29
Yes, kind of... When BETA 2 is officialy released for both products the public will be able to test BETA 2.
(1 reply) #28 chrzz on 14 Mar 2006 - 10:22
*Aaah...* Lovely new GUI. Just installed it.
#28.1 trip21 on 15 Mar 2006 - 08:01
I think so to, I would have rather they cleaned up the pre release interface rather than change it but it's still cool in black. The team involved should have a talk to the IE and Vista teams during lunch, now thos are UGLY / MESSY interfaces

wont load!!
#32 TruckWEB on 14 Mar 2006 - 12:46
This Beta is not on MSDN....

I don't understand this. As a paying MSDN user, we should be getting all beta software.
#33 Cloud02 on 14 Mar 2006 - 12:48
When will there be a MSDN release of Office?
#34 Stalk3r on 14 Mar 2006 - 13:01
Looks damn ugly imo, all this shininess etc.
#35 cool_guy6_06 on 14 Mar 2006 - 14:08
Does anyone know another place we can download this?
#36 DJ Woody on 14 Mar 2006 - 14:44
im getting sick to death of the slow MS servers, specially when new betas are released.
anyways either way its on Bit Torrent so for us legit testers we can get it from there now
#37 reactionary007 on 14 Mar 2006 - 15:19
I hope that they release this to MSDN subscribers. Anyone here anything on this?
#38 Matteh on 14 Mar 2006 - 16:21
does this mean no more acrobat?
#39 eye_see_you on 14 Mar 2006 - 16:31
man the site had been hammered .. sorry MSDN subscribers this is not goign to be released anytime soon according to the Microsoft RDP event I attended. I'm still trying to download the refresh
#40 bush on 14 Mar 2006 - 16:47
is this the same, that looked "ugly"?
#41 tom5 on 14 Mar 2006 - 17:43
Where's Neowin's Cebit coverage?
#42 obsolete_power on 14 Mar 2006 - 18:33
What's wrong with it? It looks pretty good, I'd use it...You know people, the world advances and things get better and better, if you must be satisfied with old and outdated things then you do that. I always like to have the newest and best things so I cannot be bothered with these accusations especially when not many people have used it yet. If you prefer the classic look then stick with office xp or office 2000. I have the Beta 1 and it is pretty functional, more clean looking and hopefully in the end it will be more productive. As of now they have done a pretty good job with it so the ones that are complaining, just wait and try it out first before you make a decision.
(3 replies) #43 TruckWEB on 14 Mar 2006 - 18:39
MSDN is realy a joke. Oh yeah, you get everything that is RELEASED, but less and less things that are in Beta.

And getting Beta software for testing was the reason why we got MSDN in the first place.

#43.1 jwjw1 on 14 Mar 2006 - 23:51
if that kind of money was paid for a subscription to MSDN to just test beta software...someone needs to have their head examined.
#43.2 TruckWEB on 15 Mar 2006 - 00:50
NOT ONLY for that, but Microsoft said that MSDN Universal included ALL Beta software. And it's becoming less and less true.

I don't have any problem with my head, thanks for asking.
#43.3 Trevahaha on 15 Mar 2006 - 18:28
I agree.. it sucks that I have MSDN Universal/Team Suite and can't get a beta of Office through it. They really need to fix that... maybe even disable feedback if it's just for the sake of too much feedback.
#44 McG on 14 Mar 2006 - 19:44
Anyone know if a review has been posted anywhere?
#45 ThunderRiver on 14 Mar 2006 - 20:23
The whole BetaPlace server is down.

(2 replies) #50 scandal on 15 Mar 2006 - 04:19
what desperate guys here....

OPEN OFFICE!!! Is f*******ing FREE and GOOD! You can donate if you want, but no need to pay for it, doh...
#50.1 bush on 15 Mar 2006 - 06:52
for me it's just free.
#50.2 XerXis on 15 Mar 2006 - 09:34
open office doesn't have the functionality that ms office has, certainly not for companies. it just isn't good enough. If you want an alternative for ms office you can better go with wordperfect, it's not as costly and pretty good, altough i prefer ms office
#51 ThunderRiver on 15 Mar 2006 - 04:45
Well, after 3 hours.. it is stuck at 99%! Only 1 sec left, but it is stuck at 423.9 MB, with 0.5 MB left..

Scandal, and your point is? We just want to beta test.. and if you don't want to contribute, you can step aside.

wel it seems for the time being... getting the build thru BT is a lot more faster and "reliable" compared to MS Beta site..
#54 windows95isg8 on 15 Mar 2006 - 08:02
Just woke up to find the download is done
The MS sever speeded up for me last night, so people should try using it again, as the links that are up on bit torrent sites could be copies that have been change, or may not be as upto date. If you really wana beta test, make sure you have the real software to test.

Im glad to see the MS downloads are in ISO form, it saves time. I just used a virtual drive, open the iso file and installed. I will burn the ISO to a DVD a bit later though. So I got a copy on disk.
(1 reply) #55 hardgiant on 15 Mar 2006 - 08:57
Wow this is really buggy.
#55.1 Audhumla on 16 Mar 2006 - 04:40
It IS a beta...
#56 nxm on 15 Mar 2006 - 16:22
its also on tpb for everbody to snag.

but i agree, lets better support some real alternatives like openoffice to make it possible to enhance their stuff. they also can need some donations, some knowledgable coders, or artists, people with good ideas, interface and usability design capabilities and so forth.

opensource is the future for everybody.

not reducing opensource to just a cost-factor or nor just meaning "things for free".

#57 rukshankb on 15 Mar 2006 - 17:35
May be it is better than previous editions............

**DO NOT REPLY - THIS E-MAIL IS BEING SENT TO YOU FROM AN UNMONITORED ACCOUNT.**

Hello, We have received numerous reports of users with difficulty accessing <http://beta.microsoft.com/> and downloading files since we released 2007 Microsoft Office Beta 1 TR on Monday. Even with the additional BetaPlace servers added since the Beta 1 release, BetaPlace is experiencing problems meeting the demand caused by the extremely large number users hitting the site at the same time. It was hoped this issue would resolve itself over time, but it has not.

As a result, our IT operations group is currently in the process of adding additional servers to handle the load. The current ETA for this to be completed is within the next 4-6 hours. While there are many teams in the IT operations group working on the problem, and many interdependencies within the BetaPlace infrastructure, we are hopeful they will be able to get this resolved in that timeframe.

We appreciate your patience as we work to correct the issue.

Thank you,
Office Customer/Partner Programs Team
