PC maker Fujitsu said Tuesday it will become the first company to release desktop computers compatible with the next-generation Blu-ray optical discs. The desktops with Blu-ray drives are expected to come out in Japan in June. Fujitsu's announcement comes one day after Toshiba unveiled a plan to launch in mid-May notebook computers that can handle HD DVD discs, which compete with Blu-ray in the market for high-definition optical discs. Fujitsu also plans to launch notebooks with HD DVD drives in June, catering to both camps.

Is that vice-versa as well? i.e. Desktops with HD DVD and notebooks with BD?

Interesting to see a price, looking at the high point of BD-R

A 25GB recordable disc costs $19.95, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the trade group behind the next-generation format. Recordable-rewritable versions of the 25GB disc cost $24.95. Later this year, TDK will come out with a Blu-ray disc that records on both sides and holds 50GB. The recordable version will sell for $47.99, while the recordable-rewritable version will go for $59.95. TDK began to supply manufacturers with samples in December.

Got that from OSNN.Net

That's worse than when dual-layer dvds came to market. IMO, not worth it for a long while.

im just sick and tired of that camp crap, they better develop things together, which means more satisfied costumers becoz of a mono-standard-situation and better quality

for less than half that, you can buy a decent package on some hosting companies...lol I googled and look: http://www.deepbluehosting.com/hosting.php 50GB = $22.95 a month

You can get a 80gb harddrive for $50 cnd . Or a 300gig for $130 cnd. That is way too much for one blu-ray disc. Sorry but I will not adopt this tech until I can buy each disc for less that a buck or two.

Looks like you won't be adopting it ever then.

What kind of remark is that? Are you honestly trying to say that Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs will never be less than a dollar each? Give me a break.

No, Blue-ray or HD disc will not be less then a dollar for AT LEAST 6 years, and only then when something is out that replaces both and made them worthless..

Your ability to predict the future is amazing. How long have you had this power?

HD-DVD discs cost the amd as a DVD to produce though. so
Quote this comment #7.3 Posted by TRC on 12 Apr 2006 - 09:53
Not necessarily, they use competely different materials and I'm sure require different equipment to produce. Until productivity really gets going and there are many more manufacturers making them the price is going to be higher than it is to produce a normal DVD-R.

they'll be more expensive yes, but they won't be anywhere near the price of BD.

Actually I was confused, for some reason I thought you were talking about Blu-Ray. That's what I get for posting after staying up all night.

I believe Toshiba has already done this with their Qosmio line, which is by the way amazing considering what it is made for.

While more fast will show a bd-r, more fast the price will go down.
