According to bink.nu who cites an unknown Microsoft Employee from the Windows Vista Newsgroups, a new build of Windows Vista is due today.

Paul Thurrott has confirmed the build as 5342 and release date over on his FAQ for Vista pages.

The new build is expected to be released to testers on connect later today and MSDN subscribers.

Windows Vista suffered its latest delay this week as Microsoft announced Vista will not be available for OEM's and Retail outlets until January 2007. This huge set back and re-organisation of the Windows Client Division will cause significant issues for OEM's and Businesses.

Even though Windows Vista Business Editions are due to be available in November 2006 many corporations outsource their PCs to suppliers like Fujitsu Siemens, IBM or Dell which preload Windows Versions onto their machines. For the corporations that image base deploy internally this shouldn't be a big set back but it will be interesting to see what the Christmas sales figures are for new PCs this year.

Anything new expected in this build or is it just bugfixes and minor changes?
#2.1 Jason on 24 Mar 2006 - 09:52
There is nothing new as its feature complete as stated by Microsoft so its just bug fixes and fit and finish from now on.
#2.2 divertom15 on 24 Mar 2006 - 10:29
Sorry Jason a lot is comming that we dont have yet
To name a few:
*Pixel shader / Vector based glass (Aero Glass) DX9 only
*PNG glass (Aero express) dx8 based cards now get glass. (what is now currently dx9 cards only/all previous builds)
*Preview pane aurora (also strangely called the vista flare 0_o)
*Desktop Aurora
*More "ported" screensavers (flying thru space, scrolling marquee, etc.)
*More gadgets (im guessing at least a wmp gadget)
*Texas Hold 'em (via WGA / Windows Ultimate extras) [not avalible untill rtm]
Rumored:
*More project M stuff (max was only part of project m not the entirety of what they are working on)
*The Diamond teir (above Aero glass)

More if i can think of them later

Biggest thing i would like to make clear to everyone is that the public has not gotten a build with Aero Glass in it. All we have had thus far is Aero Express.

i should mention that the glass bits wont be in place untill beta 2 (which will be released at winhec)

I appreciate new UI bits to come but I'd appreciate as well that MS revisits every single Windows 95 era window to fix it once and for all. Making the damn thing faster would help as well.
And what about making all new Vista applications consistent with each other ? Does that sound impossible ??

"Biggest thing i would like to make clear to everyone is that the public has not gotten a build with Aero Glass in it. All we have had thus far is Aero Express."

Yes, Aero Glass is already released, just not really using vector graphics.

They're even calling the transparent effect "glass":
http://www.winsupersite.com/images/showcas...sta5270_082.jpg

... and compared to Aero Express, which one can see when e.g. running in VMware or DWM-unsupported cards:
http://www.nukeation.net/content/binary/v03.jpg (the "Form1" window in the designer there)

That tier is also called Express in Vista itself, as one can see in the Display Properties.

There's also a more basic version of Aero that Vista Home Basic will use that doesn't equal Express. It looks kind of like an opaque version of Aero Glass.

Aero Diamond was supposed to be the MCE UI, but I'm not sure if it's scrapped by now. You won't see it alongside the other skins in the actual desktop OS versions though, and that it was "above" other styles is basically '04 rumors.

Finally Vista's "Classic" tier is obviously the Windows 2000 look & feel.

Ooooooo good news divertom15, that sounds piffy for the release. Hope they don't cut any of it.
#2.8 Yogurth on 24 Mar 2006 - 14:34
So this is what Vista has turned into? 3d interface...kiss goodbye anything useful. I'm shocked with MS poor direction with this OS. Do they really believe that pixel shader will sell Vista? Or is anyone actually getting this cause of transparent borders?

I hoope that 60% rewrite rumours are true, for now it's an appaling Windows upgrade.
#2.9 balupton on 24 Mar 2006 - 15:25
Yogurth go home.
What makes you think that when windows gets a new look people assume thats its the only new feature and improvement.
If you have actually been researching and/or testing it then you would be able to take that stick out your ass.

And back the the original post, i doubt thats all the things thats in the new release, have you listened to the conversation with Allchin?
He said allong the lines 'if you look at the current build of vista, you would not believe we did all this in a month, it is a substantial improvement of the current ctp'.
#2.10 Yogurth on 25 Mar 2006 - 08:12
Please refrain Yourself from insults, balupto and yes unlike You I did tested 5308 for a week...it was the worst ever beta OS I have ever tested, and I tested quite alot.

Here is how wonderful and fast Vista is currently:

1 . My computer: p4 northwood 3.0ghz, 768 mb DDR RAM, ATi 9600xt with 128 mb DDR RAM, 2x40gb maxtor@7200 rpm
2. Slow: each click in Vista comes with a performace delay of 3-5 seconds, and then the actual app starts to load, each click made my hard drive swap, opening My Pictures or any other folder/app(picture viewer) with pictures took almost 10 sec, WMP 11 took over 10 sec to open up without any library or file loaded....and so on
3. Hog: after booting without anything running my memory usage was: main memory ~300 mb, pagefile.sys ~600 mb, processor was always awake diminishing MS claims that graphics chip will take over GUI rendering...and I wasn't running it at full Aero capabilities
4. Unstable: explorer.exe was crashing every ~5 minutes depending on what was I doing, when it crashes it starts checking error(this can take several minutes and i believe it is a part of MS debug)....
5. Unoptimized: atleast dozen of useless services for average user running around and Vista has about 40 by default turned on...
6. Ugly (this is personal opinion and You don't need to take it seriously)
.
.
I could go on, but I believe this is sufficient.

If You dont believe me, maybe Microsoft employees will sound more convincing:

@ Yogurth: Wow, a slow, unstable, unoptimized beta? I never would have guessed!

#4.1 Chimera on 24 Mar 2006 - 12:56
I say 3pm EST and there has been a 64bit version of the other builds so I would expect one here too.

can't wait to get this one
#5.1 lbmouse on 24 Mar 2006 - 15:49
I think I can wait. It appears that around 60% of Vista is going to have to be re-written in any case. Hopefully the delay is more than just a marketing stunt and will afford them the time fix all the problems and remove that nasty embedded DRM.
#5.2 PCyr on 24 Mar 2006 - 20:12
Good job lbmouse, the first article is from the Inquirer, known for its FUD, the second article doesn't mention a source, and the third article is about a single problem.

Try getting more reliable support before trolling again k?

Damn I will be out lol oh well I will get it later.
(2 replies) #9 Treefrog on 24 Mar 2006 - 16:49
This is all well and good for you guys, but guess what?

Sixty percent of Vista's code is going to be rewritten.
#9.1 balupton on 24 Mar 2006 - 17:48
Yer but later in that article the only reason they suggest is 'Media Center Functionality' i mean wtf, 60% of the code is media center stuff......
Then the article just talks about the change in the division... so yer its strange....

nothing yet for MSDN, at least that I can find...
#17.1 Aaron44126 on 25 Mar 2006 - 23:16
I think I read that this release will only be posted on Connect. Since it's not a CTP, it won't be posted on MSDN or Technet.
