On Wednesday, AMD announced their first quarter earnings,
reporting a 70 percent surge. Revenue for the first quarter was $1.33 billion, up from
$780 million in the same quarter last year.
AMD’s performance was led by strong sales of its Athlon 64 and Opteron processors. Intel, in March, warned that its first-quarter revenue would be lower than expected based on a slow market and some loss of market share to AMD.
Despite AMD’s recent gain in market share, AMD is only expected to introduce one major technology this year; DDR2 will be released with the new AM2 socket, which is not expected to give a huge boost to performance.
In June, AMD will hold a financial analyst meeting where it will disclose future road map plans beyond the end of 2006.
