Disney will soon offer shows like Lost and Desperate Housewives for free online, the AP reports.

The shows will be available the morning after they air, and will be hosted in a format allowing users to go back and watch an entire series through. Disney claim to be using clever technology to stop users fast forwarding through commercials, which fund the content. Disney did not say whether users would be able to save content to disk for watching later.

Lost, like many other shows, is currently available for purchase and download on the iTunes Music store. However, this move marks what is probably the conclusion the studios would have reached in a year or so time, had online piracy not been so high.

Not locked into long term deals, video providers have been able to hop between services to test out different models- note CBS and Google Video. Users are un-happy paying effectively three times over for online content - their TV bills, watching adverts on live TV, and then paying iTunes to download it. Content producers like Disney are worried about the rise in 'television' piracy, and don't want to see their business heading down the slope the music industry saw in 2003 (and still sees). The move is a sensible start, and to be commended; we just need to wait and see how long it takes other companies to get on board. $30 for a DVD and download copy with serious DRM indicates they still don't get the point.

Best move Ever. Many Pirates themselves have stated that If the format was available for free through legal means, even with commercials, then they would stop pirating. This is a good Step in the right direction.

Episodes would be in a 16x9 video format. Additionally, the videos would be encoded in Flash 8 which would make them viewable on both Mac and PC platforms. The standard viewing size would be 500x282 pixels, however a higher bandwidth version would be available at 700x394 pixels.

sounds like they are going to be using WMV. might be country locked like the bbc content
#8.1 quanta on 10 Apr 2006 - 19:18
Almost definitely. They mention being unable to fast-forward thru commercials; WMV and ASF allows content providers to disable the rewind/fast fwd. If true though, it unfortunately means no Linux playback.

According to this ABC (Disney) press release: http://abcmedianet.com/pressrel/dispDNR.html?id=041006_04
Encoded and streamed in Flash 8, which offers the best video quality and allows users on both Mac and PC platforms to watch the video episode, will be offered in two different sizes. The standard viewing size is 500x282 pixels (streamed at 400kbs), and the larger viewing size is 700x394 pixels (streamed 700 kbps).
meaning that it should be playable cross-platform.

I normally hate disney, but for once they are doing something incredibly right!

Finally companies are discovering what can be acheived when they embrace change in their industry. People want TV shows on-demand over the internet, and don't want to pay for incredibly poor quality files on iTunes.

My only concern is that this is probably going to be limited to the US, and they won't bother launching the same service with ads for other areas.

The best thing about this for Disney is that they can target the downloaded episodes at a more specific demographic, so expect more computer/internet related ads on the downloaded versions

Guess Ill be the first to say it:

I thought for a second that Disney went porno: Lost and Desperate Housewives

Considering CBS has been doing everything they can to screw with DVR owners. Specificly over the last few months of watching Lost on HD, they first had sound incompatibility problems and once they finally cleared that up, they've started offsetting their shows more and more. Like this wensday, if I hadn't been home, I wouldn't have seen _any_ of Lost. I had Top Chef and South Park set to record at the 9 o'clock CST block, but since Lost goes until like 9:05 or whatever, it decided that it would cancel Lost since it can't record three shows at once. I came home half-way through Lost and was incredibly peeved.

If I have to choose between other stations that start/stop their shows on-time and the crap CBS plays, I'll just give up on my weekly cliffhanger of the week.

But now, I'd be able to just watch it the next day regardless of CBS's crap-o-the-month.

A brilliant move. I don't mind ads either, gives you time to go get something to eat or whatever.

This is awesome. I can't wait for it to start. Especially if I can watch the whole series Lost from the beginning, that I just can't get into cause I never saw it from the beginning.

this is cool, but what does it mean for companies selling the episodes like Apple?
#16 ThePitt on 11 Apr 2006 - 15:14

hm.... I would have thought the "locking to US only" would kinda defeat the purpose of cutting down piracy... One would think that shows like 24, Desperate Housewives, Lost, and othe rpopular shows, would get more downloads outside the US, because we dont get the shows for at least another month of so later... thereby not really scratching the piracy issue at all.
