If you're a U.S. Resident, you are now free to signup and give Office Live a shot. The Office Live Team has temporarily removed the waitlist for U.S. Residents. Here's what Matt Rolak says on the Office Live Blog:

Quote -
We have dropped the requirement of a product key from our signup! The Beta is still only open to US residents for now, but ANY US resident with a valid credit card can sign up for the Beta and experience Office Live! All you need to do now is pick your product (Basics, Collaboration or Essentials) and pick your domain. So head over to www.OfficeLive.com now to get your Beta subscription started.

So go and give Office Live a shot! Matt does say that if there are a lot of signups that exceed their expectations, they may have to reinstate the waitlist - so don't hesitate if you're interested in testing Office Live!

Why do they need users to have a valid US credit card??

I guess for some sort of verification process, but which kind, and still... why?

Is it public or not?

To verify your details

If i recall correctly they withdraw or deposit a measly amount of a few cents, just enough to verify that the account exists so you arent link farming and at some point you get the money back. I think thats what I heard.

Discrimination for the EU people!!!!!!!

WRONG MOVE MS!! We begin to hate you more!
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by Jugalator on 06 Apr 2006 - 11:43
No, "we" don't because of that. Speak for yourself. :p
Quote this comment #4.2 Posted by scandal on 06 Apr 2006 - 11:46
Edit and try this: "No, "we" don't ONLY for that"!
Quote this comment #4.3 Posted by Jugalator on 06 Apr 2006 - 16:11
Regardless the exact formulation, what I mean is that I think "we" don't hate MS more due to this "discrimination" like you said in the original post.

Perhaps it's just a minority which you happen to be part of. I'm just saying you should use the "we" a bit more carefully when all you're voicing is YOUR opinion. Depending on what exactly you say, you may just end up giving Europeans a false label, in this case feeling very strongly about this decision, which I most certainly don't.

HOW CAN THEY GIVE AWAY DOMAINS FOR FREE.

Q: Why is Microsoft Office Live Basics free?
A: Office Live Basics is offered at no charge through an advertising-supported model. Microsoft is allowing a select number of advertisers to place small, unobtrusive ads on a handful of member pages. Please know that our advertisers' content will not appear on the Web site you create for your own company.

funny:

"You are not using a recent version of Internet Explorer and need to download it in order to use Office Live.

* Download Now"

an i have FireFox latest version. Now here is discrimination!

I'm not so sure about this whole live thing. I have to pay MS to protect my windows install because of their inability to code properly
Quote this comment #6.2 Posted by MasterSpy on 06 Apr 2006 - 14:20
Don't use Windows if you don't like it then. Nobody is forcing you to pay for it.
Quote this comment #6.3 Posted by Jugalator on 06 Apr 2006 - 16:27
^^ But that still doesn't mean one can complain about things you dislike. If you can't, you just conveniently kill discussions. No, Microsoft isn't forcing you to pay for it, and it's optional, but depending on one's situation and what one does with the computer, one may still need to use it, and then the opinion should be given since this is a discussion board.

I'm so tired of these "don't use if you don't like" comments that keeps being thrown around by anyone who don't want to discuss the matter and just dismiss the arguments. Obviously, one would pick something else and better if it was possible and a better overall solution.

Is there free webspace too?
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #8 Posted by Ironman2003 on 06 Apr 2006 - 15:45
They sign you up for free web space, hosting and then base it similar to the other services which offer limited hosting. It brands your site with a "Powered by Microsoft Office Live" (or similar) at the bottom of each page.

I am sticking with my own hosting for now.

woot! Another free domain name...
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #11 Posted by Ironman2003 on 06 Apr 2006 - 16:52
Hmmm..Perhaps it was the powered logo only during the temporary set up. My error then.

I will tell you though, if you want to cancel your subscription, it is like going through hoops. Call 1-866-663-2273 (per one care live's support site) then be told that you have to call 1-866-591-5483 (per that number) and then be told to email them to request cancellation.

Is Office Live the same thing as Office 2007?
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by SHoTTa35 on 08 Apr 2006 - 22:30
No it's not... office live is a service. Office 2007 is a set of applications. Read up on Office Live and Office 2007 on microsoft.com and officelive.com to see the difference.

See the thing that I dont like is they want you CC to charge you after the beta is over (I mean that could be a year from now). So I am going to pass on this.
Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by j0j081 on 09 Apr 2006 - 07:47
they won't charge it if you picked the free one.
